HHS Releases $191.5 Million to Help Low-Income Families With Home Heating Costs
HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson today announced the release of an additional $191.5 million in Low Income Home Energy Assistance (LIHEAP) funds for states, territories and tribes. Today's release brings the total amount made available so far this winter to almost $1.65 billion.

LIHEAP is a block grant program that helps eligible families pay the costs of heating their homes in the winter and cooling their homes in the summer. About 4.6 million low-income households receive assistance each year.

"January was a particularly cold and difficult month in many states," Secretary Thompson said. "These funds will help provide heat to low-income Americans keeping their homes and families safe and warm."

HHS will provide $99.4 million of this amount from LIHEAP contingency funds. These contingency funds are being released to states due to increases in many home heating fuel prices and the colder than normal January weather in a number of states.

All states will receive a portion of these funds, with $40 million allocated according to the same formula as the base block grant. The remaining funds will be provided to the 18 states (Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia) that experienced January temperatures that were much colder than normal. The District of Columbia will also receive part of this allocation.

The remaining $92.1 million going to states reflects the enactment of a full-year appropriation that provides a higher funding level than could be made available under the continuing resolution that funded LIHEAP through most of January.

"The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program prevents people from suffering unduly from the cold weather," said Wade F. Horn, Ph.D., assistant secretary for children and families. "It is a good example of how the government can intervene with compassion to improve people's lives."

HHS provides LIHEAP funds to states, territories and tribes, which run the programs that provide heating assistance to low-income residents. Individuals can apply for heating assistance through their state LIHEAP offices.

The state allocations follow. These totals include funds that will be provided directly to tribes in these states.

Thank you so much for posting this information. I recently called the assistance number in my area and they said there were no funds available. Since reading your post, I will check again.

Again, thank you so much,

~C

Rhonda,

I got one of those checks last week! Do you happen to know if these are monthly during the winter months or just a one time deal? The money helped so much, and it sure would be nice to have it for a few more months.

Thanks for being such an advocate for those of us barely hanging on financially! You're wonderful!

Hugs, Sandy

they help only one time a year there years run from oct to sept. i had them to help me and they go by your income even tho my power bill was 369.00 they paid 612.00 so if you get to them while the fund are there they will help also remember you have to get there early they only take the first 20 in line. good luck!

another thing i should add alot of time you can call a place and they will tell you they are out of funds but if you go to the place they will have funds alot of them dont want to give that information out on the phone because they already run out of funds so quickly with so many people in need. and if one place is out of funds go to another each state should have diff places with funds like where i live there is about ten diff places you can go to get help but some places will only give out like 50.00 and another place might only be able to give out 20.00 so its really a rat race the first one gets there gets the funds the best place to get help is the piedmont community action if you have one in your state. also alot of churchs help dont forget that and you dont have to be a member for them to help you. if you will go to your dss office in your commuty they will give you a list of places to go to but you have to be early because each place can only help so many people a day. the state makes them do that no matter how bad your in need if someone else gets there before you they will get it if they have all there infomation the information most places wants is the

1.last eight paycheck stubs or a copy our your check each mth you get

2.driver lis. of each adult in the house hold that is old enough to drive or a picture id.

3.all s.s. card of each person in the household and copys of your bills like power bill rent or housepayment water phone. they dont count car car inc. or payments on fun. in your house things like that. and if a member of your household dont have any income like an adult is not working or drawing a check you must go get something from the unemployemnt office.

i know this is alot but if you are fixing to lose your home because you need help with rent or your lights are fixing to be cut off it is worth it.
