If you have to face having your bladder removed it's important that you discuss the many options you will have with your doctor.

This comes from the ICN treatment guide.

"Some urologists are using a technique that also requires a stoma but allows urine to be stored in a pouch inside the abdomen. At intervals throughout the day, the patient puts a catheter into the stoma and empties the pouch. Patients with either type of urostomy must use very clean, or sterile, steps to prevent infections in and around the stoma."

To name a few, Kock Pouch, Indiana Pouch, Mainz Pouch, Studer Pouch, Mitrofanoff, Mainz Pouch II, J Pouch, S Pouch, W Pouch, Florida Pouch, UCLA Pouch, P Pouch, Barnett's Continent Intestinal Reservoir, there are are many, many more.....your doctor can explain them to you and decide which one would be apprpriate for you.

Your doctor will discuss which one is appropriate for your situation. He may not even know which one he/she will do until they are inside and see your abdomen. But as a patient it's nice to know that there are so many options for you if you need to have your bladder removed.

Thanks for all the great info, Kara. One question though. As I was reading about the cystectomy, it said many females require ablative surgery to remain sexually active. Do you know what that means?
Thanks.

I have no idea what that means. But I am not ready to have sex yet. We tried but it was a nightmare!

Kara, did you have your bladder removed? If so has it helped with the pain? I have often thought that if a dr. is removing a bladder for the treatment of pain, he should first do a spinal block yo see if the pain pathways in the brain are still sending pain. This has been my biggest fear to have it removed and still have the pain like some patients do.

Yes I have had my bladder removed and I have no pain. I had spinal nerve blocks done they did nothing for me. I'm really happy with my new bladder I am calling it my new best friend. It's the best decision I ever made. My story is post here on this board if you want to know about it.

Hi Kara! As you know this December will be 18 years my Bladder has been removed. Yes there are good Days and Bad Day. But what I use to have to go through! I will wear the Bag anyDay. Travel is no Problem. I had it all from Augumentation to Part Bowel to Part Bladder. From S2 Nerve Block where they cut the 2 nerves that control the Pain. Plus 3 revisions. . Like I said before. it has its Days. But life is better.

Have a Good One.

I have an internal pouch, so please ask me any questions you would like. My pouch is now 10 years old.
Jules- in answer to your question, I did not have to have any vaginal surgery when I had my pouch done, nor did I have anything done when I had my original cystectomy and ileal conduit. All my "parts" worked just fine! In fact sex was even better for me once I had my bladder and urethra taken out. Judith <img src="graemlins/bunny.gif" border="0" alt="[bunny]" />
