Ok - let me see if I understand this. I am currently working (but using up all of my vacation time to go to PT and Dr. appts).
Do I have to do short or long term disability before I can file and get SS disability? Someone said you have to be off work for 5 months before SS will pay. I can't be off work that long without a paycheck.

As far as short term and long term disability each place of employment is different. You really need to find out what your employer offers to you.
Social security Disability is for people that can not work.
Call SSD or go online here is a link to many common questions.

Hi,
I am on STD... I first had to use a week of my PTO time, then the STD kicked in.. once it was approved. Which took almost two weeks.
However, since i have not been with my company for a year, my job is not protected under the Family Medical Act. So that is something you want to check into.
Thank goodness, my boss was very understanding about it all, and was the wrong that brought up going on STD... I do work for a huge company, that is nation wide.. so they have great benefits in that sort. But good luck.. It is worth checking into.
