calcium tablets

I got my bone density test back. I have the beginning signs of osteperosis. It has been told by my Uro. not to take calcium tab. Has anyone else heard this also?

I've never heard it. In fact Prelief is mostly calcium glycerophosphate and is supposedly the best form of calcium for your bones. I know lots of people on this board take it to remove acid from food and drinks and protect their bladders. I wouldn't be without it!

Maybe you could talk to your doc about Prelief. In the meantime, there is a thread on this site that talks all about Prelief, acid, calcium and bones, very informative.

I stay away from calcium tablets because they constipate me, which can cause IC to flare for some people (especially if you strain during a bowel movement). I wonder if that's why your uro suggested you avoid them.

Personally, I was diagnosed with osteopenia (the early stages of osteoporosis) and I cannot take HRT because of my lupus. So I drink lots of milk and try to eat other foods that are high in calcium, and I try to do weight training and other exercises to keep my bones from deteriorating any more.

I take tums for calcium, maybe you could talk with your doctor about that. I take prelief also but thats mostly if I eat something that could bother me.

Hi There, I've had severe osteoporosis for years now and have been taking Calcium Magnesium with Vitamin D Supplement daily. I was put on Fosomax and it seemed to help increase the bone mass a bit, but then all the controversy came out about the drug and I made a decision to stop it. I might change my mind after my next Bone Scan however.

Well I haven't heard from my doc. I did get a letter from the facility that did the bone density and they stated that it is O.K. for now. They will want to repeat in an year. Thank you for all your help and advise.

On the advice of my physician, I take Tums for calcium.

I'm only 44 and haven't had a bone density test done yet but I need one as I am shrinking. I can tell when I stand next to Tom and when I reach for things in cabinets that I used to be able to get but now can't reach. Tom hasn't gotten taller so I know I must be getting shorter. I have spinal problems anyway, I have mild scoliosis and degenerative disc disease. I take Os-Cal 2x a day. It has vit D in it so that the calcium is absorbed better. So far so good with it. I figured menopause is coming and I want to be prepared for it and keep the shrinking to a minimum!

I have had 2 bone density tests since I am on the depo shot and it can cause problems with your bones. I have been 5'2" for all of my life. Now I am almost 43and both of my last bone tests showed me being 5'3"! I was like shouldn't I be starting to shrink by now? The tech even mentioned that my bones were as healthy as those of someone in their 20s. I said great...I have a bladder that should belong to someone in their 80s.

I take a supplement that has calcium, magnesium and zinc in it every day. I have always hate milk and most milk products except for ice cream of course!

I was dx with Osteopenia about 6 years after noticing that I was losing inches (my pants instead of going just past my ankles-were covering my feet!) so the doctor order a bone density test (I have one every other year)
I now take Fortical - which is a nose stray that you use everyday and also calcuim tabs with Vit D.

I have to take Actonel once a week for mine. I was high risk for hip fractures, etc and the Actonel has improved my bone dentisty test the last 3 years.

Calcium Carbonate can cause constipation, Calcium Citrate does not. Of course, calcium carbonate is less expensive, but it is not absobed by the body as well as calcium citrate.
