I went to a festival the other day. It was me, my bf, her mom, and another bf. Well, we some how got on the topic of pain meds. I mentioned casually that I take Darvon when I have extreme pain. She said something to the affect of it being something you can get addicted to and gave me a funny look. I looked at her and told her I got my script filled in March, and I still havent gone thru 30 pills.
I know many of you get these comments from your family and friends all the time. It just sucks! Its like they think lesser of you because you have to take a strong pain med. In a way, Im thankful my mom has fibro because she totally understands. And Darvon is like one of the weakest pain meds out there! It just bothered me. Thanks for letting me vent

it always seems like the people who make comments about pain meds have know personal knowledge of pain meds. Otherwise they would not make the comments. If they knew darvon then they would know it is the " Weakest" pain med. I took darvocet for a long time just two everynight so I know about how strong darvocet is not very. I guess we all get to a point where we kinda blow off comments like that. For me my friends are all RN's and recovery room RN's that are used to administerting big doses of narcotics so they don't even ask me about my pain meds at all. I don't tell them only like two of my closet friends. It is private to me. I do tell people I go to the pain clinic . I am not ashamed of that. I think my former co workers know that I am going to the pain clinic they don't ask me one question...... they know this is why I can't work. Vicky

People who never experienced serious pain , have no idea and when someone has chronic pain its a whole other ball game !! When I was younger I never would have imagined having to take pain meds , let alone taking them most of the time :loco: When someone makes those kind of comments , I just ignore them , it still frustrating , but you shouldnt have to defend yourself or your health decisions to anyone . Im sorry your friend doesnt understand , but thats why this site is great , cause we get it :)

I just don't tell anyone who doesn't live in my house what I am taking. I used to be open about it, but I have one relative who would ask me for my pain meds --- that's when I stopped sharing the information.

I don't talk about what I take with anyone but Hubby and all of you. He and you understand. :)

I have to agree with the other responses - even though I'm not taking pain meds - I had a family member give me a horrible lecture about the valium I take - I since decided that my meds are between my doctor & my husband - period.
The average person - does not understand that these meds are not always overused or abused - and that when we have CHRONIC illnesses - it has to be managed - how that management is handled is between the patient and the doctor -
Good luck - and please try not to take it personally - most of the times our families mean well - they just don't understand.
