Hi, I was diagnosed with IC in September, and insurance denied based on preexisting condition. I need help with my bills, or reference to someone who can explain to me about insurance laws. I am in process of filing appeals with insurance company. Is "existing condition" when symptoms begin, or when diagnosed? I have never heard of this condition before diagnosia. Any response will be appreaciated. Crossfox

If you have a history of seeing physicians for bladder problems, the insurance company may try to use that as a basis for denial.
Usually about the only way to get coverage for a pre-existing condition is through a group insurance plan or managed care.

Did you have insurance prior to being diagnosed with IC? Insurance companies can use the pre-existing condition when you have a period of time without insurance. If this is not the case you can appeal with your state's insurance regulatory office or attorney general's office. Call them and ask them what to do. If you're not working now, you'll probably qualify for a state medicaid fund that would pay your doctors bills if your doctor will say that you can't work for a year or so. It doesn't have anything to do with social security or income level...in most states. I hope you can get this straightened out. Keep fighting, a lot of times the company will back down.

Hi,
I administrate insurance at work. Have you changed jobs in the last year? If you have, then the insurance company usually has a long questionaire that you complete when you were eligible for insurance at the new job(usually anywhere from 30-90 day after hire). When they get this, they will send a letter saying basically that if you were being treated for this(or anyting that would be considered chronic) under your old job's plan, it will fall under a preexisting condition category. However, they will usually pay on that condition within 3-12 months and the letter would tell you that. Ask your HR person at work to explain the pre-existing clause for insurance for you and how long it will be before it covers this.
I hope this made sense and helped some. Let me know if you have other questions.
