View Full Version : OH NO!!!! I'm showing positive for every UTI that exists
I dropped a urine sample off at my new Uro's last Friday. I've had an infection now for about 4 months. Nothing fixes it. I have a cysto tomorrow and a cat scan as well. I am showing on my urine culture every infection that there is possible. Positive for the whole gamet. They are concerned that the staples that my neobladder has been made out of are causing unending infectins that do not respond to conventional antibiotic treatments. They won't know anything until they look inside of my bladder thoroughly. I have passed 4 staples and 4 stones that I am aware of and think that there may be some stray ones that can not pass through my catheters. So they are just stuck inside of my bladder floating around, causing one Hell of an infection or infections. My hope is that they can pick those stray staples out and send me on my way with a nice antibiotic of some sort. The problem is that my body may be responding to the staples themselves that are inside of me. That means a big problem. They may have to take the staples out and sew me back up with a conventional suture if the ifections continue. I've been told by 2 doctors here in NY that using stapels for neobladders is not the preferrable way to do it. Stapels are the new way of doing them, but not the preferred way of doing them. I'm scared to death over this. I will know more by the end of the week. I hope it's as simple as what I first thought it was in that there are just some loose stray staples floating around that they can easily pick out. I'm sure they will put me to sleep to do this but you never know. I hope they don't have to redo my surgery!
Does the madness ever end???

I went in for the cysto and cat scan. There is an obstruction in my urethra so they were unable to go inside and look at my bladder. They had to stop the procedure because I was in too much pain. My doctor does not believe in torturing, which is good! They are rescheduling the surgery to have me put under general anestasia within the next week or so.
They will be cutting away the obstruction, dialating my urethra, and cuting open my bladder neck. They will also be cleaning me out of any stones, staples, and sedement.
They put me on Macrobid which I am responding to in the mean time.
The good news in this whole mess is that he spoke to my doc in MA and my new bladder was hand sewn together. No staples.....exept they don't know where the staples are coming from.
Hopefully we will know more once they have gone in and investigated.
I am hopeful. This doctor is young but I think he's willing to give me one more try before throwing in the towel.
We were all disappointed that he could not go in there yesterday but it just would not go in without cutting me. OUCH!!!

Kara, you poor thing! Do you feel the infection? For some reason I had the impression you had a stoma but then I remember you talking about a neo bladder. Is the infection causing you pain? I hope not. What a nightmare! ((hugs))
I'm not in any pain. My anatomy is so different now, I don't have a regular Urinary Tract so I don't feel much pain. When I do feel any pain, Darvocet helps. Overall the new bladder is pain free with some exceptional days. It will take 1 whole year from June to be fully pain free.
Thank you all for your unending support and love!!! <img src="graemlins/kissing.gif" border="0" alt="[kissing]" /> <img src="graemlins/angel.gif" border="0" alt="[angel]" /> <img src="graemlins/grouphug.gif" border="0" alt="[grouphug]" />

Hi Kara,
I was sorry to hear about your troubles. I will be praying that the next procedure takes care of the problem. I asked my surgeon if he used staples. He said, "Yes and no." My pouch is sewed with sutures, but to make the tube where my stoma is they use staples to make it smaller. It is wide and they must make it skinnier to work. I'm doing ok except for leaking. That is getting a little better though. I need to cath every 2 hours. I have to spread the cathing time out very gradually for the pouch to get bigger. Take care, Kara!
