Are you having it under general anesthesia I hope? Sorry....you already answered that part!.
If so, you will be sore normally once you get home. I remember begging for Taco Bell on the way home from my first one, but don't eat that, I was definitely sorry! My doctor gave my nurse orders to give me the pain meds that I needed as I was waking up. When I got home, the doctor also put the DMSO treatment in me, so that was bothersome, but I bet they don't put as heavy a concentration in you anymore. I often get sick from anesthesia, so I was given Phengren supp as well as pain meds and I slept much of the first day away. I got up to pee several times, but my husband helped me the first few times, then I was able to get up on my own. by the 2nd and third day, I was able to sit up in bed pretty well and watch TV. I even did some work on my work laptop when I felt like it. I handled workers' comp claims, so no telling what my adjuster notes were like, but at least I had a little bit of energy. In all reality, I think if I wouldn't have been so nauseaus, I probably would have done better, than I did. Certainly I was sore, buy my meds were able to manage it. I was also able to take long hot baths when I wasn't able to empty my bladder very well.
It has been well over 10 years since I had mine, but I remember my husband fixing me peanut butter toast and givine me banana popsicles. That was about all I was able to keep down. By the 3rd day, I was able to join the family in the den for a few hours.
I was very fortunate, my doctor gave me plenty of meds, especially meds to help with my nausea and took me off work for a week so that I could heal. I don't heal very quickly so he was very good about allowing me to heal before I went back to work. The only issues that I can truly remember is trying to empty my bladder and keeping up with the meds I was taking. My husband bought me a pill box, so I wouldn't forget if I took my meds or not. Always with surgery, try to eat something with protein which will allow you to at least have more energy and allow your body to heal as quickly as possible. Also get as much rest as you can.
Hugs and prayers for a quick recovery.

I'm not sure I Would call it pain. It is more like being sore. Or sort of like having a toothache but instead of in your mouth it's in your bladder area. The period cramps I have are a whole lot worse then the 'pain" from the distention and I had it done twice in the beginning. I took it easy for 3 days too and then with each day did a few more things. I also had pain medication for it. Good luck. Hope all goes well for you.

For me, the procedure and afterwards was not all that bad and I was expecting it to be. I stayed in bed for the afternoon and rested, but got bored with that. I got up, made myself a bowl of oatmeal and sat in the living room with Hubby and watched TV. I did not need to take the pain med that the uro sent me home with. I was fine the next day but did rest off and on.

Hi. I had 3 of the hydrodistentions done. Not sure if that's what you're getting done. All three of them hurt me. The pain got better after 2 days or so and drugs. But the last one put me in a 3 month flare. I bled a lot from all three. and peeing made me screamfor the first day. I never want one again. Now that was my experience. After the second one, I had a several month remission, so that one was worth it I guess. Good luck to you. Everyone reacts differently. :bunny:

I'll take a few days off work for sure and then I see how I feel..

Hi April,
I have had 2 hydro's and they are not bad at all. First of all, they use general anesthesia on me (my bladder can't accomodate much urine). When I wake up in recovery, I have some discomfort, but the recovery room nurse used a lidocaine pen on my urethra and that helped the urethral pain and burning. They gave me one to take home even. They make sure I am ok and not too groggy, then I get discharged with some pain meds (darvocet, vicodin, etc). Honestly, I have done instillations, and hydro's are much more tolerable than other invasive treatments. I had to take the day off and I had to take the next day off as well. Make sure you have a ride from the hospital.

I posted a thread asking if anyones story sounded like mine. I am undergoing the many tests to get to a diagnosis. My urologist is unsure what is causing the hemoturia and has currently sent off my specimen to an endocrenologist. in the meantime we have the simple scope test for my bladder coming up on the 27th of this month. I have been contemplating the distention but she scared me by telling me a few of her IC patients bladders ruptured during the process. To backtrack a bit, the first test was an IVP x-ray. The radiologist stated that he noticed a narrowing of my ureter tube. The urologist claims he was to young to practice medicine, now she dropped the bombshell that she is retiring in 2 months. What should I do, go for the distention or stick to the simple test for starters? I beleive my case is mild, I rarely have sever painful flareups. I am somewhat successful with Ditropan if I avoid that bad foods and now I only get up 2xs a night to pee. However I still cannot handle a long ride in the car, it makes my bladder sensitive and urgency occur for days. I also cramp often and it feels like after i void and especially at night my bladder will not relax.

I have been recently diagnosed with IC after a bladder biopsy. The doctor did a bladder distention as well. When I got home I was kind of High. I was not sick though. I felt a little nausous after a couple of hours and just slept for a while. My symptoms acted up for about 2-3 weeks. I took pain meds and pyridium to relieve the pain. That helped. The distention did not make the IC change though. I am on Elmiron so hopefully after 6 weeks it will atart working. Try drinking 1/2 tsp. of baking soda in water.( it takes gross) but it makes your urine less acidic. Don't take for than 2 tsp. in one day though. I heating pad on my stomach or between my legs really helps. Especially when I go to sleep at night. You might want to get one that turns off by itself. Hope everything goes well.
