I know this has been discussed in other threads and that there is also a lecture with Dr. Brokoff about the uses of valium and IC, I can't find the lecture so if anyone has the link that would be awesome. I spoke to my dr about using valium suppositories or valium tablets. He said he has no problem rx'ing but has never done it. I told him I have read a lot of info about vaginal Valium online. He said to print it and bring it with me to my appt. tomorrow and we will work something out. In the meantime he called in 10mg Valium to take orally, which isn't making any difference. I am wanting this now b/c I just finished my Clomid and am due to ovulate this week. We have been advised to have sex every other night to increase the odds of pregnancy. As many IC'ers know that can be an impossible feat in its own, to have sex that often. I have pretty bad PFD and sex is very painful. So with me getting ready to ovulate, I would like to decrease the pain from sex. I thought about the Valium suppositories but after really thinking about it I can't do that. My ins will not cover them and I am not in the situation to pay out of pocket for another medication that doesn't work. I know there is a thread from Jill with rx'ing guidlines for the suppositories..So here is what I am asking for.... :smile tee
I know a lot of people use oral Valium, crush it, mix it with KY or something similar and insert it vaginally. I think this is what I want to try b/c my insurance covers it. If you use this method...
A)What dose of Valium do you use? I think I read that Dr. Brokoff suggests higher doses of Valium when used vaginally versus orally.
B)What do you mix it with
C)Any tips on insertion, does a syringe help?
D)How long does it take to dissolve to where I can do the deed and not have it spilling out of me
E)How long before intercourse should I use it, I assume if I don't allow enough time between insertion and intercourse it will just be pushed out of me and wasted (okay D and E were basically the same question)
F)Should I ask for a few extra pills than 1 per day until I get the hang of it. I am only using this to help with trying to conceive. Unless it makes a big difference in pain and then I will see about using it more often.
Thank you for answering my questions so I can take this to my dr. I need this info by 1pm EST tomorrow. Again, if anyone can provide me the link of Dr. Brokoff's lecture on this subject, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

Doctor Brookoff lectures on pain control:

You can do a search on Valium Used Vaginally to find many posts about this. There might be some that will answer some of your questions.

I usually used the broken up 10 mg tablet afterwards. I also always take a Lortab and drink a full glass of water before and another glass after, but that may just be habit now! I guess you can insert the broken up valium about a half hour before "the deed", but they was never convenient for me. Now that I can get B&O supp again, they really do the trick when sex is painful. I normally have just cramping now since my Prosed DS has managed to stop my urethral spasms most of the time. I used to insert the crushed up valium with a syringe and lidocaine from a tube. Now I have gotten some empty capsules and crushed up the tablet (powder like) and put it in the capsule to insert. I only did that a few times because once my b&O's came in, they worked better.
Maybe your doctor can prescribe those. I don't know how they are for people trying to get pregnant though. They do come in a generic and most pharmacys have them or can order them within 2 to 3 days. Target has already started getting mine in advance like they do for my Prosed DS.
I hope you find something to help you.

Oh this isn't the first try. We have been activly trying since Sept. and before that not trying but not trying not to get pregnant. This is the first month I have used anything like Clomid. My dr just thinks the Endo has my cycles so messed up we aren't getting the timing right. Just think, there are 720 hours in a 30 day month. If you ovulate normally, once per month, you are only able to get pregnant 12-36 hours out of the month. That is what my dr says anyway, that you must have sex within 12-36 hours before or after ovulation. That is insane to try to time that just right when your cycles are outta wack.
I just wish someone would have told me I have PFD. Maybe it could have been treated and somewhat under control so trying to get pregnant wouldn't be so difficult. Oh well, it is what it is and I can't change it so I guess you just have to roll with the punches. I don't think I will use Clomid again though. Those first few days were rough. Just when I got used to it, I was done with it. It made my IC better for those few days so that was a nice little break. I felt better than I did in a while, other than being so nauseaus(SP) and the horrible headache. That is why I am going to get a hormone panel ran on me once this Clomid is out of my system. IC wise I felt great. The best I have felt since this hell started a few years ago and it has been everyday nonstop ever since. Until the Clomid. It is awful that it made me sick to my stomach and gave me the headache or I would have had 5 days where I felt like a normal healthy person does. I felt so good, after a few excedrin migraine tablets and my tummy settled, that my husband had to force me to go to bed. I took him out of town for his bday. We left Thursday around 11pm and came home Sat afternoon. Didnt do anything special, just got away. Those 2 nights it was 6am before I went to sleep. I was so happy to feel good I was terrified that when I went to sleep and woke up it would be over. Once I finished the Clomid it was. We drove for 2 hrs to the first hotel then 2.5 to the next then almost 3 hours home and I only peed 1 time and that was on the way home and nt really b/c I had to but b/c we were at the gas station feeling up. Wow really got off subject there. Thanks to anyone who took the time to read it.

Sharon and Tracy.... As always, thank you for your suggestions. You both are always so helpful.***Extra thanks for the link***
Claire, thank you for your kind words and wishing me luck.
I thought, given the amount of replies to similar threads, I would have got a much larger response. Oh well, I will just read through all of the other peoples threads and see if I can find the answers I am looking for.
My dr said his daughter is doing an internship at the compounding pharmacy here. He gave me an rx for Valium supositories and wants me to drop it off directly to her to fill and she will give them to me at cost instead of having to pay the mark up. I thought that was very kind of him. She doesn't have to work again until Monday. In the mean time he gave me an rx for 12 of the B&O's , not sure if it is 15 or 16, whichever one is 60mg of Opium. He said if they work then he will continue to rx them to me. I am going to call my ins. co tomorrow to see if they cover them and if not then I will have to decide if it is worth paying out of pocket, they are much more than the Valium. I think she told me 106.00 for 12 B&O's. Only 1 pharmacy carries them here and it is the hospital pharmacy. I am going to try the crushed Valium and KY method tonight and see how it works. He Said I can take 1 orally and do the other one vaginally if I want. He knows I have a high tolerence to meds.

Most insurance companies pay for them, so hopefully yours will. My doctors has prescribed up to 120 B&O supp for a month prescription back when I was using them 4 times a day. Since they have a generic form, I only had to pay $5.00 for the total. The non-generic ones are quite expensive. Back when I was getting 120, the pharmacist made a mistake and ordered the non-generic. When the lady handed me the box and said it would be almost $500.00 I told her she would have to send those back because I definitely wasn't paying that amount for a prescription I could normally get for $5.00! She said that my doctor didn't mark generic. I made her pull the prescription and my doctor certainly did. Last month my doctor prescribed 60. I don't used them everyday anymore, but my doctor knows I don't want to take a chance on them going back off the market so he is making sure I have some on hand in case I have any problems.

Did your doc mention using OPK's at all, I know there are quite a few women who use them while they are taking Clomid etc. ;) I know they are fabulous in helping you figure out when you are about to ovulate. And since for us ICer's sex can be a dicey prospect, any bit of help knowing "when" it's about to happen can be a bonus so preparations can be made!! ;) Good luck!

I had an ultrasound that told me that I was ovulating on Wed. One follicle had already burst, to release the egg, and the other 2 were very big indicating they were about to rupture as well. My luck I'll end up with triplets or twins. We have 13 sets on my moms side and 4 on my dads, of twins that is not triplets. Oh well, atleast then I'd be done.

I don't have VV or Vulvodina(SP) but I do have bad PFD and IC so applying the meds directly where the problem is helps a lot. When you swallow a pill not all of the drug goes to the specific area you want/need it.
The other night I did the crushed Valium with KY and it kinda helped. It was only 5mg though, maybe I just need something stronger.
