I miss my old uro so bad. She had me on a great protocol and I was well for a year. Now she has retired and I got stuck with a new doc who is younger than me and quite conservative in her approach.

After 2 weeks of pain, I finally got in to see her and she said I didn't have an infection but would send it off for culture. That was on a Thursday. In the meantime she gave me steriods to help with the inflammation and pain killers.

Then, her nurse called me Monday night and told me that I did have an infection after all (no really?!) They called in 7 days of Ampacillin. I've never taken this for a UTI.

I realize that I am also having a flare, but my flares only last 2 - 5 days and are gone. I get bladder and UTIs very easily when I have flares. Then it just starts a visious circle of bladder inflammation and infection until I get the infection knocked out.

My old uro had to put me on a month of Cipro to knock out a terrible infection, then she had me on 1 Macrodantin after sex along with 1/2 of a Cipro at night. I did that for a few months and didn't have another bladder/uti until now.

I don't want to live on antibiotics, but I am so frustrated.

Does anyone out there take a small dose of antibiotics to keep the UTIs away?

Right now I am living on Hydrocodone. I can't keep doing that. I am so frustrated.

If a culture and sensitivity test was done, the antibiotic ordered should be the right one for the particular "bug" you have.

My doctor prescribed a low dose anti for me. I take it before or after sex and and at the first sign of a flare. I also take it if I have a "less than neat" BM, just in case...Nitrofurantoin Macro 50mg capsules (substituted for Macrodantin 50mg capsules. I do not take these often, just as prescribed.

I am going to see if I can get back on my 100mg of Macrodantin after sex and swimming. For some reason, I tend to get these infections more during the summer months.

Hopefully, I can kick the current bladder infection I have. Usually by the time I feel pain, the infection is so bad.
