well first of all i would like to thank everyone of you, i think i couldn't have got all the information i did anywhere else, i began to feel very strange in the pain killer story, i have been struggling lately to stick to otc painkillers as my dr advised me, but i couldn't the pain was so intense esp. in my left kidney,so after along discussion & the help of my nurse, she agreed to write some ultram for me & she told me to be very careful with that , what is buzzling is that even after i take ultram the pain is not completely gone...however it is far better that advil or tylenol, what is strange is that she told me that if i didn't get better with the instillations, she should transfer me to a pain dr to describe me a chronic pain reliever..so is it really that bad to be on a chronic pain meds, has any of you struggled with that issue before & are the urologists in general conservative in describing them...thank you for everything

NO...It is not bad to be on long term pain meds. It is BAD to be in pain 24/7 and never have a second of relief. There are many things out there to help us deal with pain. We should not have so suffer like many doctors like to make us do. In my experience most urologists tend to send you to pain clinics when things don't get better in a month or so.
I hope you can find something to help your pain. We are all so different in what helps one of us may not help the other.
Good luck!

Pain management specialists have specific training in controlling long term pain. I don't need pain medications full time, but if I ever reach that point, I will want the expertise of a physician who actually specializes in pain control.

Hi, I am so sorry your not feeling well. I hope you feel better soon. I do not think it is bad to use pain meds under the care of a physician. You should not suffer. There are so many meds out there that help with chronic pain that are not narcotics also. I think most pain management docs, and I say most, know better how to treat pain based on your symtoms because thats all they deal with. If you do go to one, I would try and find one that is highly recomended by your IC doc, or someone you know. Good luck to you and hope you feel better soon.
