View Full Version : *whimper* My body is stressed!

Hi Everyone,

Usually, my symptoms are manageable with Elmiron, Reactine, diet & stress management -- I wouldn't say "remission" because I still get flares, but maybe a couple a month instead of every day. I can usually soothe the flare by monitoring water intake, taking a pyridium and taking pain meds. I am very sensitive to diet and hormones. I have a Mirena IUD to try to stop my periods, and have noticed that it helps with my day-to-day frequency.

Well, I've been in what seems to be an ever-growing flare since my laparoscopic surgery in March, which was to remove a 12cm cyst from my ovary and potentially diagnose endometriosis. (Still don't know the status on that; my follow-up appointment is next week. If it is endo, it's very mild.) I had to go off Elmiron for a week before the surgery, and flared on day 2 but was completely fine the other 7 days.

When I woke up after the surgery, I was so doped up that I didn't feel any pain from the surgery, but my bladder was on fire! They ended up giving me such a high dose of opiates that they had to monitor me to make sure I kept breathing, and I still felt pain, but they couldn't give me a higher dose. It was ridiculous. I haven't felt pain that bad since my pre-diagnosis days 6 years ago! Then I ended up with an allergic reaction to something and then had to take a bunch of Benadryl.

When I went to the bathroom for the first time, thinking that might help my bladder, my bladder was full of air! O_O I guess this is from the air they pumped into my body during the surgery -- it chose to go out through my bladder instead of my gut. There was instant relief, as if it had been inflating my bladder.

Anyways, since then, my bladder just hasn't been right. I had to do a colonoscopy last week, and the prep & stress for that seemed to irritate my bladder further.

Now my hormones are all out of whack (presumably from the ovary surgery & other stresses to the body) -- my period was 10 days early and I had the craziest mood swings from it. This has sent me into a flare that seems to get worse each day.

None of my usual treatments will work. :cussing: I've tried combinations of pyridium (which helps but aggravates my digestive issues, which are also flaring), codeine, ibuprofen (which usually helps things but just made things worse), playing with the dose of my antihistamines, meditating, muscle relaxation, drinking more water, drinking less water, xylocaine for my urethral pain, etc. My diet is incredibly bland & IC-friendly already, but I've been even more conservative than usual just in case. Tried drinking baking soda, but that didn't work. UTI tests were negative.

I'm getting a bit desperate here, so if anyone can recommend things for me to try, I'll be very grateful. If this flare doesn't go away within another week or two, I'm going to go back to my uro for rescue instills, but I don't want to do that unless I have to.

Also, I think I just needed to rant to people who understand! :grouphug:

Sorry this was so long!

Feel free to rant all you need. We have big shoulders here. :)

It sounds like your bladder is acting up because of all the things you have been through in such a shot period of time. I am so sorry that you are suffering so much. (((Hugs)))

Have you tried heat pads or cool packs?

I know that the idea of having an instill is less than wonderful, but it could help. I really think it is a good idea to talk with your uro about all of this. Hopefully there is something that the doctor can suggest to get you out of this flare and back to your life. :)

Thanks so much for the hug and support!

I have had series of rescue instills twice before (each series was about 9 instills), and they helped me greatly, so maybe I should look into getting that done again. The idea of having a numb, soothing solution in my bladder is looking more and more appealling! I've been putting it off partly because I think I need a fresh referral to see my uro again (it's been 2 years), and partly because of *insert procrastinating excuses here*.

Ooh, I forgot about using heat or cold. I'll have to give that a go tonight. Thanks for the suggestion!

As an update, I saw my uro this morning and will be starting the rescue instillations again on May 26th.

I didn't realize until I was filling in the self-report questionnaire just how much worse things had gotten, so thanks for suggesting this step! I hope to get back to near-remission soon! :woohoo:

i had a laproscopy...to look for endo...they didnt find any
the anethesia...made me nauseaus....and the hopsital gave me gingerale.

that irrated my baldder...but once it was all out of my system
i was fine..

so i dont think it was the actual lap that caused it.

could be the lack of elmirion..(i dont take it..made my hair fall. out)

i wonder if it could be the colonscopy. do you have to drink some thick nasty looking stuff before hand...
whats in the stuff anyway?...i know OTC laxatives..irrirate me
so maybe thats it

either way...drink baking soda & water...and hold it an at least a hour
while doing crazy yoga moves..to ensure all sides of the bladder are coated

i would even take a baking soda bath when your done

i will pray for you

Thanks, Sharon & TexasHoney! Your well-wishes lift my spirits. :)

amartaingirl: I think you're right and it was because of stopping the Elmiron...I think that just the whole act of getting put under & having something so big removed from my ovary was really stressful for my body, so that would have been a minor flare, but the lack of Elmiron turned it into a massive one. Also, I talked to my gyno this week, and she said they had to catheterize me...and I forgot to tell them before the surgery to use a pediatric catheter if they could. (A lot of my pain is in my urethra.) Ouch!!

The stuff I had to drink for the colonoscopy was magnesium citrate, but I don't think much of it hit my bladder because all liquids went...ahem...another route, for about 24 h. I actually wonder if my bladder got irritated because I was dehydrated...hrm, that's another thought.

Thank you for the baking soda suggestion! I will give that a try tonight. Your prayers are very much appreciated. :)

Incoming *whiiine* post!

Well, I had the rescue instills, and this time they really didn't seem to help much, which is frustrating because they've been my miracle cure in the past. I decided to wait a few weeks to see if they might need time to kick in, and it ended up that I have a UTI...went on Macrobid for 10 days, and it got rid of the urethral pinch after urinating, but not the daily burning. Also been having big problems with urgency and retention, and I swear that burning is just getting worse. Arghhh. When I'm lying down, the urgency/burning is worse when I lay on my right hand side or back. The marked difference between positions worries me, and I don't know how common that is.

I've got an appointment with my uro for July 30th (soon!), so I'm trying to hang in there until then, but this is so incredibly frustrating. I'm starting to get the panicky thoughts about ulcers, surgery scars, worsening IC or misdiagnosis...not helping my stress level, so I'm trying to put those out of my head. I just hope my uro can help!!

Have you tried other anti-spasmodics besides pyridium? Pyridium did nothing for me but turn me pee orange! I find utira-c works well for me when I have that "gotta go" feeling creeping up on me. It is the generic form of urelle and it fairly cheap under my insurance. Alot of people also do well on prosed. There is no generic for it so it costs alot more. Sometimes is just trial and error. My doctor gave me a bunch of free samples of prosed and urelle to try and see if there was any difference. I actually did better on the generic urelle. I also started taking an herbal supplement called cantharis. You can find it at whole foods market. Comes in a little tube, you take 5 tiny pills under the tongue three times a day. It only costs about 6 bucks a tube which will last about 8 days. It really did help reduce my burning. And it won't set you back much if it doesn't help. You may want to check with your doctor to make sure it doesn't interact with other meds you may be taking. I hope you can try it, it did help me alot and I am staying on it for a few months to see if it keeps working. Good luck to you.

How long ago did you finish the Macrobid? Did they do a culture a week or so afterwards to make sure the infection cleared completely?

Sorry you still feel bad. :(

Kim is correct. You should have your urine checked again to make sure the infection is gone.

Thanks for those suggestions, elamar! I'll bring this up with my doc when I see him on Tuesday. Pyridium helps with my urethral pain, but not so much with the bladder pain itself, so it's probably time to try other options!

vm, SharonA: That's definitely the plan for my follow-up visit with my uro. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'm just experiencing a stubborn infection! Heh, it's funny to have an illness that makes us wish for a UTI... :lmao:

Thanks so much everyone for the tips and well-wishes! This place is so wonderful.

Instead of baking soda I used to use a scrip called Polycitra. Find out if it's still around. Have you been on Neurontin? It's a miracle drug for me. If I were cathed (I need a pedi cath also) and had a bladder infection it would take a long time for me to recover. The combination is deadly for me.

Thanks, tzake. I will look into that!

Thanks again to everyone for your support during this thread. My urologist wants to do another hydro/cysto to take a look at what's going on (my last one was 5.5 years ago, so I'm comfortable with this idea). Hopefully I'll be one of the lucky people helped by the hydro -- I have no idea if it helped or not last time as it was around the time that I started on Elmiron, started the IC diet and started changing my lifestyle. After that, who knows...just trying to hang in there as long as I can...only two more weeks until they do it!
