hello. I had my first rescue instill done today at the doctors office. they numbed my urethra by putting lidocaine jelly on one of those big qtips that would be used to swab throat and inserted it into my urethra...ouch!!!...has anyone else had this done at their doctors office? Is there a better way for them to numb me? The nurse said that she no longer used the urojets because the lidocaine leaks out. It was extremely painful having the qtip inserted into my urethra. so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I don't need lidocaine for numbing the urethra but ICers that do have applied it directly to the catheter. They use a lidocaine gel, not the liquid. I'm not sure if that would work on a urojet or not. I have always used an 8fr pediatric feeding tube for the catheter.

Prior to my instills, the nurse would insert an entire syringe of lidocaine gel/jelly into my urethra. Then she would wait about 10 to 15 minutes before inserting the catheter. It didn't help all that much in terms of reducing the immediate pain of the catheter, but I could sure tell a difference after the instillation was over. It was just very soothing.

That is how mine was done, the nurse injected lidocaine Jelly with the syringe first, waited a few minutes and then used the pediatric cath..

thankyou all for your replies. I called and asked the medical assistant who does the intills if she would use the urojet next time and a smaller catherter. says she has to ask the doctor and would let me know tomorrow sometime. I pray the doctor says yes. I am always so scared of someone saying no since I have heard that so very many times with doctors relating to this condition. Hope everyone is well.
