Hi~
I have a question that I am hoping someone can answer. I currently have been on the Depo Shot for about a year and within the last five months I have had a problem with bleeding heavily sometimes for a week sometimes it last for three weeks. My Gyn did a hystoscopy a couple weeks ago. Everything checked out, as far as no cancer. My thyroid tests came back good. So there is no explantion for why all of the heavy bleeding. My doc does not seem to think that I will respond to hormones only because of how I am currently responding to them. So he has suggested a Hysteroctomy just of the Uterus being that this is the only way the bleeding will truly stop. I am not opposed to this idea (even though my husband is literally going for his vasectomy consult tom, just my luck) I am terrified of how my body will survive it. I have been on Elimiron for almost five months and it is starting to get better. I am going to discuss this with my uro before I would ever say yes or no. But has anyone else been through this. How is the recovery? etc.
I appreciate any and all help.

Yes I had a hysterectomy January 11th. Mine was full and abdominal and it took slightly over 4 weeks to recover. It is shorter if you have it through the vagina. My IC has gotten slightly worse since it....only that I have pain more frequently....how long that will last is un known but doc did say my endo pain would go down in time...so I have hope that it may be temporary.
Good luck on getting the answers you need.

I had hysterectomy 12 yrs. ago before diagnosed w/ ic. Had severe endo and tried all the treatments for 3 yrs. It was the best thing I could have done. Once I recovered I was much better than new, never have periods or associated back pain, cramps, lots of bleeding or diareeha, etc., blah, blah. My dr. knew how vain I was so he cut way way low so in a bikini you can't even see the scar.
Good luck with your decision and feeling better,
Julie

Kim I am going to tell you my experience with this. After my son was born in 1996 I also started the Depo shots. Also this was about around the same time I started having IC prob. but at the time did not know. Anywho I started having major problems with my periods heavy bleeding cramping etc. Did not have a period that would last at long as yours. But my gyno and i did everything birth control hormono. and nothing worked. So as a last resorted we decided to do a hystrectomty of utuers (SP) only. The only thing it stopped was the bleeding, YEAH (who really likes dealing with that monthly). Pain and everything else is still there. Later after my gyno and I found I did have IC he told me that doing a hyst. was probly unwarr3nted because sometimes IC and the pelvic area go hand in hand. Please think hard before you have a hystrectomy. I was only 26 and I got a divorce and remarried about 4 years ago and now I cannot have anymore kids. I also felt I had a peice of me removed because of IC.
That being said for endomot. and fibroids and other major girl problems a hystrectomy was and is a blessing but there are draw backs. I had a vaginal hystrectomy so recovery time was better. I did stay in the hospitail for 3 days,.
I wish you the best:angel:

I had a complete hysterectomy (uterus & ovaries) nine months ago (July 15, 2003). A urologist had referred me to a gynecologist thinking that my bladder trouble was most likely GYN related. I was diagnozed with fibroids and endometriosis. Birth control pills didn't help so I had the surgery. Unfortunately, it didn't do much for my IC! :( The only good thing is not having to deal with ovulation and PMS which always made my IC unbearable. :yikes: Psychologically, I also feel like I have lost a part of me. I do feel like less of a woman. Plus, I have never had children and I am single. I guess motherhood just wasn't meant for me.
Before choosing a hysterectomy, I would not only weigh the physical risks as recommended by other ladies here, but also the emotional risks. Make sure there really isn't any other alternative for you. Get a second, third or more opinions if needed.
Good luck to you,

I had one 12 yrs. ago, when my kids were 4 and 6. Disabled from Severe endo, best thing I ever did, pain was gone. I'm sorry you were not able to have children if that;s what you wanted.
Uro I left, thinks ic caused by hystro., etc. cuz i had lots of female problems and other standard that go along with ic. Another words if I'd not had hysto, probably wouldn't have ic now.
Only difficulty is hot flashes now, finding proper hrt. Also weight gain and disabled now 14 months. from ic and had to give the gym a rest. That was hardest, was there 4-6 mornings a week and to the office by 8:30am.
I miss my life as I once knew it and want it BACK, NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Best wishes to you,
Julie
