I thought I had a UTI so I had a culture done 2 weeks ago. It came out negative but I think I erred in having it done the way I did.
It was mid day and I had been taking baking soda and water all morning. When I went in to take the test in the uro's office I really didn't have much to urinate as I had gone before I left the house and his office is close by so I just did a very puny little amount which was quite dilute.
I may be wrong but I think its important to try to leave off a potent specimen - as I did 2 months ago for my first UTI of the summer (!!) I hadn't urinated for hours before I went for the test and I really had to go and she could tell even from the dip test that there was a problem. The culture proved that I had one.
I have been having symptoms (burning, occasional painful urination, urge, frequency) ever since the negative culture 2 weeks ago.
Yesterday - I had a brand new symptom - my urine smelled like the monkey house at the zoo (very concentrated as I had not had any water for a few hours.) I KNEW there was something wrong. I did a home test FIRST THING (lots of very concentrated urine) this morning and it came out positive so I phoned the uro's office and 'am picking up Macrobid later today. I once read that you should take home tests first thing in the morning for truest results and I bet the same thing may apply at the uro's office . If you can't be there "first thing" - at least try give them a good, concentrated strong sample.
As I say, I'm still a beginner at all this so I may be quite wrong but, from my own experience, it just seems to make sense.
