One more thing Re: prosed.. Does it stay in your systom a while or take some time to work.. I have noticed that I'll take it not thinking it worked but then for a day or two I seem to be better then I was. I took it saturday when I had the flare up didn;t feel any different however by Sunday I was feeling better, My urine stayed blue for a few days and now almost back to normal color and my symtoms are back not horrific but very bothersome. Should I stay on the prosed even if I am having a good day?? I am just very confused not knowing if its really working or not..

Thanks Kristina

How is your doctor prescribing it? I am on it continuously. When I first started last August, I was taking it 4 times a day. It is for long term use unlike Pyridium Plus. Now that it is working well, I am down to taking it just twice a day. Also I didn't notice the full benefits of it (no spasms or retention or that lovely pain after I emptied if I waited a little too long) after about 2 weeks. I did notice a difference after a few days, but after the first 2 weeks, it was a huge difference. Again meds are different for all of us, but that is how it works for me.

Good luck!

I'm confused too because the blue stays in my system for a long time. Does the relief come after the first few hours (it didn't for me) or during the "blue phase" - up to several days later. I can't tell what is going on because I am coping with an infection and I have to travel and I would like to take some valium and so I am too nervous to mix an antibiotic, valium and prosed and maybe tylenol. So I will not take prosed now. Maybe later. Wish me luck.

Hi. I never tried the prosed ds daily until 3 days ago. I started with one a day to see how it helps. I had a urodynamics test done quite some time ago and they gave me the prosed ds, I noticed with that, by the next day it worked some. My urine will stay blue for a few days after, usually the blue I don't even see until the next day. My doctor prescribed it prn, so I would ask your doctor how they want you to take it. I didn't ask my doctor if I could take it every day, I am sure he would say thats fine if I asked. But all doctors are different. :) Lisa

My prescription allows me to take it 4 times a day if I need to. I usually can get away with 2 a day, and if my pain increases for some reason (usually because of something I ate) I increase the dosage. However, the higher dosage doesn't kick in for a day or so, so there is some lag time after you take it.

I thought I was going crazy! I am so glad to hear that the med takes time to work. Is it true that your urine is blue means that the med is working? My doctor told me, your urine will be blue which is a good thing becuase it means that the med is working and doind it's job!

I hope it works for you! Just to let you know that just because it is turning your urine blue doesn't mean it is working. Just the the Pyridium turned my urine orange, but believe me, it didn't work for me. That you can tell by if your symptoms are getting better.

I think it would be interesting to know what component of prosed is helping - it has an aspirin like chemical (so are we taking an NSAID which is not good for bladders I have heard and can cause bleeding), it has an anti-infective and it has an anti-spasmotic. Why is it blue.?Does the blue conincide with the better effects? (By the way it did not by any means ameliorate a true UTI in me). I'm not sure what goes with the prosed (a little valium at night?). What are people taking with it? PV

I have the ingredients in Prosed ds that is right from the website.

Methenamine- Bactericidal action
Phenyl Salicylate- a mild analgesic for pain
Methylene blue- possesses weak antiseptic properties
Benzoic acid- has a mild antibacterial and antifungal acion, it also helps maintain an acid pH in urine necessary for degradation of methenamine
Hysycomine sulfate- parasympatholytic drug which relaxes smooth muscle.

The website that makes this drug has the safety pamphlet online. That website is posted below if anyone wants to read about it. :)

I wish I could answer your questions pv, but all I know is that it is working for me. I have been on so many different meds and herbal treatments to count and I am very happy to finally have something that I can count on. I even did an experiment over the long weekend and didn't take any Prosed by Saturday, I could already feel a little twinge when I was almost finished emptying my bladder (anyone know what I mean when I say I squeeze my hands together just so I won't need to holler out...that's what point I got to after a couple days off Prosed, plus I felt the urge to go a little more often, so I went back on it. Last night I was back to emptying my bladder without even thinking about it.

I have used Fish Oil for several years for my bladder and for my hair (since I lost most of my hair due to Elmiron and stress from dealing with symptoms that couldn't be controled by meds). I have also added Flaxseed oil, which is also good for healing.

I just started with one a day for now. I know I cannot take pyridium, it makes me sick to my stomach and it never worked for me at all. I want to give the prosed ds a few weeks but I know when I had the urodynamics test, I left the office in pain and spasms and it did help some the next day. I liked it so much better then pyridium. But yes we are all different. :)
