Has anyone who has had a Hysterectomy that left their ovary/ovaries needed to later have it/them removed? I ask because I had a hysterectomy in September. I went it to have just the uterus (prolapsed and enlarged) removed, but because of the Endo, my ovaries had adhesions and when they took the uterus my ovary came with it being that it was stuck to it. there was to much bleeding to the ovary that they decided to take that ovary an the tube also, leaving the one hoping it would keep me from starting menopause..which didnt work. well, i have cysts on the other ovary and I have ALOT of pain. sex is seriosuly disrupted because of the pain. sooo...I was wondering if anyone else has had to go back to have the ovary removed. what re the odds of my doctor doing this? I dont see the point in going on with pain when the ovary isnt helping anyway.

I had everything taken out with my hysterectomy in April including my ovaries so I can't speak from personal experience. I do remember someone saying that they wanted their ovaries taken out all at the same time because they had heard too many stories of people having to go back and have the ovaries removed anyway. I hope someone who had a similar situation to you will chime in. I had no problems with everything coming out at the same time. I've been on HRT since the first night in the hospital and haven't had any menopause symptoms.

I had my Hysterectomy when I was about 24. They left my ovaries in, because I was so young. I had my ovaries out when I was 37, because I was getting cyst on them and they hurt. We thought the pain was from my ovaries, but that was before I was dxed with IC. Now I do believe my pain was from the IC. I did have one ovary wrapped in scar tissue, but I never got better after they took them out. Six months later I had a mass grow where my ovaries were and they went back in and cut that out. That time they cut me all the way from my belly button to the bottom of my pelvic. It was a tuff surgery to heal from. My doctor told me he finally fixed me, but I still had the pain. That when he finally sent me to an uro, and they dxed IC. I take compound hormones, so I don't go into menopause too early. Health wise, if you have not gone through menopause it is better to keep your ovaries, if you have no problems with them. Even though I ended up having mine out, I am glad I did not do it at 24.

I still have one ovary. The other one was removed a year after my hyst due to massive adhesions.

I had my left ovary and uterus out in 2005. My doc recommended that I take both ovaries but I asked him to save at least one if at all possible. He said that he has only had one lady in all his years of practice who kept one ovary and he never had to go back and remove it. Well, I made it six months and was in bad pain. It had a huge cyst so he went in and removed it. That was Feb. of 2006.
In Feb. of this year I went to the doc thinking I had the flu. He thought I had kidney stones so he sent me for a CT scan. I had an ovarian remnant that had grown a cyst. It was blocking the left ureter and my kidney was not draining. So, I had to have ANOTHER major abdominal surgery to remove the remnant and cyst. My case is not typical, of course, but this was my experience. I will say when I had one ovary I had the ups, downs, bloating, PMS, etc. just like when I had both ovaries. I just did not get a period because my uterus was gone. I still felt like I was cycling though. The nice part about being on hormones is that every day is pretty much the same.
You should try researching on hystersisters forum. I have spent a lot of time on there while trying to regulate my hormones. Unfortunately, that has been a bit of a battle for me. Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.

Regards,
Vicki

Hi Vicki, You said you syill had PMS symptoms. did you still get the tender..full filling breasts? because that is one thing I STILL have but I didnt know if it is a "menopause" symptom or a "PMS" symptom. I know my doctor told me that I basicly am going through menopause because I had next to NO hormones, my levels were so low. I have had terrible pains in my right lower abdomen which is the ovary she left. but I get bad bladder pain lately too, so its hard to say if its just a reflection of the bladder pain or the ovary, but I do know that when I had my CT Scat a few months ago I had a cyst. soo, I'm assuming its gonna have to come out. I think my medical bills are never going away, lol.

Thank you for posting...EVERYONE. I appreciate all the advice and personal experiences. you have helped alot!!

Hi, do you they give you anything to help with the menopause? I have a friend that has her ovaries and she needed a low dose hormone to help her. She was having alot of symptoms. I had everything taken out in Feb 08, my gyn recomended everything so I wouldn't have to go back later and have my ovaries removed. She did say that happens alot and for that reason I wanted them to take everything. I am on vivelle dot patch for hormone replacement and I have had no menopause symptoms since my surgery at all. I did ask for vivelle dot because I heard it was ok for IC and didn't want to try pills and have them hurt my bladder. My friend that has her ovaries is also on vivelle dot but half the dose that I am since she has her ovaries. Now I had really bad ovulation pain to every month and when I got my report in the mail from surgery, I had a cyst on both ovaries, as well as adenomyosis, so I was very glad they took everything, I had alot of pain from my periods. It made me feel alot better as far as energy and pain wise, I don't have to go through that every month anymore. Even my mood was better after surgery. Good luck to you. :) Lisa

Hi Vicki,

Your story sounds like mine. Six months after I had my ovaries removed, I had to back and have ANOTHER major abdominal surgery. I had grown a mass where my ovaries where, but it did not have ovarian remnant in the mass. It was really strange and no one had an explanation for it. They did not found the IC until after the second abdominal surgery.

I would say the breast thing is PMS. In my experience, menopause symptoms do not include breast tenderness. It could be your ovary is stuck to your bladder with endo. I had that on my left ovary. Then my right ovary was stuck to my intestines on my second surgery so they had to remove a section of my intestines and sew the two ends back together. That was really special! At least I lost about twenty pounds from that little surgery. Unfortunately, I have gained some of it back. I did enjoy being thin for a time:smile tee

I had years & years of painful, heavy periods. In 1999 I had a hyst.and was determined to keep both the ovaries. Big Mistake! I was better for about 9mths when the menopause started. I also began to have all the original symptoms but it was worse. I was miserable all the time and felt mentally unstable with the hormones going crazy. In 2001 I was diagnosed through a vaginal ultrasound with a cystic tumor on the left and some small cysts on the right. My second surgery was scheduled and they took it all this time. I wish I had listened to my doctor and had it all removed the first time.
Menopause when I had my ovaries....I had major night sweats every night and was an emotional wreck. After the ovaries were removed I started on Vivelle patch then switched to Estradiol tablet. I am now weaning off that and will be trying to do Estrace cream only. I never had breast pain with menoupause but had it all the time when I had PMS. I don't miss the PMS & period stuff one bit:woohoo: However, I developed IC & pelvic floor issues in the end . If I could do it all over..I would still get the hyst. but just all at one time. I also recommend Hystersister website.
Best of luck and I hope you are feeling better soon!

I had on ovary removed because a cyst burst. A few years later I had a hysterectomy because of a prolapsed uterus and they left the remaining ovary because I was 42 at the time.
