Diagnosed today
Hi everyone,
My name is Dorinda and I am 35. I was diagnosed today with IC. It has been 3 long years of pain and a hysterectomy to finally find out what is going on. I am a bit overwhelmed with this disease. My doctor has prescribed Elmiron and urelle. She also suggested the diet, but I have no clue what to do with that. I do know that green tea and chocolate really make me hurt, but the doctor gave me no info on the diet. It is such a relief to know that this is not just in my head that there is really something wrong. I am just overwhelmed right now. Thanks for reading.

:welcome: to the ICN... Three years is a long time not knowing what is causing your symptoms. I am so sorry that it took so long, but that is not really very unusual.
It is very normal to be overwhelmed when you are first diagnosed. Don't let that bother you. Take some time to read the great information available in this site. There is hope and there is help.
This is the link to the IC Diet: http://www.ic-network.com/diet/
It takes a little while to hunt out all the valuable information, but it is so worth it. I learned most of what I know about IC from this site in the many articles and the posts from other members.
I am really glad you found your way to the ICN. If you have questions, feel free to ask. That is why we are here.

Hi Dorinda, and welcome. I also suffered for years and underwent a hysterectomy (maybe the pain was from the fibroids...) before finally being diagnosed with IC. It sounds as if you are on the right track with your response to this. The IC diet helped me immensely. As you have noticed, what you eat does affect how your bladder feels. It took me awhile to accept that. Once you have checked out the handbook and tried the diet you might want to try one of the cookbooks to keep you from getting bored with the food. Once you are stable on the diet you might even want to experiement a little with other foods. I have found that I can have a little bit of foods that are usually problematic, as long as I don't eat much or eat them often. I have a little piece of chocolate every day, and I have a small serving of yogurt (1/3 cup max). It took me over a year to work up to that, but now I can do it. You can find out a lot on this site from the publications and articles and from the people. I've gotten many helpful warm responses when I had questions. You are not alone in this. Take care. barb

Thanks SharonA and mbhbarb. I am going to look up the things you suggested today and try and get a handle on things. Since I had the cysostomy yesterday I have been in agony. My urelle is not working as well as it did the last time. The doctor said my bladder does not like being cathered. I am going to look at a lot of things on this web site to try and find relief. Thanks again for your kind words.
