I had surgery a few days ago and during the surgery, they had to place a foley. I asked for the smallest one possible and they also taped it to my leg. I had to leave it in for 2.5 days and they took it out today. I am peeing blood and blood clots. They said it is normal to bleed after removing a foley, but the biggest problem I have is the pain in my lower left quadrant. I have a lidocaine gel pen... but I am really in a ton of pain. I have a PCA pump with Dilaudid... and there was an hour where it ran out and I waited for the nurse to bring more. By the time she came back, I was shaking, bawling hysterically, and unable to move due to the severe pain in my lower left quadrant. They ruled out all other problems. It is the IC... but I just wonder... how long will it take for the foley-induced pain to stop! This is horrible!:headbang:

I'm so sorry you are in pain -after I read your post I said a prayer for you and I'm hoping that you find relief with the medication at the hospital.:pray:

Thanks guys! I don't know why the nurse didn't get to me when I buzzed her. Someone else answered my page. First it was to tell them one monitor was beeping and was very loud. The lady said she'd send me nurse. The nurse didn't come by. Then I was getting really cold (my room has its own thermostat but I couldn't control the temp). So, I called to see if she would bring warm blankets along with checking on the machine. The lady said she'd be right there. Then my saline ran out and when that happens, it has an automatic turn-off mechanism and when that happens, the PCS machine stops working as well. So, I called again and still no nurse. I dragged myself out of the bed, crying, clutching my pelvis and limping out toward the nurse's station. She saw me and asked what I needed. She was never told that I paged her. She did feel bad... but still... my meds ran out (when I had been hitting the PCS for a dose every 10 minutes). So... it did take time to build up to where I needed to be. Because of my bladder pain, this is the main reason why they might keep me until Monday or Tuesday. I need the IV dilaudid (allergic to most pain meds).

Gosh... I just wish I didn't need that foley. My other surgeries, the surgeon let me skipp it. This time around, the surgery was going to be complex, involving scar tissue, and other issues. A complication with this surgery could be life-threatening... so they said the foley was required.

Sigh... well... I just hope this flair doesn't last that long! 10 days of a flare for you Mothergoose? Yikes! I can't imagine dealing with this pain/bleeding much longer. It has been 4 days since surgery thus far.

Every time I had surgery I requested not to be cathed , I even told them once " Seriously I dont mind if I pee all over myself , just dont put one in " But of course I have gotten one or 2 anyway w surgeris and it did take a couple days for that pain to calm down . I had surgery on my kidney once and between that and the foley that was in there for 3 days I peed nothing but blood( and some clots ) for at least a week , they told it was normal as well . But the pain is HORRIBLE . I feel for you honey I really do , Im so sorry that you feel this way (((hugs))) I hope that you start to feel better as well , if you dont , def speak up to your docs and let them know !!:pray: for a speedy recovery !!

Lauren... I begged and pleaded with them to not put a foley in. They said that my surgery is not straightforward... and they needed to evaluate my urine output, they had no choice but to cath me. I asked to use a hat in the toilet, but they wouldn't go for that at all. I was shaking in fear going back to the OR because I knew I'd wake up with the foley. That and the NG tube they had given me... it was a really rough recovery. I am making less blood clots now... and since I was on a blood thinner, the bleeding looked even more "scary". But what was nice is the nurses on my floor researched IC and printed information and left it on the nurses' station so they know what their "IC patient" is going thru. So, when they tried to force me to get out of bed and sit upright in a chair with the foley still in place... I refused. I said you will not get me out of bed until the foley comes out. I did have to go to radiology the second day with the foley in and I was bawling hysterically because sitting on the foley tube was so painful. I really had no idea it would be THAT bad. I was afraid of it... but it was horrific. I should be discharged in a day or two... so I am going to really enjoy resting at home. Thanks for the sympathy. The nurses looked at me like I was crazy when I came back from radiology bawling. Then they say the blood in my urine bag and I think they got a better understanding. Some blood is normal, but this was A LOT of blood.

Sigh... what a rough recovery period this has been!

Dear Born2Swim - a couple of things - First, I'm so sorry that you are going through this uncomfortable time - but it will settle down - I've had urethra irritation and it's no fun but it does subside.

Also - you need to speak or contact the person who oversees the nursing care and the hospital administrator to let them know how you were treated.

That is UNACCEPTABLE nursing care - I know because my mom is a nurse -and they need to be informed when a lack of responsiveness is going on at the hospital.

God bless you.

If you still have pain from the catheter and have visible blood, you really should be checked to be sure there isn't an infection working.
