I have been put on Trazodone for sleep. I have an irregular heart beat sometimes, generally stress related. I am going through anxieties right now, and my heart tends to beat a bit faster, and skips a few beats on Trazodone. I am not sure if the med is aggravating this or not.
Just wanted to know what others experience on this med has been like. I'm wondering if the first nightmare I had in many years was caused by this med. also.
Thanks for the advice.

You may already know this, but I just found a list of side effects of this med. I think it would be a good idea to tell your doctor about the nightmares. Here is what I found:
Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: fainting, shaking (tremors), nightmares, ringing in the ears, problems urinating, blood in urine.
Tell your doctor immediately if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur: slow/fast/irregular heartbeat, signs of infection (e.g., fever, persistent sore throat), seizures, shortness of breath, stomach/abdominal pain, black stools, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, easy bruising/bleeding.

Some sites say to let your doctor know immediately, others say special monitoring it needed with these side effects.
My doctor is aware of these problems with me.
I was just curious of what others have experienced with Trazodone.

so many of those antidepressents I have tried and read all about. Yes I would say the nightmares. You need to call your md asap about the desryel same thing causing your heart to skip beats..... this may mean a different med for you at night time. You can't having skipped heart beats it adds to your anxiety and a vicous cycle and then medical reasons. Call MD asap. Vicky

I have cut my dose in half, and I seem to be doing well on the trazadone.
Thanks for the replies.

I may ask about trying it for sleep. I took it years ago. Do you take 25m or 50mg. Does it help you sleep at night? I hope so. Vicky

I can take 25 or 50 mg. Others I believe take higher doses. It relaxes me and helps me sleep, and fall back to sleep. My heart seems to be fine with it.
I was hoping to hear if people had good experiences with trazadone and their bladder.

Trazedone did very well w/ my bladder. I didn't notice any rentention or increased pain, etc. I do remember at first having some dreams, etc but I do think all meds that help w/ sleep do that. One thing that is good is it is an old antidepressant used a lot now for sleep that hardly has any side effects. My dad is a pharmacist and my mother and psychiatrist and both has said of all the things I am having to take that if I needed Trazedone for the rest of my life to sleep, it wouldn't cause any harm. A very safe drug and one of the few that I have felt no changes w/ the bladder. Good luck.

I have been taking 50 mg of trazodone a night since Feb. It has helped me sleep through those painful IC nights, but I have noticed an increase in vivid scary dreams. I have had an increase in carb/sugar cravings and I wonder if this could be trazodone related. I am going to take a break from this med and see if anything changes.

I tried Trazadone for a very short time. It caused bladder flares for me. I'm a lightweight too and take very small doses of everything. Drugs have a tendency to suppress my blood pressure and make me dizzy.
I'd be curious to know, Sharon, now that you've been on it for awhile, is the Trazadone still helping you? Here's hoping!
just curious what this is and how it works.. is it an antidepres.. does it help with nerve pain, or just for sleep.. I am taking imipramine now (tofrinal) and it also cause very very vivid dreams sometimes nightmares also.. sometimes I can't tell the difference if it really happened or if it was a dream.. however I recently started topamax, and I am now sleeping a bit better at night

It is an antidepressant... a very old one but usually the dose they give for sleep is so low it isn't really enough to help w/ the depression. I think it is safe and for me I don't have as bad dreams on it as the "name brand" sleeping pills

I stopped taking trazadone and hydroxyzine last night. Today I Felt Awake and not a never ending carb/sugar craving crazy person like I felt when I was taking trazadone, hydroxyzine, and OBM. But I was in a bit more pain. Weight gain is a big concern for me. I see my uroligist Fri, what should I suggest. I want to feel less pain but do not want to gain weight!

I go to psy md tomorrow for medication consult. I am on no anti-depr. Can't take any of them so far. He mentioned topamax. How are you doing with topamax- does it help the depression? Any side effects? Vicky
Hi Vicky,
i was actually prescribed the Topamax for my migraines.. i was getting like 5 or so a week.. they were aweful.. the imipraine worked for it years ago, but didn't touch them after I had my daughter .. anyway, everyone responds so differently on topamax.. most people lose weight on it.. actually I would say all.. I gained 5.. so weird.. um.. other side effects.. I had like small parts of my hands and feet like just my toe.. or just my heal would fall asleep for like 30 seconds here and there but then would dissappear... the would only last a few weeks and then go away.. and happened every time I went up on a higher does, but again went away till I found the right dosage... I don't think it does anything for depression because it is actually a drug used for epilepsy.. some find it helpful on her for pain as well.. it does help me sleep better at night.. I take 25 mg in the morning and 50 at night.. I started very slow with 25 at night for 3 weeks.. then 25 in the morning and 25 aqt night for 3 more weeks.. now I do 25 min morning and 50 at night.. for another 6 weeks.. might add another 25.. .. you have to drink a ton of water on this med though to avoid kidney stones and the such.. I drink about 8 cups a day.. sometimes 6.. I just sip slowely throughout the day.. or some type of fluid.. but wate is pretty much all I drink.. sorry if I am not helping you much here

I have been taking Trazadone for sleep for a year and a half. When 100 mg. didn't work, he told me to take 200mg. That gave me bad heart palpitations. When I went back to 100mg. I was fine. Now I am down to 25. mg, and I can't seem to get down to nothing. Can't fall asleep without it. Yes, I do have vivid dreams. I am in a lot of pain from urethral throbbing, urgency and frequency and a feeling of arousal. Another thread on this site suggested I read this. http://www.greenjournal.org/cgi/content/abstract/100/5/1089. Too strange. Krisssy
