Hi, Everyone, i missed talking to you, i have been confused for a few days now, i went to another uro & thank God i found him more understanding , he ordered some tests & after excluding having more stones, since i have continous flank pain, he told me he has to do hydrodestention under anasthesia ,take a biobsy from the bladder & do another test to see if i have urine reflux causing my kidney pain, but he have some doubts about my ic, first is it possible to go to zreo stage again after being diagnosed by 2 doctors before & taking elmiron for nearly 3 years now....

i feel a little afraid from the hydrodestention since i have read that a lot of people took at least 2 painful weeks to recover from it... any suggestions here

Hi, I had a few hydro distentions. I think the main problem for me after was frequency, so they gave me pyridium after and also a pain med, that seemed to keep things under control for me. But we are all different. I did have some pain, but it wasn't anything that was unbearable. It took about 3 weeks after my last one for my bladder to settle down. Good luck and I hope they can figure out whats causing your pain.

Hi,
I have had one hydrodistention and my pain was much worse after I had gotten it. It took me a few weeks to get over the excruciating pain. It has helped some people, and you will not know if you don't try. Because I am a IC patient, I know we are willing to do anything to try to get over this agony we are living in. Good luck in your decision.

ICNDonna, as well as many others I am sure, have had great sucess with hydrodistentions. Not only as a diagnostic test but aslo as an aid in reducing symptoms. Others have not had good experiences while some have not noticed any change for better or worse. After any invasive procedure like that it is normal to experience some degree of discomfort/pain. The goal is to make that as minimal and as short lived as possible.
I myself have not had any. Hopefully you will get more responses soon..I am sure Donna will be along any minute to tell you about her positive experiences with hydros. In the mean time you can go to the top of the page and click on "search" in the blue banner and search using the terms hydro or hydrodistention. You will get hundreds of peoples personal experiences with them this way. Good luck

I was back to my previous level of IC about 3 days after the cysto/hydro, BUT I did not have a bladder biopsy. That might make the recovery time longer. Something to ask your doctor about....

I hope that you get some answers & are feeling better soon---

The best advice I can give is go with what you feel is the right thing to do.
Everyone will give you different advice. Some it works for, some it makes worse, some there is no change. We are all so different and at different stages with the disease that it is so hard to compare what one person tells you to another.
I wish you the best in your decision!

I have read that something like 50% of IC patients benefit from hydrodistention. I feel fortunate to be in that group. I am scheduled for hydro #42 on May 29th.

I am even thinking I want another one. My last one was in 2002. It may give me even more relief then the meds now. I still have alot of frequency so I think I would benefit from it. :)

I have had 2 hydrodistentions and require them on a regular basis. I have found that they not only stretch the urethra and the bladder, but they help to clean out all the cysts and other "guck" that's in there. They put me under full anaesthetic, it takes her about 1 hour to do the procedure and I'm out of there about 2 hours after I wake up. I have a bit of discomfort and bloody discharge for a day or two, but after that I feel sooo much better!!!!
Wish there wasn't such a long wait right now, cause I needed one yesterday, but they're backlogged at the Day Surgery section of the hospital right now. Besides, they want me to be checked for Laytex allergy, a good idea for all, as the catheters, etc. can have a very bad reaction in some people. I had a kidney infection where I had such a bad rash, either from the catheter or just poor nursing. The TLC that I learned as a nurse just doesn't seem to exist in this day and age. At least I'll finally know for sure and will be able to get my hydrodistentions done soon.
