nuromuscular stimulatior?

My dr wrote me a script for a tens unit and I have been waiting its arivial for weeks because the rep is extremly slow so my neighbor gave me a nuromuscular stimulator is that the same thing as tens? if so it has two LARGE pads diffrent from what i have used before adn the pads are white and red? Can i use this? Im in extreme pain and i need to try tomsthing diffrent asap. If i can use this where do u sugest i put the pads? THanks
