2. Blaming Baxter, China denies heparin guilt
Comment | Forward to a friend

Point fingers at us, we'll point back at you. That's what China appears to be saying about the heparin scandal, claiming that it wasn't the "heparin-like substance" found in batches of the blood thinner that caused hundreds of severe reactions and up to 81 deaths.

Chinese officials are also blaming Baxter, which recalled millions of doses and stopped heparin production; they say the drugmaker won't cooperate with their investigation. The company destroyed some drug samples and production records that China considered important to their probe, one official said. A company spokeswoman denied the allegation, saying Baxter has cooperated "with all parties."

Admittedly, the FDA says it can't prove that the oversulfated chondroitin found in the offending batches actually caused the reactions. But China can't prove its theory that the culprit was actually introduced in the U.S., rather than overseas. Nor will China say where the heparin-like substance came from or how it got into the blood thinner. Until proof is on the table, the blame game will likely continue.

I might believe it if it hadn't been for the pet foods causing problems and the other instances of poor quality products imported from China. I just don't buy them any more if I can identify them.

I with you Donna, given all the examples of poor quality and poison products from China it seems they are the most likely culprit in the heparin tainting. The poison dog food ingredient was pretty darn bad but lets not forget "glycol" in toothpaste and some kids toy (forget the name) that if licked or swallowed turned into I think it was Rophynol? (date rape drug).

Why any drug company would risk buying even raw ingredients from China is beyond me. I hope the lawsuits cost them far more than the profit they make.

I have also been avoiding products made in China for at least two years now because I'm tired of buying cheap junk that does not last and figure there is no savings if I have to buy it over and over. I often just skip the purchase if I don't absolutely have to have it and I cannot find the item made somewhere other than China.

Someguy, the toy you are thinking of was Aqua Dots. I had got my daughter, 4 years at the time 5 now, a set of the Aqua Dots for doing so well at the dentist. We made so many of the little things, we put magnents on the backs for the fridge, and gave them to my BF Brandi for a housewarming gift. At the time she had just bought a new home in NC and, get this, had a 5 month old baby crawling all over the place. I panicked when I couldn't get a hold of her and called 422, got her work number, and called her at work. If her baby Addisyn would have gotten ahold of one of those I would have died. Horrible, just plain horrible what China has exposed us, and other countries, to. All just to save a buck on good materials.
