Let me try and be brief. After 2 1/2 years of misdiagnosing, 3 weeks ago I was diagnosed with IC after exploratory surgery. I was given a brief IC diet sheet and four different medications, Vesicare, Hydracodone,Amitriptyline and Phnazopyridine. My question is: Before I was diagnose, I had absolutley no pain what so ever. My only complaint was I was urinating a LOT. Now that I am on the medication, I go hours where I need to urinate and can't. I will stand at the urinal for 30-40 minutes with pain shooting up my you know what and finally urinate. When I actually start the pain goes away. I have found some food makes the pain worst but it seems like it happens every day for the last 1 1/2 weeks. I have my follow up with my doctor tomorrow and am going to ask him. I am just wondering if this is normal when you are started on the meds for IC.
Thanks,
Tim

Tim,:welcome: To the ICN
The medications you are on can cause retention!!! And you will feel like you have to go but can't..And this will cause you pain!! Amitriptyline, Vesicare. And have heard some narcoctics can. I for one cannot take any OAB meds and a lot of ICers have problems with them. Now they do help some but we are all differant. Now the Amitriptyline can also cause retention in ICers. But it is prob the Vesicare causing this. I would talk to your Dr about just starting one med at a time! and seeing if the problem is still there with that med. I wish you the best...

I was on Vesicare for over a year and it never helped with OAB...but I was afraid to come off it. I came off it 2 weeks ago and no problems at all and no difference with frequency. Most of my frequency comes from foods that irritate the bladder and sometimes frequency is the only symptom I have from a food. I use the IC diet and record everything that goes in my mouth. I also record any symptoms and meds I take and when I have a reaction to something it comes pretty clear what it is. READ LABELS before you buy or eat foods. You will be amazed what is in them, for instance Vinegar in hamburger buns and soy in margarine.
I am on Elmiron 3 x a day and had 9 bladder instillations and they saved my life!!
I am pretty pain free now and it's only been about 2 months since my diagnosis. I wish you good luck. Jo

:welcome: to the IC Network...
I agree that you should talk with you doctor about what is happening since being prescribed these meds. It is very possible that one of them is causing you to have retention.
You mentioned your diet. If you haven't already found the IC Diet, you can find the link to the Diet in my signature below. Your diet can play a very important role in what type of symptoms you have. There is a lot of information regarding foods/drinks on this site.

All the meds you are taking can cause retention issues, especially the OAB meds, and the amitryptline. I guess the only way you are going to know is to take only 1 of the meds at a time. I would talk to your doc about it. Hope you get to feeling better.

I stopped taking the OAB medicine I was taking above and have only been taking Prelief before meals. Half the items on the do not eat list I can now eat with no problems. I guess I am lucky.
Beer, tomatoes, nuts and cheese is still a no-no

That is good news. How is your frequency? If it's down too that's a home run. I have been testing my meds one at a time and the darker the color of the pill the more I react to it. I finally have tested all of them and got the replacements filled today. The Dr. gave me samples of the new meds so I didn't get the scripts filled until I knew they were safe.

5-7 times during day and twice at night. Before I was 10-15 times during day and 6-8 times a night.

It really sounds like the OAB meds were causing a lot of your problems.
