Has anyone had a UTI as a result of getting instills? My RN let me know that I had one (I was doing so great on instills that it masked the pain). She put me on Cipro for 5 days which was great but then I actually did start feeling pain, so she put me on 5 days of Levaquin. I've had 3 days of the Levaquin but today, am having breakthrough pain, which is really really weird. I'm concerned I have a resistant UTI. I may have to try Macrobid next for a longer period of time, but it's a little weird to me that Levaquin may not be knocking it out.

Has anyone here had an antibiotic-resistant UTI, and what did you do about it? Thanks!!

did they do a culture on the urine? That should tell which bacteria is present and what antibiotic it is resistant too. I was on three diferent antibiotics when I had a bad kidney infection in July.

A culture and sensitivity test should identify which antibiotic will be most effective for your specific infection.

Yes, I have bacterial resistance to a few antibitoics. I have been battleing a UTI since May. I take antibitoics for 14 days, then three weeks later the same UTI is back. Your doctor should be doing a culture with a drug sensitivity test. This will tell them what antibitoics will kill the bacteria you have. I know that the bacteria I have is resistant to cipro, levaquin, amoxacillin, gentamicin. I am now being put on low dose keflex once a day for 3 months to see if it will stop this UTI.
I would definitely make sure they did a culture and sensitivity. It is not good at all to take an antibiotic without knowing if it is sensitive to the bacteria. I have to say, I was also doing the instillations and they were helping me as well. I did them for a while and then all of a sudden I started getting UTI's and this is how I believe I got this UTI that wont go away. A new Uro I saw said it is possible that the bacteria have colonized in my bladder ( meaning they took up living quaters in there). This can happen when you catheterize alot I have been told. Anyhow, I hope you begin to feel better soon.

I don't know if I can say it is from the install or the Pt or something else. My doc. just called me to let me know that the Urine I left on Monday shows an UTI infection. He wants me to pick up new med. today.:woohoo:

I hope you can get things figured out and feel better soon.

Thanks for all your comments - they are helpful.

It turns out the UTI cleared before I even started the antibiotics -- I finally got the culture results back and the RN and I figured out that after one of the instills, I got a UTI, and then after the next instill, it cleared. She said it was probably because the instills contain an antibiotic that went into the bladder and probably cleared the UTI. Unfortunately since the results have been taking 4-5 days to come back from Quest, I had already been started on Cipro before knowing it was cleared!! Turns out I had a yeast infection from the Cipro, but the pain was a bladder flare connected to the yst infection. (I'm still unsure how if yeast is in one part of your body, it can cause a flare in the bladder!) But anyway, thinking that the UTI was resistant and not understanding it was yeast causing the pain, I went on Levaquin after that and the yeast of course got even stronger. The good news is, once we figured all that out, one dose of Gynazole and one Diflucan (plus no sugar or bread in diet) seems to have made things right in only a couple of days.

Who knew? Live and learn!!!

Chloe68,
I was just wondering, do you know what kind of antibitoic they put in your instillation? I also was doing instillations and I started getting the UTI's so I have stopped doing them for awhile due to that. I am interested in what antibitoic you put in yours?

Hi Jen,

I'll look at my script this weekend and let you know what kind of antibiotic it is!

My instillation cocktail includes Gentamicin. That is supposed to prevent infection but I'm not convinced. If I have some available I will take one Levaquin after each instill (I do my own now) as a precaution. Hope that helps. Ratchada

I know gentamicin would not work for me, my bacteria are already resistant to it. When I get a UTI my sensitivity always says that my bacteria are resistant to it. Funny, because I have never even taken this drug in my life so I have no clue how I became resitant to it.

Hi Jen,

The antibiotic in my instill is gentamycin. Was this in your instills too? If so, maybe this is how you became resistant to it. Check to see what antibiotic, if any, was/is part of your instill cocktail.
