When I get a flare my main problem is sever inflammation in my bladder which causes terrible pain. My doctor said that it is just part of the disease.

Does anyone take anything for the inflammation like Aleve or Advil? I was afraid of causing more pain to my bladder, but sometimes I need something to take down the inflammation.

Ibuprofen is a problem for many ICers. I can't take any of them for more than one dose.

My pain managementdr has me taking Dolobid 500mg 2 x day. He told me it is an "ic friendly" anti inflammatory. He is an IC specialist and understood my concern over it irritating me. I take it without problems. Maybe you could research it and ask your dr to try that. I think inflammation is a lot of my pain.

One med that helps reduce my pain is tramdol or also known as ultram or ultracet. It is non-narcotic. Another med recently give to me is called vicuprofen. I don't think it helps me much, but it may help others.

I'm one w/ IC who can take ibuprofen and alleve w/out problems. I usually use them only for menstrual pain or muscle pains not related to my IC, and when I had really bad Vulvar Vestibulitis inflammation, both worked wonders.

I have gotten relief from very minor IC pain and burning with regular Tylenol, at times, if I didn't have my regular meds with me. But for inflammation ibuprofen and alleve have always worked best for me...bladder-wise I don't know, but for other inflammations, yes.

Also pyridium, sold OTC as Uristat and Azo Standard, gives me a lot of relief when either my VV is acting up or my bladder is burning and feeling inflamed.
And like Elamar mentioned there is prescription Ultram (tramadol) and Ultracet (tramadol plus tylenol), though I'm not familiar if they have good anti-inflammatory properties? I used Ultracet at one time for severe sinus headaches...made me very very dizzy.

I have taken a prescribed anti-inflammatory for inflamed muscles after an accident, Mobic I belive is the name?, but I don't know if it's useful for bladder inflammation. Haven't seen it mentioned on the boards before.

The only way to know if advil or alleve will help or cause additional problems is to try a dose or two, best on a full stomach. It doesn't cause problems for all IC patients, but since it is often reported that it does, some people just avoid it completely and so they will never know if it could be helpful, when it very well may be!
best wishes, hope you find what works for you soon,:)

I take aleve everynight. Dolobid I remember giving that drug to patient when I first graduated nursing school. I will have to look it up. It's been around a while Vicky
