HI, I have problems with vaginal dryness due to a hysterectomy. I can't add back estogen in that area without alot of discomfort to my bladder. I've been using olive and canola oil for lubrication. I also battle yeast infections. Does anyone know if using oil could encourage yeast to grow, or further irritate an existing infection? Thanks, Grace

I also had a hysterectomy and have the vaginal dryness. I'm using estring which is working great. It's a ring with only 2 mg of estrogen and you insert it and it last for 3 months. I've been using this for over a year now.

Yeast grows in warm wet places.....so anything moist will increase the risk of getting a yeast infection. I am dry too...and on an antibiotic which puts me at high risk of a yeast infection.....which is why I see the driness as an advantage some times.....hope that helps.

The dryness was the reason I kept getting so many bladder infections. As soon as started the estring, I hardly ever get a bladder infection. I took premarin for 5 years because of the dryness and getting so many infections. As soon as I quit the premarin, the infections started again. Then the dr. put me on the estring and it has worked great.

Thanks for your replies. I am so frustrated as I believe the reason I'm getting yeast infections is because of vaginal dryness. I tried vagifem and coumpounded estriol and both of them flared up IC and I believe vulvodynia. This was before I knew I had IC. I am afraid any estro. will cause a flare. I work with a coumpouding pharmacist. We've done blood tests and I'm low on all my hormones. I do oral estro.& progesterone cream. I'm sure it is mostly due to stress as my mom passed away a year ago and 5 mo. later all this started:( Sorry I guess I needed to vent! Grace

ok we are all different. I am on constant treatment for yeast infections because I am on antibiotics. I do ok untill I lubricate a lot without getting some out. You may want to ask your doc if you can keep some difulcan on hand if you have a big problem.

Good luck

I use boric acid douches.

Just wondering, does the boric acid heal the infection or is it more preventitive ?? Also has anyone ever flared from using boric acid?? Thanks, Grace

The boric acid is a preventitive. I need it to counteract all the antiobiotics I take with the catheterizations. It hasn't caused any flares for me. I use it every other night but not during my period.

A Remedy For Yeast Infections!
I know this sounds a little gross but what the heck ,if it works.

My Gyn.said that you can actually use plain nonfat yogurt on your private area.I havent tried it but I trust her she is a great DR.

My gyn has also suggested using plain yogurt, but not as a remedy, more of a preventative measure. It's supposed to help repopulate the good bacteria that keeps the yeasties at bay.

Your doctor is right about the yoghurt. However, the only reason she wants you to use youghurt is for the acidophilus.

You don't have to slather a bunch of slimy yoghurt to get that. You can do several things:

1. Take acidophilus/bifidus/longum, etc. probiotic supplements, available at the health food store. I take them internally every day , esp. when antibiotics.

2. If I feel affected by the yeast in my privates, I take the top off one of the capsules and insert it into my vagina. That way just the good bacteria get in there.

3. Tea Tree Oil Suppositories - in a vegetable oil base - kills the yeast and lubricates!
