I am very confused right now. I have been having worsening symptoms and went to get a culture done last week. They also did a urinalysis. My urine cultrue showed 10,000-50,000 ecoli. But it found no leukocytes(WBC's). I also had a UTI back in May and it showed greater than 100,000 ecoli, but again no WBC's.
My urogyne has this protocol he goes by that you have to have moderate to large numbers of WBC's and large numbers of bacteria in order for it to be considered a UTI, that it cannot be considered a infection if there is no WBC's found in the UA. My reg doc I just seen for this UTI said that there does not always have to be WBC's, and that 10,000-50,000 ecoli should be treated even though they say it has to be 100,000 or more.
I am confused. I have major issues taking antibitoics and the bacteria I have with my UTI's are resistant to alot of the antibitoics(cipro, ampicillin, levoquin, gentamicin). I tried macrobid which will kill the bacteria, but had bad side effects(chest pain, chills) so I cant take it. The doc gave me bactrim. The last time I took it, after 7 days I ended up with a very sore mouth, throat and tongue, and a canker sore in my throat. I told my doc this, but she said I should try it again and as long as I do not have breathing issues or hives and such it is fine to take. I just hate taking antibitoics because I am so afraid I will become resistant to them all and then be up crap creek.
What I am wondering is, is it considered a UTI if you have more pain than usual, many bacteria but no WBC's? Can you hae a UTI without having WBC's detected in your urine?
