I believe somewhere on this site there is an entire page dedicated to applying for SSDI.
First, you must call your local SS office and obtain the application, fill it out in as much detail as possible, include any doctor's statements, ANY piece of paper that says you are unable to work.
You send that in, and are required to see the SS's doctor, who does a 5 minute exam on you, and in my case said I was in perfect health.....how he knew that, I'll never know, because I was VERY sick at that time. Then you'll be required to see a psychiatrist, who will ask you stupid questions such as "I'm going to say 4 words, at some point in this conversation I am going to ask you to repeat them"...I still know mine, cat, dog, house, car........So, I guess that meant I was sane? Also he asked me demeaning questions, leading up to the fact that I was simply depressed and not sick at all.
I was denied the first time.
I did the same thing again, this time with more records, more complete statements from doctors stating my disability.........denied.
Got a great attorney, he did all the work for me, gathered all the papers needed, found things for me that I'd never thought of, and when it FINALLY came time to see the judge, I was deemed disabled with fibromyalgia, cfs, crohns disease, hypothyroidism, etc......at that point I didnt have IC.
I would try it yourself once. If you are denied, then go on and get an atty. They take their pay out of the back pay the government owes you and belive me, its well worth it. What you dont see you dont miss, meaning, you wont see their cut of your money, so you really dont miss it, and they are limited by the government as to how much they can charge, and my lawyer even gave me 500.00 back!
It can be done, its a long, hard, complicated road, but you can do it! Please feel free to email me at hirisqrn@bellsouth.net or pm me here on the board and I'll help you out. I am very familiar with the system now.
Also, plan, plan, and plan some more for living on a very small amount of cash after you get your back pay money. Save money now, or save money from your back pay so that you can live on it for some time, because I worked most of my life, since age 16, and though I got a decent amount of back pay, I now get 702 dollars a month!!! I have to add my children on, soon, because they are entitled to pay as well for me to support them.
I hope this clears up a bit for you, but like I said, I'm always available for help if you need it.
Hugs, and good luck, Sandy
