I have a question for any of you that have high blood pressure and take medicine for it.

Mine is not SKY HIGH, but its ranges 140/85-170/100 at times.

So I have been prescribed 2 different kinds in the past few months.

The first was a Diuretic, which was a water pill:

HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE (HCTZ) 25MG

This was a big NO NO for me, since I was running to the bathroom like crazy...hence WATER pill. that and IC does not mix.

SO then I was given a Beta blocker:

Toprol XL 25mg, and I have been taking it for about a month now...

and I have been hurting worse, bladder wise...like my bladder feels like its burning more...:cussing: since I started it.

So I know that certain meds can flare people...

I mean food flares...Medicine flares.

So I just wanted to know if anyone knows of a beta blocker that has worked for them better?

I am going to talk to my New Internal medicine dr on tuesday about this...

And I have ruled out infection...so it's not a UTI.

I take Benicar which has 25 mg of HCTZ. I find if I take it first thing in the morning, I have some frequency for a coupld of hours, but after that, it's not bad at all.

I'm on Toprol XL 100mgs (started on this prior to IC), and just 2 weeks ago added Azor 5/20 (calcium channel blocker; works by relaxing the heart muscle and blood vessels). I havent had any issues with either medication.

Have you tried diet and exercise instead of meds to lower your pressure? Your readings arent too terribly high that meds would definitely be a first course of action.

Hopefully your Dr can come up with something that works for you.
Wishing you well...

If I could get outta bed on most days, i'd surely be one to exercise...im just in so much bladder pain, it hurts to just walk these days...

and i hardly eat...

We'll see what the dr says on tuesday.

Thanks for the feedback.:smile tee

170/100 is too high especially with the new american heart standards for bp that 85 diastolic with new standards is on the Edge. Toprol that was mentioned is a good beta blocker. I take tenormin twice a day also a beta blocker. THere is quite a choice of beta blockers- they also can help anxiety a few of them are given for anxiety at times instead of bp . VIcky
