So for the last couple days , my 4 1/2 yr old has been complaining on and off that her vagina hurts . Sometimes it hurts when she pees sometimes it just hurts . Nothing looked abnormal in there but I made a doctors appt for her . They tested her urine and while there was no sign of infection there was blood in it . They gave us bactrim and are sending out cultures . I explained to the doc about myself having IC and I asked her what do we do if the cultures come back negative ? She said that they would retest her urine in a couple weeks to see if its cleared up . Im assuming that if it doesnt they will do more tests but Im thinking that if there is still blood in her urine Im going to ask for a referral to see a Peds uro . I know I shouldnt be so worried just yet but I want to cry at the thought if its IC . I have already ,prior to this , worried that one of my kids could wind up w this horrible disease and have to learn how to exist w it , it scares me so much !!! She hasnt had any trauma of any sort down there , what else could cause a 4 yr old blood in her urine ? I thought and please please correct me if Im wrong , that if you had a urinary or kidney inf that by the time theres blood in the urine that usually theres also a considerable amount of protein to suugest inf along w it ? I always have blood in my urine every time its checked , from my IC and Im so scared that this could be a sign for my baby . Any suggestions or theories ?? Please share in any way you can , Im so worried about her now ! Thank you in advance for your help !!
Lauren
My 7 year old had something similar last year (Spring 2007) - he had abdominal pain off and on for a few hours and then visible blood in his urine. We took him right to an urgent care, but they found no infection at all. They did a dipstick, UA and a culture.
He just had a well child visit today and our family doctor was talking about that. He said sometimes kids that young will get kidney stones - and said that sometimes constipation can cause some blood in the urine.
My 7 year old never had it happen again. It was very strange.

I'm so sorry. I was worried about my daughter (now 6) but it was a UTI. She has had a few UTI's starting when she was around 2 1/2 or 3. Usually they come after stomach viruses.

While its hard not to worry when its our children, you have no real reason to worry just yet. Worrying is only going to cause you more stress and possibly upset your child.
I know--those words are easy for me to sit here and say; and I cant honestly say that I wouldnt be worried if it was my child.
Know that I'm hoping its nothing more than a simple UTI, and your daughter starts feeling better very soon!!!
Hang in there mom!!!

I agree with Diana - dont worry just yet even though its really hard not to, I know. All 3 of my kids have had UTI's at some stage in their lives and because they were kids, they've immediately had to have urodynamics performed (its standard to do so by my peds, he said to ensure everything is working properly and there is no reflux). My youngest once was screaming so badly his tummy hurt (and was pointing to his bladder area), we had to take him to the ER his bladder was SOOO distended - I was freaked out! The nurses had to cath him (no small feat there!) and they kept saying "the most we'll get out is about 100 cc's for his age" (he was about 4 at the time) - well..... they cathed and they got out nearly 700! I FREAKED and so did the nurses! SO much so they called the doctor in - my poor baby gave himself a hydro basically and his little bladder stretched way beyond what it should have. I immediately started to wonder IC, what caused the severe retention, and everything else. Turns out it was coldl medicine he was on caused the retention (yeah, that went into the trashcan really fast!) Ultrasounds, scans and a ton of tests later, he's okay. He does have a rather large bladder for his age but all in all, he's okay. No reflux of the kidneys either :). WHEW! My daughter has had a UTI once and they did the urodynamic and ultrasound on her to ensure no relux there either - she's okay but her bladder is smaller. She is nearly 18 now and I'm in constant fear because she always has to go to the bathroom and goes in small amounts - but it never hurts her or anything. I'm ever the watchful mother  - if she knew she'd be horrified I'm sure LOL. But she's okay and no other UTI's in over 10 years.
Does your daughter use bubble bath or anything like that? I threw all my bubble baths and scented soaps away as soon as I came down with IC and my kids aren't allowed to use them either. And I ensure they all wear only cotton underwear as well, yes even at nearly 18 I still make sure she buys all cotton LOL. You also might want to let her sleep without panties on for a few days, she might squawk a little bit but just tell her it will make her feel better. :)
Hope she feels better soon, and try not to worry mom. :)
Hugs

I agree that those bubble things that clean kids by just playing in the tub can be a real problem. You might want to switch her to a hypoallergenic soap for a while to see if that might be a problem. And I agree that cotton underpants are a good idea. You might also make sure you use the same laundry detergent all the time --- and double rinse her unders if the problem doesn't resolve very quickly.
The big thing is to take a deep breath and don't panic. It's not unusual for this to happen to children.
Warm hugs,
Donna

Thank you everyone for the advice and support :) I do not let any of my girls use bubble bath because when I was 7 yrs old I had a wicked UTI from it and dont want to risk my kiddies having them either . I do have only cotto panties for them and also let them have nakie time , especially in the summer so that they can get some air down there from being in jean shorts or wet bathing suits ( besides the fact that they LOVEEEE nakie time lol ) What really scared me about this was that her dip stick test was completely clear of any infection , there was just the blood , so I freaked ! Im sorry I forgot who mentioned children and kidney stones , but thank you because I was also wondering about that as well . They put her on bactrim for now until the cultures come back , if it stays negative for inf then we can stop the antibiotics then retest in a couple weeks to see if the blood went away to . BUT I think that if she has a another freak out about her vagina hurting ( where she was in tears ) Im just going to hi tail it to Children's Hospital In Phila and see what they say . Im just so scared I passed this on to her , Im so scared that if it is IC that she's only 4 and it breaks my heart to think that she would have no childhood because of this damned disease . I know I shouldnt get ahead of myself , but its one of my babies , its so hard not to freak out about this :shake: So please , please keep my baby in your prayers that its not IC !! Thank you so much for everything !!! ((( HUGS))))

Lauren,
Just a thought - is it possible that maybe she rubbed herself too hard while wiping and the blood maybe got in that way?? Does she look red and irritated at all down there? I know when my daughter was little she would get what she called "the itchies" sometimes after she would swim or play in the water (I attributed it to the chlorine) and at night, she would rub herself and scratch really badly and irritate everything to the point she would bleed. When she wiped, it would give blood sometimes and then she'd also get yeast infections, causing even more itching.
Hope your little one feels better soon
Hugs

Hey guys Tiernan's ( my daughter ) doctors office called me back to tell me that the culture came back positive and that she has a uti . They switched her fro bactrim to augmentin and after the anitbiotics are done we have to go back so that they can check her urine to make sure the infection has cleared . Phewww Im so relieved that it was JUST an infection !!! NOT that Im glad that she has one , but Im happy that there was a simple answer ! Thank all of you that said prayers and showed support !!! You guys are a blessing
