I'm just now recovering (barely, with help from Uristat and an instill) from a NASTY all night flare I got from eating Organic Vanilla Wafers. I realize we can't have store bought cold cereals and cookies, but I thought the problem was preservatives so I started buying them from Whole Foods. Does Organic mean preservative-free? I'm still really confused about that.
Anyway I'm going through the ingredients now and can't figure it out. Any guesses? Anybody know?
Ingredients: Organic wheat flour, organic palm fruit oil, organic evaporated cane juice, organic eggs, organic evaporated cane syrup, salt, natural vanilla flavor, baking powder (sodium acid pyrophosphate, sodium bicarbonate, cornstarch, monocalcium phosphate), (leavening), sodium bicarbonate (leavening).

I would love to know the answer to this question too!!! I didnt know cold cereal was bad for IC. Maybe that is one of my problems. I eat cold cereal almost everyday. So I am very interested to know if Organic cereal/products are ok. I think its time for me to review the IC Diet.
I am going to keep an eye on this thread!

hello. i buy them also. i also buy the vanilla creme sandwich cookies. like an oreo but just vanilla. i think im ok with them. is it possible that the flare is from something else? maybe just a hormonal flare.

Nope it was absolutely the cookies that did it!! :( I've eaten them in small amounts before and suspected them. This time I ate half a box and nothing else could have done it. Dinner was vegetables and I was on a good five day flare-free run! Dang!
About cereals - I was having a really hard time with cold cereals during the first five months after developing the infection. Corn chex would amount to six hours of urethral spasms, but back then almost any food would do that.
Over time I found cereals I can tolerate better, and most of them can be found at Whole Foods (or other places like it). They have 'organic' versions of corn chex, wheat chex, cheerios, etc. For regular grocery store cereal, I can tolerate Kix pretty well (despite the B vitamins) and I'm good with shredded wheat.
This disease REALLY changes your relationship with FOOD! Before getting on the drugs with weight gain as side effects (Amitryptaline, Lyrica) I lost 20 pounds in two months!

Looking at that list of ingredients, I doubt I'd flare from it. Is it possible you have an actual food allergy to wheat or something?

This time from organic Vanilla Almond Shredded Oats cereal. Ingredients:
Whole oat flour, unsulfured mollasses, whole wheat Flour, ground almonds, wheat germ, baking soda, sea salt, natural flavors, vitamin C, Vitamin E, (mixed tocopherols(soy).
There's nothing left for me to eat, if I can't tolerate organic cereals and bread products. I'm living off vegetables and not losing weight because of the Lyrica and Amitryptaline :( :headbang:

Tara, could it be possible you can not tolarate the wheat? I know I have problems with wheat. I am pretty diet sensative myself! And if it contains wheat I am sure to flare.
Oh I wanted to add something, Maybe you could ask you Dr about Atarax. If it is because you might be allergic to some things in food the atarax would help this!

I think it might be the wheat flour. I was recently tested for food allergies and all came back negative, but I have been noticing that wheat flour seems to be in alot of things I have eaten. I am going to try wheat free beginning tomorrow and see if that helps. This certainly is tricky isn't it. Good luck to you.

Don't some people have problems with sugar, too?

I get away with wheat all the time... which I guess means I'm lucky because my syster is gluten-intolerant (Celiac Sprue) and if I combined the two diets I'd be living off of... um... carrots?

I'm reviving this thread because I have discovered what did it:
EVAPORATED CANE JUICE!
I just recently flared in the same way after eating some organic sweetened puffed wheat with very few ingredients. But the second ingredient was "EVAPORATED CANE JUICE CRYSTALS."
I've also found some minor sensitivity with 'unsulfered molasses.'

I eat Cheerios almost every morning with no problem. I can't really afford the extra cost of organics, but I do fine with regular breads, etc. from any grocery store.

Taramc...noticed in your signature that fish oil capsules bother you...It's been suggested to me to try Omega 3 capsules for my fibromyalgia...wonder what is it that bothers people?? Also saw that you take glucosamine...and read that it might cause flares

Hi ladies - I live in England so not sure if this will help anyone but I sure do hope so :) We have a health food shop here that sells rice crispies & cornflakes that I think are actually ment for those that are gluten free. The reason I mention these is that they have no added ingredients so are fabulous if you have a problems with B vits! I started the IC diet in Feb of this year & still feel that I have such a loooooooong way to go. Not sure if the B vits affect me or not but I get on very well with these 2 cereals! They've been a real saviour for me :smile tee I do get away with normal rice crispies but not all the time, so may be an issue with added vits???? I hope one day I'll be a bit more clued up :smile tee I also get away with shredded wheat but not all the time - seems to make the Vulvodynia worse (who grains I should imagine) its all sooooooooooooooo confusing isn't it!
Hope we've all had a good eating day with lots of goodies that our bladders have surrenderd too :smile tee
Big hugs
xx

Thanks Becky, yes those health food stores are in the states. Here they are called "Wild Oats" or "Whole Foods." They sell lots of preservative free cereals.
Donna, Angie, I FLARE FROM CHEERIOS every single time someone tells me they're safe and I give them a try. My guess is it's the trisodium phosphate. It's about a level 3 flare on a 1-10 scale.
And I'm so bummed about this today. Up until this week I was able to buy KIX boxes that said "no added preservatives" at the regular grocery store. Now they have started adding trisodium phosphate.
Some of us are forced to spend the extra money. My credit card is maxed now from all the stupid SPECIAL FOOD. And my financial situation is not good, believe me.
