Hi everyone,
For about a week and a half now, I have been getting this strange feeling in my throat. It's a full feeling with also a feeling of something stuck in the base of my throat. It's the best way I can describe it. I went to the ER last week, because I woke up with this feeling that I couldn't breathe, sat straight up in bed, scared the heck out of me. I went to the ER and the dr took x-rays of my throat and neck but didn't see anything, said everything was fine, except for a slight "steeple sign" on my throat, which led him to believe it was allergies. It is such a strange feeling and really scares me sometimes. I tried Zyrtec and some nights it worked, some times it didn't. Now I am trying Zyrtec-D and hoping that it won't flare my IC. Only thing is I can't take it at night because the D keeps me awake. I just really want to have a good night's sleep. Has this happened to anyone else and if so, what do you do to make it better?
I've been drinking a lot of peppermint tea with honey, which helps temporarily, but during the night it comes on with a vengeance. I would love to hear any and all suggestions on this.
Thank you everyone.

It does sound like an allergic reaction. What does your doctor say?

You didn't discribe this feeling but I felt like I had a lump in my throat, docs could see nothing, It turned out to be from acid reflux or GERD.

Yeah i am with mothergoose...i have severe acid reflux and i have sore throats all the time, and also have to clear my throat A LOT....
and i also feel like theres a lump in my throat a lot too....
so it could be something linked to that....
ya never know...
try some antacids or some gas-X too.....i know gas-X is good for intestinal gas.
but i have found it helps me burp too....so it can help things too...
just thought to put my two cents in...
i hope you figure it out and resolve it soon
take care

A few years ago I kept feeling like I had something in my throat. I thought it was sinus drainage and did nothing about it. It turns out it was nodules on my thyroid which was removed in 1994.

I have has this feeling where it feels almost like my throat is swollen in that spot. I also went to a couple ENT doctors and they looked down there with a scope and did not see anything. It could be just a nerve making you feel like there is a lump there, at least that is what I was told. Also some mentioned acid reflux, this is a possibility, but usually you will have other symptoms with that( heartburn, burning feeling from acid in the throat, coughing, etc..). I will get this feeling and it comes and goes. I hope you feel better soon.

When I was younger, I used to feel like my throat was closing up. I had two barium swallows and was diagnosed with esophogeal spasms-coming from tension. I remember having it so bad when my kids were little, and I had an alcoholic drink, and it disappeared. I am in a flare of bladder and urethral spasms right now, and every so often I feel that old tightening in my throat. Krisssy

Annie,
that sounds like a result of acid reflux or esophageal spasms(both of which I've had). After many x-rays, upper Gi's it turned out to be acid reflux(never experienced heart burn for that matter). I had the feeling that a lump was in my throat. According to my gastro doc acid was burning my esophagus causing it to shrink in size and spasm. I actually did get food stuck for 2 days. Also for some reason allergies do have something to do with it. The treatment is to take prilosec or prevacid(antacid) until the esophagus heals. I ended up getting my esophagus stretched twice(felt so much better afterwards)
Good Luck!

Hi everyone,
Thanks for all the responses. I do have GERD, which I already take omeprazole for. I've been taking Zyrtec since my trip to the ER and it seems to be taking care of the problem, so I'm chalking it up to allergies. I really appreciate everyone's help on this matter. Thanks again.
I hope everyone is doing well. Take care.

Hi Annie,
I hope that awful lump in your throat feeling is better! I also have allergies really bad! As if having IC isn't bad enough, we have allergies, GERDS and whatever else there is out there. I hope you feel much better!

Thanks Teela.
I'm taking Mucinex now, as it still felt that there was phlegm in my throat right in the base. I'm taking that along with the allergy med, Zyrtec. It's getting better.

Hi! I just found this post and wanted to reply because I had this problem for a whole year. I am glad that you are feeling better but in my case it was my thyroid. It was a choking sensation that would not go away. I had problems swallowing and was told that I had GERD also. But as it turns out it was an underactive thyroid. I had every symptom of a thyroid problem but was told it was everything but. They were wrong! Now my IBS is gone,no more GERD, no more problems swallowing,no more fevers, anxiety, Fibro symptoms! All because of the Synthroid(thyroid med). Even the IC is alot better although unrelated but who knows! When a symptom appears that you have never had before check it out and trust your own instincts. I have found out that Drs care more about racking up office visits and $$$ than they care about thier patients. It is sad but true. I almost lost my mind before my IC diagnosis and more so before the thyroid diagnosis. Thank god I am better! Glad you are feeling better! Take care!:)

Hi Jessica!
I'm sorry that they misdiagnosed you! I'm glad that you found out what was really the problem! My situation was just the opposite of yours. I was dx'd with hyperthyroidism (simply because I complained of something stuck in my throat and I have big eyes) If my husband hadn't threatened to go to the docs superiors I would've been sent home with food in my throat(had it for 2 days and without water). I was so dehydrated that I was admitted for an IV and upper GI which showed that I actually had food stuck in a stricture. I had to have my esophagus stretched. I had what is called LPR(laryngeal pharyngeal reflux) which caused my throat to be sore with two ear infections.
You are so right that docs make mistakes. I also had labs done that proved that I didn't have hyperthyroidism. We have to research what's going on with our bodies. I guess that's why they call it the "practice of medicine".
I'm glad that you feel much better finding out what was really wrong.
Best wishes,
Teela

FYI stay far away from peppermint, spearmint, and tea if you have GERD. They are all high on the list of irritants.

Hello again,
Well, I continued to have that feeling in my throat and allergy meds didn't seem to be helping. I went to see the NP today and she felt of my throat and told me to swallow a couple of times and she said my thyroid feels enlarged. She sent me to the lab for blood work and I have to go back November 10 to see the doctor. She also tested me for anemia. I'm more worried about the enlarged thyroid. Could that be causing my urinary retention or IC symptoms?
Thanks for your help.

Hi AnnieMac,
I'm sorry that the allergy meds didn't work for your throat. I looked and looked and couldn't find anything that would indicate that an enlarged thyroid could cause IC symptoms or urinary retention. It may just be that you have an enlarged thyroid and IC. At first the ER doc told me that I had an enlarged thyroid aside from having IC but it turned out that I didn't have an enlarged thyroid at all, I just had GERDs which caused my esophagus to shrink from the acid(I'm sorry if I told you this before). The shrinking caused foods to get stuck when I swallowed.
I hope you get to the bottom of this and please keep us posted on what your doc says.
Good Luck!

I was getting ready to type that I had the same symptoms and it was my thyroid and then read that was it. Be sure to see a good endocrinologist. I had Hashimoto's thyroiditis- an autoimmune disorder- and had my thyroid removed. My thyroid was wrapping around my trachea, but from what I understand that is pretty rare;

Annie,
Any word on your thyroid results yet? Just noticed you are in Mass - do you happen to eat alot of seafood by chance? Iodine is in seafood (naturally) and if you eat alot of shellfish, it can cause your thyroid to enlarge from uptaking all the iodine sometimes - think "gout for the thyroid". Also, you could just have thyroiditis, which is basically just an infection of the thyroid and it will resolve on its own. It happens sometimes. Hopefully its nothing serious and you'll be back to feeling like your old self in no time :) But if it is something thyroid related (meaning your thyroid is off systemically), no worries there either, it can be controlled with meds and/or diet easily enough.
No, it cannot cause your IC related symptoms - however it can cause tiredness, muscle cramps (body), hair loss, and some other things. It is your body's thermostat, and works in conjunction with the hypothalamus and pituitary glands. I myself have Graves Disease (overactive) and had mine irradicated in 1999 and have to take Synthroid every day - just a little pill - and get my blood checked every 3 months to check my levels. Simple as that!
Prayers heading your way sweetie.
Hugs

Well, I got a call from the doctor's office, stating that my blood tests were normal, but I still need to see the doctor for enlarged thyroid. The NP told me to see the doctor next week, but the receptionist says she can't fit me in with the doctor until November 10. I don't if I can wait until then. I'm not sleeping well at all and it's affecting my everyday life and work. I'm anxious all the time, which isn't good for the rest of my issues. I even called my urogynecologist in Boston to see what they think, but I haven't heard back from them yet. I don't know what to do. I'm so exasperated.

I'm glad to hear that your blood tests were normal but I'm sorry that they can't get you in to see the doc until Nov. 10th! I don't know about you but I'm able to tolerate Chamomile tea to calm me down. I also take Benadryl to get some sleep. I hope that you can get in before then. Please let us know how that goes.

Annie,
Thats great your blood tests were normal, I'm assuming they tested your TSH, T4, Free T4 & T3's (normal thyroid tests). If those came back normal, then thats a good sign. Can you get a copy of your test results or just ask if they did those tests (just ask if they did a thyroid panel). If it is enlarged or you have an infection, it should have shown on those test results.
Try not to worry, I know its hard not to when you're not feeling well or have something longstanding going on, but it will just make you more anxiety ridden and thats not well. Think of it this way - if it were anything serious, you'd be in there quickly, right? Perhaps its just sinus issues (allergies) as you stated, I know my allergies and hubby's allergies are full blown this time of year and we are constantly taking Dimetapp every day to combat them. My lymph nodes in my neck feel very very large and it feels tight in my throat (like a pressing where a mans adam apple would be) but... doc says its just allergies and if I take my Benedryl once in a while (every other day) along with my Dimetapp, I'm okay.
Hang in there sweetie - you have 10 days to go. Try to get your mind on something else and try not to think the worst, you'll only freak yourself out and you dont want to end up in a panic attack or anything.
Lots of hugs
Brittany

Hi! Even though your tests are in normal range it does not mean that you are not hypothyroid. 5 is at the high end of normal which would give most severe hypo symptoms. Some people have severe hypothyroid symptoms at 3. Find out what your #`s are! The higher the # the more hypothyroid you are. I feel symptoms even when my TSH 1.8! My #`s were in normal range for a very long time until my symptoms were out of control. They kept telling me that it could not be my thyroid when I knew that it was! I had to sleep propped up on 3 pillows at night because I felt like I could not breathe. It was so hard to swallow food I would choke on even water sometimes. For me the choking sensation got worse until going on thyroid meds. But it was a year after having symptoms. I also started to have low grade fevers everyday, night sweats, anxiety, hair loss,50 lb weight gain, severe mood swings, muscle weakness, severe brain fog, memory problems, very very sick. After the second dose of thyroid meds I felt normal and the choking sensation went away along with every other symptom! Do not let them brush you off and say your labs are normal and not to worry about it that you are fine because you can still have an under functioning thyroid! TSH is a lousy test anyway and not that accurate. They should look for thyroid antibodies or Free T3 ,Free T4, Total T4.etc. They told me that I had GERD before being diagnosed and that my thyroid was slightly enlarged and not to worry about it! And that my several autoimmune diseases is the reason why I was sick! I do not believe in Drs anymore you just have to trust your instincts and keep searching until you find the right Dr! Take care and feel better! Let us know what happens at the Endocrinologist! Hugs!
Jessica
I'm also having problems swallowing. my thyroid came back normal. I'm .5 (normal range is .4-4.5). I mentioned to the doctor of my concern. I was hypothyroid after my first childbirth (some funky things happened to me during that csection), and hyperthryroid after my second. Years later doctor said your neck is huge and they did U/S it showed small cysts. I've been having my thyroid checked every two years and it's always been normal. My brother and mother are both on thyroxin. I told my doctor that a cousin had thryroid cancer.
anyway I said "I know it's normal range but....." he said you'd have weight loss. I told him I did, I was losing weight and then I gained it in a short time. My husband of course says, "oh she stopped eating because she was afraid of eating the wrong things"
anyway. he at least sent blood work to Mayo. My one and only panic attack starting with a feeling that I couldn't swallow, and then I hyperventilated

I just noticed your tests results were normaL. Ok. You are still supposed to get seen about an enlarged thyroid. If the results were really normal, then the thyroid is supposed to be. I have had hyperthyroidism.(in 1993) (then hypothyroidism after i was given too much iodine, or whatever is in the pill that I took) Ok. It took a while for me to get on the right dosage of Synthroid. In fact, my thyroid went over and underactive again because I was given too much and not enough Synthroid. Ok. You said you don't sleep too good. Your body speeds up with Hyperthyroidism. How about your heartbeat lalety? It would be up if you did have an overactive thyroid now.(causing less sleep) How about your weight? Yep! You would have lost some by now. You have been anxious as well. I could hardly stop my hands from shaking back then. That is a symptom as well. My thyroid is now normal because I have got right dosage of Synthroid to take every single day. Oh, well! Somebody did mention Graves Disease. That is also what I was told by the endocrinologist in Savannah. Ok, then. Let us know and be good.

Hello again,
Everyone has been so kind, I wanted to give you an update. I had an ultrasound and that came back showing an enlarged thyroid as well. I now have an appointment for a two-part scan on Dec. 2 and 3. They're also going to call me back next week with an appointment with an endocrinologist. Otherwise, things are still the same, still have trouble sleeping and swallowing, but at least things are moving in the right direction.
So, that's what's happening currently. Thank you everyone for your advice and kind thoughts. It really helps. I hope everyone here is doing well and keeping the faith. God Bless.

Hi AnnieMac,
I'm glad that you're getting some answers. I know that it is frustrating to have to wait on results and wonder what if they'll find something or not. I think the waiting and diagnosing is the most stressful but once you find out what's wrong then you can get on the right path to getting better! I've been in a 3 week flare and I'm trying to wait it out! Actually I'm doing everything that I do when I'm not in a flare and trying not to complain. I started having this problem & went to my ENT. He thinks it is laryngo-pharyngeal reflux. He said it is common. I had to stop taking first Detrol, & then Sanctura because of it. He switched the timing of my Nexium, had me raise the head of my matress, gargle w/ t tbspn of baking soda in one cup water, no acid foods (same as IC diet). Your ENT should have known what it was. I also have tongue burning, but the lump in my throat is the worst. With proper treatment, you feel better in 7-10 days. I would call the ENT again. Good luck!

Hi everyone,
Well, I had the thyroid scan done and just heard back. Everything is normal. But they still want me to see an endocrinologist. I don't understand. If anyone has any ideas on this, I would like to hear them.
I also have an appointment next week to see my PCP, and an allergist as well, so hopefully we'll get some answers. The endocrinologist appointment isn't until Feb. 5. Don't understand why so long on that either.
I'm kind of frustrated right now that while I am glad that they have not found anything serious, they can't tell me what my problem is in my throat.
Something else I am thinking about is my teeth. They are really bad and breaking all the time. Kind of delayed going to the dentist what with everything else going on with me, and I loathe going to the dentist. Who doesn't right? Anyway, does anybody think that this could in any way be related to my teeth, maybe an infection or something. Could that enlarge my thyroid? Anyway, looking forward to hearing what you guys think.
I hope everyone is doing well. Thanks for reading.

Hi AnnieMac,
I'm really glad that they didn't find anything on your scan. I know that you're frustrated because you need answers! When you mentioned that your teeth are bad too it made me think of how my dentist told me that acid reflux harms your teeth. Just as KarenAnne mentioned about having LPR, this disorder mimics thyroid problems at times( I went through all the test for thyroid to find out I had LPR which is bad on my teeth). Once I get the acid under control my lump in throat feeling goes away.
I pray that you get some answers soon AnnieMac!

Annie, Seriously, see an Ears, Nose, & Throat doc about your throat. My ENT told me these bladder drugs, unfortunately, are also making my LPR worse. When I was switched to Sanctura it was horrible, I couldn't even swallow. My thyroid was also normal even though I have the "lump" in my throat. Good luck & feel better soon.

I had problems with my throat years ago. It felt like there was a lump of something stuck inside my neck, near the base, making it hard to swallow and even breathe sometimes. It was just the most awful feeling! I tried a different doctor every month, had tests for this & that, but they couldn't find anything wrong.
I did notice that whenever I was out of town for a couple of days I'd begin to feel better. I'm just wondering if you've ever noticed that Annie?
Eventually we moved from that town and within a week my throat felt completely normal again. Though I never found out what caused my episode, I suspect that it must have been some sort of allergy or reaction to something in that environment.

Well, everyone, I have another update. I had the endoscopy and came back with a diagnosis of Barrett's esophagus and eosinophilic esophagitis, but NO precancerous cells were found..very relieved about that, she told me to stay on my GERD med, and I have another appointment with her next Friday and she wants to start me on a steroid spray, but she wants to talk to me first about the proper way to use the spray...unfortunately, she only sees patients on Tuesdays and Fridays, and Tuesday was full, so I am seeing her next Friday. She thinks the EE is caused by an allergen...we just don't know what...wondering about my meds...I am only on Elmiron and amitriptyline, could one of those be the culprit? I'd like to hear everyone's thoughts on this, please. I value your opinion. Thank you for all your help.

Hi Annie!
I'm glad that you found out what is causing your lump in throat issue. I also suffer from esophagitis. There's some type of connection with the esophagitis and allergies. Most times the allergen is not known. I doubt very seriously if the Elmiron or amitriptyline are the culprits. I've had this disorder for 3 years now and have had the endoscopy done twice to stretch my espophagus. Right now I have the lump in my throat feeling. When I experience this I have problems swallowing which lets me know that I need to resort to taking my antacids and eating very bland foods. The point is to manage the GERDs (sometimes hard for me because I'm not always aware of the acid reflux until it is really bad).
I hope that your healing process is underway and you are feeling good again.

Hi everyone,
I saw the gastroenterologist today and she gave me a new prescription for omeprazole to take twice a day now and she wants me to have allergy testing for foods. Considering everything I have seems to be food related, this seems to be good idea all around. She also wants me to do yoga and meditate to help with stress, which definitely aggravates everything. I hate the fact that I have all these issues, but I am glad that I am getting a treatment plan underway. She also suggested that I see a nutritionist after the allergy testing so I can put together a diet for all of these conditions.
Thanks again for listening. This is such a wonderfully helpful and supportive group. I hope everyone is doing well. God Bless.

Hi AnnieMac,
I looked treatment for Barrett's esophagus and there are several new treatments available. One treatment is called BARRX(radiofrequency Albation) It's a new endo technique used to treat this disorder for patients with or without dysplasia. Another treatment is called Photodynamic Therapy(PDT) this is when there are abnormal cells that are present. The elimination diet is also a form of treatment.
Let us know how things go.

I had the needle biopsy on the nodule and it was not cancerous. Thank God! Next I will reschedule my appointment for the food allergy testing.
Thank you everyone for your support!

Thank God it was not cancer! I see my ENT for my throat follow up in two weeks. It seems when we have IC, that alot of us have other problems too. One of my friend's daughter has IC & had a horrible rash when she was flaring.
My throat reflux calms down for awhile & then comes back with a vengeance. Now my mouth is burning too. If we just had the IC it would be bad enough, but we have so much else going on. I literally have doctor's appointments every day. You have been having one test after the other. You are soooo brave & I hope this all gets resolved for you real soon. Karen

KarenAnne,
I know exactly what you mean. I have LPR. Sometimes I'm fine and the out of nowhere the burning is back(throat and ears). I guess it's just like flares, one day you're ok and then one day you're in a flare. Unfortunately, we do have other issues along with IC. I get tired of the doctor appointments.
I found out about my GERDs shortly before I found out about my IC. Wouldn't it be great if they found a cure for IC and it got rid of the other illnesses too(fibro, GERDS, Vulvodynia, Migraines etc...)?

well, i have had my food allergy testing and was found to be allergic to NOTHING!
BUT...I had to be off the amitriptyline for 5 days before the testing and I have just realized that for the last few days, I have had no trouble swallowing. I thought it was because I was avoiding wheat...but I ate wheat today after the testing and no problems...but realized I have been off the amitriptyline for 5 days, so wondering if anyone had trouble swallowing while on this med?
I hope you are all well. Thank you for your feedback and help, so greatly appreciated!

Wow Annie,
no allergic reaction at all? I'm sorry that you still haven't really found out what is causing the swallowing problems. I know that if I keep my GERDS/LPR under control I do not experience swallowing problems. When the acid reflux starts getting bad(when I notice it) I immediately start correcting the problem by getting the acid under control and my lump in throat/swallowing problems disappear. I hope you can get a handle on the problem soon.
Best Wishes,
Aleet7
