Elavil vs Trofranil??

My question is...do they work for different people in the same way?? I have tried the Elavil (the lowest dose) & was so out of it. Very sick & way spaced out. Funny, cause I took 100mgs of Pamelor a few years back (for depression when my uncle died). I did fine on that. The docs tried to restart me on 50mgs of it & I was a wreck...in a zone too. Then for my IC, they tried just 10mgs of Pamelor. I wasn't sleepy, but my heart would race like crazy!! Funny how before I could take 100 & now I can't take 10!!
But with Trofranil, how many of you have had success?? I am very sensitive when it comes to meds...I can't take any SSRI's and have even been leary of starting Atarax, cause over the counter allergy meds knock me out. I know that Pamelor, Elavil & Trofranil are all in the same family, but how have they worked for you as far as bladder pain or burning?? Thanks....

Hi there, I take tophrinol, 10mg nightly and have done for about maybe 9 0r 10 months. It works wonderfully for me. Sometimes, i have funny dreams though. But really that is about it. I know that some can't tollerate it. But despite being worried constantly about potential side effects which I don't really get, it is just brilliant, it takes away my frequency and pain.

I just ramped my dose up to 25 mgs, as 12.5 wasn't doing a darn thing for me. I am pretty zonked, as zonked as I was on Elavil. But, the side effects seem to wear off faster, I definitely think docs should be doing Tofranil as first line instead of Elavil. It's so much easier on me.

Some people will go up to 75 or more for pain relief. I'm envious of those who get the relief on 10, that's clearly not me!

The dosages of these drugs as prescribed for IC are very low in comparison to being prescribed for depression. I am on Tofranil, 25 mgs at bedtime and 25 mgs each morning, and have been taking it for 6 years. No weight gain problems for me.

How long can I expect it to take for the Tofrinol (Imipramine) to work. I just started a couple of days ago on 10mg and the Doc said to go up to 30 if necessary. I'm in alot of pain and would really like to hear from others on how long it took to work for you.

I took Tofrinol (Imipramine) for depression. A very high dose and I never gained weight from it.

Hi there. Alot of over the counter allergy meds knock me out to, even if they say non drowsy. But I started with 10mg of atarax for a month and went to 25. I do fine now. I never took tofranil. I take Elavil and started that at 10mg, and then went to 25, I did fine with that to. I have heard that some who cannot take Elavil, tolerate Tofranil better. I hope it works for you. :)

I take tofranil and have not gained weight or am I tired! Elavil I gained 40 pounds in 4 months and was tired all the time..

I was on Elavil for about 4 months and gained 8 lbs and that was eating 1000 calories a day (sometimes less) and working out 2 hours a day. I had to stop as it was too much for me.

I am considering tofranil. I am going to wait for a bit before taking it. I am going to take it for depresssion more so than IC as the Atarax has rendered me pain free.

I only started imipramine 3 days ago, but my bladder felt better the very first night, and it didn't zonk me. Elavil completely wiped me out, and I gained 20 lbs. I can't take SSRIs either, so I'm really hopeful about this. Just lasting 3 nights on it is already a record for an antidepressant, LOL.

After 3 months of Elavil, I started getting very hungry and thought of nothing but food. That was just with 10mg. I switched to Tofranil 10mg from various suggestions here. I have been on it since November without weight gain, but it doesn't help me much with pain or frequency. However, I recently saw a urogyno who told me she wanted me to increase it to 50mg. I started with 20mg last Friday and feel like my urine stream has decreased even when I really feel the need to use the restroom. It seems I have to go at times, but nothing comes out now.
