I am not sure if this is related here or not, but it's the closest I could find.

I just asked my job for reimbursement for having to go over my cell phone minutes because of an emergency with a student who was climbing the bleachers at the school I was working at. I was in the middle of the field and there was no phone available nor was there anyone else out there. I had to use my cell phone to call for help.

The response to my request for reimbursement is that it was "my choice" to use my personal cell phone instead of school phones. Ok, so I should have left that student out in the field unsupervised while he's climbing the bleachers over and over and over (which is a possible danger to himself), to go use a school phone in order to obtain help.

I think this is outrageous! I am only asking for reimbursement for no more than probably 10 bucks, but of course, I went the extra mile and didn't get supported for it.

I have now notified the school NOT to use my cell phone to contact me at all. I very angry over this because I feel like if I didn't use my cell phone and something happened to the student, then it would be my fault b/c I didn't use all available resources. Then, when I did use my cell phone - and asked for minor reimbursement, then I am no longer supported.

Thanks for letting me vent!

Hi Stephanie,
I wish I could say I'm surprised, but I hear this nonsense all the time.

The most ridiculous one at my school was when a teacher intervened in breaking up a fight where one student was literally stomping another student's head on the ground. (The student on the ground ended up with a concussion, the student who was stomping him was arrested & charged with assault & was eventually expelled). The teacher was himself punched & his glasses knocked off & broken. He requested reimbursement for the broken glasses & was told, "No, it was your choice to intervene in the fight."

If he had not intervened in the fight, the boy on the ground might have been killed or brain damaged. What kind of choice is that?

The world has gone crazy. I wish people could come & spend a week & see what really goes on in our schools....

Sounds like one of those 'darned if you do/darned if you don't' situations!

For what it's worth, you know you did the right thing even if your school isn't going to do the right thing and reimburse you. Good for you!

Thats horrible !!! If the teacher wouldve just stood there and let them fight he wouldve gotten in trouble just like Stephanie said she wouldve !! Thats truly disgusting ...
