My baby boy is dying. His name is Charger and he is the sweetest dog ever. He is such a mamas boy. He has been puking and wont drink water or eat any food. And the worst part is he is in Hawaii and I am here, so I wont even get to say goodbye.

And Hawaii is the WORST state ever for vets. I have called every single vet on the island and no one will take him until Monday afternoon. He could be gone by then! It will be 3 days of no water?

Does anyone here know anything we could do? Anyway to get him to drink water or even if WE can put an IV in him ourselves? I am so desperate. I KNEW something like this was going to happen before I could get to them. I am so upset

I'm so sorry. :( I was going to suggest a dropper, too, but I hope he can be seen by a vet so they can determine the cause for the vomiting and refusing drink and food.

I am sorry!! The same happened with my older dog...she was put on antibiotics and anti-nausea meds. And I was instructed to give her Pedialyte in small amounts throughout the day to prevent dehydration. She wouldn't drink it on her own, so I used a small cup to pour it in her mouth and then would hold her mouth shut til she swallowed, but leelee's idea of a med dropper is good, especially if Charger is a small dog or a turkey baster would work good, too, if he is larger. I really thought I was going to lose her, but I took several days off from work to take care of her and she pulled through. She was so ill I thought they would've put her on IV fluids and I probably would have insisted on that had I not been able to take off work to care for her.
I hope your pup pulls through!

Sarah,

I'm so sorry for you & Charger! What an awful situation to be in!

My old lab did the same thing. Like Briza, I used a small cup and sort of force-fed him water, holding his mouth until he swallowed. Hopefully it'll be enough to get Charger through until tommorrow when a vet can see him.

Hugs,
Vicki

One thing you might do is to call a vet where you are now and ask for advice. I'm not sure what can be done from this distance, but it's worth a try.

Maybe the dropper and use pedilyte. The vet has suggested it to me until she could see our pets the next day.

Im so brokenhearted, I just cant keep it together.
Donna, we have called the vet and they told us to go buy cottage cheese and rice and mix that together and try to get him to eat that, he wouldnt. Then they said to try to hold water in your hand and get him to drink it that way and that seems to work a little better. My husband has been pouring it in his mouth and holding it shut and he gags but gets a little down.
I HATE the vets in hawaii. We went through this when our dalmation died and they just would NOT see him, they flat out refused. Said there was a 6 month waiting list. The only way we even got a vet to put him to sleep was carrying him in the vets office and sitting there for 4 hours. The vet finally came out and took pity on us and put him down. She cried too. He lost 40 pounds in 3 days, his ribs were sticking out 2 inches from his skin.

Charger is a BIG dog, 130-140 pounds and unfortunately big dogs just don't live as long as other dogs and he is almost 10. I cant believe how fast they get sick. He was okay and bam, now he is just a wreck. He is such a mamas boy and I am sure he misses me so much right now. When my husband used to take them for walks, Charger would refuse to go until his mommy came, and if hubby tried to force him he would sneak back to the house and wait on the porch for me.
Oh why do animals break your heart like this? It truly hurts so badly.

Thank you for your support. I am going to have hubby try to turkey baster thing for the water.

Hang in there...the vet gave good advice about a food alternative but don't worry too much if he won't eat... definitely the most important thing is to keep him hydrated right now. Don't give up hope...it does sound very much like a bacterial tummy infection like my old dog had and you may very well be surprised that just a few days on antibiotics and antinausea meds along with the forced liquids he will make a turn for the better! And then he will want to eat...

I had the love of my life, a poodle and she lived to be 21. I lost her on the day that my grandbaby was born. I really believe I would have went to pieces had I not had the baby to hold. Have you tried boiled chicken, They will usually eat that if nothing else. My daughter had a german shepherd puppy and he had stomach problems from both ends. I gave him some -------lomotil--- for it and it settled him and and he went to sleep and rested for the night, The next day we took him to the vet and he told me that ordinally that was not the thing to do for a pet, but the fact that it was a narcotic for the diareaher( wrong spelling) but anyway , he said it kept him alive until we got him to the vet. He was resting and not so sick. I know most folks don't give their narcotics meds to their pets, but I was desperate. Being a big dog , they day it takes more than it does for a human. Sarah I hope this helps and you know I will pray for you and your baby. I know how bad it hurts when they are sick., Please keep us posted. I hope he makes it.

He is hanging in there everyone. Hubby got him to drink some water last night and he ate the boiled chicken - thank you to whoever suggested that- and some rice. He kept that down so we are hopeful. He is going to the vet today and taking Chargie with h im and he is just going to sit in the vets office until they treat him. No one could resist this sweet baby, he is a rottweiler/husky mix with bright brilliant blue eyes, he is gorgeous. I will post a pic later today.

Thanks for the support.

Just wondering if you have any up-dates on Charger, and how the visit to the vet went?

Hoping everything is okay!

Hi everyone,

I wanted to let you all know that my sweet baby boy is doing better! The vet gave him some water pills, put him on an IV for awhile and then they took a whole bunch of tests. They think he might have gotten ahold of one of the VERY poisnous tree frogs in Hilo. So many dogs/cats die every year in Hawaii from these frogs. They catch them and the outside of the frog is just covered in poison, so then obviously the dogs get it in their mouths. Our dogs had shots to help ward this off but it was obviously not enough in his case.

But we will see, it might not even be that. Either way he is a tad bit better, still not himself at all but at least he isnt puking every 3 minutes. I just hate losing animals, it is like part of your soul being ripped out. Thank you for all your support!

Sarah
