Hi, I am wondering if anyone is currently having success with Cymbalta and if so for how long you have been on it? I started Paxil CR and when I increased the dose I started having alot of urinary retention. The retention is not something I can ignore because it causes me more pain. My doctor said I can try cymbalta which is what he wanted to give me from the beginning so now I am wondering who is doing well on this and for how long you have been on it. I am wondering since Paxil caused retention for me, that they all may cause retention for me. Thanks you very much. :) Lisa

Lisa,

I'm doing quite well with Cymbalta. I've been on it for a little over a month, 60 mg per day and it seems to be helping. I've always had retention, so I really haven't noticed it getting any worse.

You can always try it and see. We are all so different. Emotionally it has been great. I haven't had any weight gain. It actually takes my appetite away. I was on prozac 40mg per day for 3 years and still was very depressed. So, I highly recommend it.

Hope it helps if you decide to try it!

I had retention with the cymbalta. It made my IC worst, but helped with the Fibro. I was on it for about 8 months. The retention and bladder pain was not worth the benefit for Fibro. I know when I had retention it makes my bladder worse because I can't empty my bladder all the way. It keep my bladder from healing. I have heard Cymbalta does work well for some.

Lisa,
I am not currently having success because I stopped it. But I was doing really well on it. I only stopped it because I had started Topamax and I wanted to see how well the Topamax helped my IC pain. To me the Topamax was working better for pain control. But the Cymbalta was working really well with my depression but it did help somewhat with pain. But it had been awhile so I figured I would just see how I would do without it. And I have been doing ok. But If I ever get in a slump again Cymbalta will be the medicine I grab for. The only thing I did not like about Cymbalta is that is was kind of hard coming off of it.

Thank you all for the replies. I was doing great on the paxil cr, I even noticed it working but I usually have retention in the morning and thats it, and I was having it alot more then just the morning and I did not feel like I could empty my bladder. So I guess its worth a try for me. :)

Well, I stopped the Paxil CR and the retention went away. It was working so good to. :( It caused retention so bad, my bladder was throbbing. I have not tried Cymbalta yet, I wanted to give my bladder a little rest and I will try that next week and see how I do. Thanks everyone.

Lisa, The cymbalta has been a lifesaver for me! It has helped with the pain so much! It of course has also helped with my moods. Who wouldn't be depressed dealing with this!!
my pain management has me also on topomax. I hope this all helps. If not we will try something else. I have also lost over 10lbs on cymbalta it has decreased my appetite. let us know how it goes!

Hi, so far I am doing really well with Cymbalta, I am on 30 mg, I have had NO side effects at all yet. No bladder pain from it. No retention yet, but I have to increase my dose in 4 days. I did not experience any nausea at all and I take it in the morning when I wake up. Just an update. :)

The only side effects I had from it was not sleeping much and bad dreams. It helped a lot with the depression, bladder pain (along with vicoden) and all over body aching. Bad part is I gained way to much weight and almost up to 190 pounds now. Have been trying to get off of it and having no luck so it is very hard to stop. I end up feeling worse then when I started it. I have never had a hard time stopping any of the anti depreesant pills I tried before. Wish I had never started the cymbalta.

Waterflow, that's interesting you are gaining weight on it, usually people lose. But I always am in the "rare" category: I got constipated on Topamax, which no one does! I also am losing, not gaining on Tofranil (although it isn't making a difference at 2 weeks, so I may not stay on it.)

Since I tend to get the "opposite" of all the regular side effects, I am very wary of Cymbalta. It has rare, but irreversible eye complications, such as glaucoma, myopia development, retinal detatchments, and edema.

I find in the short time on it that I am eating much less. I also had some nausea today for the first time but my doc that gave it to me said that was common for the 1st few weeks, and today is the first time it happened. I do notice I am not near as hungry but I am sure as my body adjusts I will get back to normal, alot of meds have that effect on me in the beginning so I am not concerned.
I can say coming off the lyrica was not fun, I had bad headaches and they went away finally but I don't feel to well, I know its my body adjusting to being without it.

OrlandoP, there was nothing on the side effect paper about the eye problems and such. Maybe that is why my eyes hurt at times? I did get constipated on the cymbalta big time too.

Lisa, glad you are not having a bad time with it and not gaining weight. Hope it works out for you.

Thanks Ronda, I was nauseous yesterday but it wasn't to bad, and my doc said thats one of the things people complain about most and usually goes away in a few weeks. It wasn't even that bad, I think the withdraw from lyrica is what has been an issue. I will be glad when thats out of my system. The good thing is, on the 30mg, I have not noticed any retention like the paxil cr was causing, so I am happy. :)

Hi Lisa,

Why did you have to come off the Lyrica? Are you noticing any pain relief with the Cymbalta? I am currently on 25 mg of Tofranil, and am not having bad side effects, but must admit, I don't think I'm getting pain relief.

If LeeLee88 is around, how soon after you started the Elavil/Tofranil did you get relief? I'm on week 3.

Lisa, glad you are not having a bad time with it and not gaining weight. Hope it works out for you.

Google it. It most certainly is one of the side effects. Rare, but serious. Also, blurred vision, floaters and pain are more common.

I always am super-careful with the eye stuff. I am an artist, and I can't afford to lose or damage my sight!

As for the constipation, I hear you. For me, it's such a tradeoff. Fissures, or IC relief. Very hard choice!

Hi, I had to come off Lyrica due to nightmares and they were everynight, all night long. I got to the point where I didn't want to go to sleep. Thats not me at all. I am a sleeper. It was REALLY working for me to. So far doing well with Cymbalta. Thanks for all the helpful tips. :)

OrlandoP
04-22-2008, 03:07 AM
That's too bad about the nightmares! I definitely have more circus-like dreams on the Tofranil, and find it extremely disruptive. I basically don't sleep as well when I'm on my mind's "movie set".

Good luck with the Cymbalta. I may pursue this option.

Hi, I am up to 60 mg of Cymbalta, been on it 9 days, I took 30mg for the first week and now am on my 2nd day of 60mg. I am doing GREAT, I have no side effects now and I have NO retention from it. :woohoo: It is to soon to say how it is working, they said about 6 weeks to start noticing improvement, my main concern was retention so I am very happy with the results so far! I do think my mood is a little better already. :) Thanks everyone.

Hi, I been on Cymbalta about a month now, I am doing really well, I have no retention issues at all. I went to a reputable psych doc and he said that paxil cr is known to cause retention and cymbalta is not known for that. I actually think I urinate better now that I am on it. He said it takes atleast 6 weeks to notice improvement, but that its one of his favorites, especially with pain issues involved also. I notice I am starting to feel better and its also used for Fibro. Just wanted to give you an update. :)

Lisa,

I'm getting ready to start Cymbalta today and have been verrryyyyy nervous about it because of the retention issues I have with most meds. I tried Lyrica last week at such a LOW dose (only 25 mg and only once) and I got so very very dizzy and felt so out of it I thought I was going to pass out from it - that was it, no Lyrica for me! Doc wanted to try it for the neuropathy pain and I said I'd give it a shot but...OMG...how horrible! I already have very very low blood pressure and even at that very very low dose I thought I was gonna drop to the floor!

So now...Cymbalta has been rx'd - and I'm scared LOL! Ugh. I hate new meds. Going to go get it filled here in a few mins, he's starting me at 30 mg once a day for 2 weeks, then up to 60 mg (30 twice a day).... I see where people are losing weight on it..hmmm...dont really want to lose any more, I like where I'm at but I DEFINATELY dont want to GAIN any. I've fought so hard to get where I am now and I'm comfortable, not happy, but okay with it ya know? In the past I took Neurontin and Gabatril, both of which I am allergic to and both caused me severe renetion and bad seizures at dosages over 900 mg (neurontin) and at 60 mg of Gabatril - and all antidepressants cause me to retain to where I have to cath myself so you can see where I'm a little worried to say the least ....

So....worst side effects you've had? Best? Dont hold back LOL I'm one for honesty. I'm not the type to "freak out" and read the "labels" on the drug sheet first - I only read them if and when I feel something isnt right when I take a med. But I do like to know the most common side effects and first hand from people - not off of a piece of paper ya know? I also hope it helps with the depression I get - it swings here and there...I have up days and down days, but who doesnt? Hopefully it will keep me a little more even keeled in that area as well.

Okay - this post is also for anyone else too. I've read thru all the posts on here so far, but if there's anything else that you'd like to add that isnt already posted, please feel free to do it. I'm also on Topamax too, so anyone on that and Cymbalta or tried it, and had experiences feel free to share.

Thanks bunches!

Hugs,
Brittany

Hi Brittany, I have nothing but good things to say about Cymbalta. I also have very low blood pressure, and I am very sensitive to meds. I got nauseous one day with it and then I took it with some milk and did great, so if you can, eat a little something, because for the first few weeks I hear it can make you nauseous. I took 30mg for a week and then went to 60mg. My mood is better already. I was on paxil cr and I had such bad retention, I had to stop it and I actually urinate better with Cymbalta, my stream is much stronger. I have not had any retention issues at all since I started it, no flares. I did see where some did get retention from it, so I would keep an eye on that. My psych md said paxil cr and some of the other ones are more known to cause retention where Cymbalta is not. So I hope it doesn't cause retention for you. I did not feel dizzy and I think it gave me more energy, because it makes me feel better. I really have not had any problems at all. I was worried to start it to. Now I am so glad I did. I hope it works well for you, it takes 6 weeks to start noticing improvement they told me. Please keep me posted how it works for you. :) Lisa

Also, your dose is different then mine, I took 30mg once a day for a week, and then went to 60mg once a day. I take it in the morning when I wake up. :)

thanks Lisa for the info :). Guess its time for me to head to the pharmacy. Yeah, I'm looking at the script now and he does have it at 30 mg once daily for 2 weeks then twice a day from there on out. Guess he wants me to start slowly since I'm so sensitive.

Glad to hear it didnt mess with your blood pressure - thats always a huge concern for me since I normally run anywhere from 80/50 to 90/70 most days, so anything that even disturbs it just a little bit and I hit the floor. Ugh - so discouraging as I'm sure you can relate. I should have a tilt table in my house LOL! Hubby teases me all the time that we should pad the floors with Tempur-pedic material . Smartie pants...

Will keep ya posted on how I do - keep me posted on how you're doing will you? I hope this really helps with the peripherpal neuropathy because this is the only med option for me - I cant take any of the others since I'm allergic to them or have reactions to them. I cant handle this nerve pain...its excruitiating, which is why I havent really been on the boards this past week or so. :(

Hugs

Brittany, I really hope it works for you. I have the same blood pressure as you. I am 80/50 to 90/70. Thats funny. I have always been low. It has not affected my blood pressure at all. My rheumo said it has been proven to be just as effective as Lyrica and Neurontin, so I hope it works. I was thinking maybe they have you taking it 2 times a day so you don't get the full dose all at once and maybe you will tolerate it better that way.

Well, I started having bladder pain, it was constant. I would say about the past week, non stop. I called my doc and he said to cath myself to see if I was retaining. I was retaining, alot. So he said I have to come off Cymbalta now. I asked him why all of a sudden, and he said it can happen gradually over a short period, its not something that has to happen right away. The more my body was getting used to it, the more I started to retain. I think I am right around my 6th week or so. I decreased my dose yesterday as he told me to and I already notice a difference for the better for my bladder. I have to wean off it slowly. :( Oh well, I tried.

Hi, I didn't really know I was retaining until I cathed. I actually felt like I was emptying, but I wasn't and in turn I started have more and more bladder pain. I only took 30mg yesterdat and today I am not taking any, I am weaning off slowly but already today I feel SO much better. The bladder pain was horrible. I hate the thought of even having to take it again, but I don't want bad withdraw symptoms. I was only on it 6 weeks or so, so hopefully it wont be to bad. I didn't have the normal retention felt like I had to go and couldn't with it, I felt like I was going ok but I wasn't emptying.

This weaning off process is AWFUL. I was not even on it that long. Whats bothering me the worst is its cauing me to have anxiety. I never really had probems with anxiety, just a few times in my life. But thats one of the withdraw symptoms. I will be glad when this is over. :(

Hey Lisa, Sorry to hear that you were having retention. Funny thing is I am starting to wonder if i am starting to have some also. but I also added the lyrica back into the mix. My pain management did tell me that when people go off the cymbalta they do feel bad. Hang in there!

I am down to 30mg now, and I did skip one day, and I was at the mall, I started sweating really bad, Eric said I looked awful and I felt like I was going to pass out, and my heart was pounding. So I went to 30mg daily instead of every other day, going from 60 to 30 was horrible and I wasn't even on it that long. The first day or so I slept non stop it seemed, then the heart palpitations started. I could not imagine how it would be if I was on it longer. As soon as I went to 30mg, the bladder pain was gone! Atarax seems to help with the heart pounding feeling, thats really the only thing that is bothering me and each day it gets less and less, so thats good. I am going to ask for 20mg and do that next for a week and wean off in about 2 weeks. I am just getting used to the 30mg. I was on paxil cr for about the same time 6 weeks or so and I just stopped it and I did not withdraw from that. So I will get there, it just is taking some time and I rather do it as slowly as possible.

The withdrawls from cymbalta were a nightmare to me. I thought I would never be normal again. I missed a week of work. I could not sleep, had tons of brain zaps, vertigo, and sweated like crazy. I was an emotional wreck. I am sorry anyone has to go through that. I hope it gets better...I was on it for about 8 months.

Hi all, Just wanted to say I have always had a hard time taking meds but I take both cymbalta and lyrica when I started them they started me very low and worked me up I take it all at night never had bad dreams I just rest well it takes about 45 minutes to get to sleep and i'm out cold for like 4 hours which is the longest I ever seem to sleep at a time. If I have to get up to go to the bathroom during the night sometimes I feel a little dizzy but it is worth it to me to feel a little better. I cried so much about having to take them to start with so I gave them a running shot.

I also have very low BP again another thing lots of us seem to have in common, how strange!!

Thank you everyone. I am finally used to the 30mg.
Bea, I started neurontin again, once I cut down on Cymbalta I felt so much better. I may ask my uro about the valium suppositories. I am going to take info with me and see what he thinks but other then that, I don't really want any new meds, I am ok with what I am on and I will start PT again soon. I only went back on neurontin for my fibro, cause I was on cymbalta for that and since that failed, neurontin even at a low dose was working good for my fibro. Lyrica at a low dose worked good for my bladder but not my fibro, and I had nightmares bad. I don't have them on neurontin, so maybe I can get higher in dose this time and it will work better for my bladder. Lyrica withdraw is horrible to and I was on that such a short time. I want to avoid meds if I can that have bad withdraw. Hope your doing well. :)

I spoke with my doc today, he said 6 weeks is usually when the Cymbalta is at high levels and starts to work, which is why I am having problems weaning. He wants me to take the last 2 days of my 30's and then go to 20mg for one week and then do 20mg every other day for a week and then go off. He said I can use xanax if I get the palpitaions bad. The funniest thing is, I don't normally have anxiety but it is a withdraw symptom. As far as my mood I am ok on the 30. Hopefully I won't feel that to much since I wasn't on it that long. I will be glad when this is over. He said things will get back to normal in about a week or 2 after I stop. :(

Hi, I am on 20mg every other day now, I went a little slower with it, the HARDEST thing was going from 60 to 30. That was a nightmare. They should have people wean off slower then that, like 60 to 40 and I wasn't even on it that long. I would say for a good week I had quite a few issues with not feeling well at all. Once I got used to the 30, I went to 20 and was fine, no problems at all, but thats not much if a decrease in dose. I noticed feeling very edgy at first, had heart palpitations going from 60 to 30. But now I only have 2 days left of the 20 and I am doing every other day and I seem to be ok so far. :) I hope the worst is over.

Well I am off Cymbalta. :woohoo: That was hard!! I am so glad I am off it and today is actually the best day so far. I was emotional. I also had a complete body ache, I did not think it was related to the cymbalta and thought it was my fibro, but once talking to someone else who stopped it and felt the same way, and reading more about the withdraw I found it was common. My ankles even hurt, my back, my neck, my joints. It started right as I stopped it completely and it was pretty bad. I know depression can make you ache all over also, so stopping the med did make me more depressed. Today is the first day I actually woke up and feel a little better. I am SO glad. I was more worried about the anxiety part because I normally dont have heart palpitations and thats one of the major withdraw symptoms, but that subsided after I got used to the 30mg. It did not happen going to the 20 and weaning off. Its so important to wean off this med then try and stop it, I couldn't imagine that. But they said with all anti depressants your supposed to wean off. They should of had me go from 60 to 40 first, and then 30. Because that was the hardest part. But today is the best day so far so I am hoping each day gets better and better. A few days ago, I hurt so bad, I was seriously thinking of an ER visit. I haven't been to the ER in years! I never go unless I am really having a problem, and I was thinking about it, thats how bad I felt. But today is better, yay. :)

Hi Lisa,

I am also going through Cymbalta withdrawal--I was on 30mg for two weeks, then my pills ran out and the doctor was out of town so I had to go cold turkey! In Brazil, doctors can't "call in" prescriptions, they have to be written. I have that all-over body ache too, can't believe it, I had no idea that was a withdrawal symptom! Have you been moody? I've been sobbing and depressed for no apparent reason...hoping that's a symptom of withdrawal too and that it will stop. Other than that, I've just been either sleeping tons, but fitfully, with little rest, or going on these maniacal stints where I do a million things at once. Haha, these crazy drugs we put in our systems! I have never been one to have withdrawal problems with drugs, but Cymbalta and Neurontin were the pits, like you said. But the withdrawal period is relatively short, thank God for that! I hope you're feeling better!

For those of you that have been on this board for a long time, does cymbalta seem to be the antidepressant of choice for most people. I personally got very tired on it and I know that it can raise blood pressure but I am thinking of trying it again. For me the depression and fatigue that I experience is almost as bad al the pelvic disorder. I was also wondering if most of you still take a little elavil or nortriptyline with your cymbalta to help calm down the nerves. Thanks for any info you can provide Gram

Hi there. Cymbalta is an anti depressant. Its also used for chronic pain, but I had urinary retention on it. I was still on my Elavil 25mg, but thats all up to your doctor, some do not recomend it. So I would talk to your doctor about it. It did not make me tired at all. :) Lisa

I was told that Cymbalta does not cause the blood pressure issues that effexor can. Has anyone else heard this to be true? I tried Cymbalta a couple of years ago and I got really tired taking it. Right now my depression has gotten to be as bad as the disease that is causing it. Fatigue is a big issue for me and I would like to hear from other if Cymbalta helped in a big way with both depression and anxiety. My anxiety has gotten so bad it is hard for me to leave the house so I really need to work on this. I have never gone for CBT and I am thinking that maybe seeing someone like that might help in additon to the medication. Dealing with the pain for fourteen years without a remission has really drained me dry. So for those of you who have used cymbalta for a year or so would you let us know how it is going for you. Thanks

Grammy,
I just wanted to give you some encouragement about seeing a counselor. I have not been in this situation as long as you, but have felt that it is time to talk through my problems with someone (besides my adoring husband). The issues that ICers face are unique and unpredictable and unfortunately sometimes discouraging. All of these things are difficult to deal with alone- I'm very thankful for the discussion board, but... it's not the same as a live person- or a pill.
I was raised in a family that would frown upon me seeing a counselor- but they don't have IC. I was always told to "keep a stiff upper lip" and "be tough." Hiding my feelings didn't make them go away- and they even make my flares worse.
Hang in there. Talk to us, talk to someone. You are not alone and never will be. There will always be a tomorrow- and tomorrow may bring something fantastic.
:grouphug:
Hugs and hang in there.

I have just recently started cymbalta, 1 week at 30 MG 2 days 60 MG. The pain is still there. I am a little less depressed with a little more energy. I am having surgery in 10 days, a complete hysteromy and a bladder lift. They say this might help with the frequency and urgency but nothing as far as the pain. I have been on Elmiron for 2 years, and just about every other medication you have mentioned. Nothing has worked. The doctor that put me on cymbalta is a psycrotrist, she also has me taking Xanax 1MG at night. My family dr. doesn't seem to know much about IC, just that it is painful. I am scared about the surgery but I am willing to try anything right now. I have had this condition since 1999 but was not diagnoised with IC until Nov 2006. I am only 58 years old and the quality of life is just not there. I am way to young to feel this way. Sure wish they had spell check on here. lol Wish me luck and say a prayer or two. Thanks

Hi, Cymbalta did not make me tired and it did give me energy and make me feel better but it caused me to retain urine. I don't have any blood pressure problems so I don't really know if it can cause that or not. I actually have low blood pressure which is my normal.
carolpaquette, I had a hysterectomy in February. I did not have a bladder lift but I did have everything removed. I had the surgery done for bleeding issues. It did not help my bladder at all but they said it wouldn't but again I didn't have the bladder lift as you are. As far as having IC and a hysto, the only thing I would have insisted they do if I knew better was an epidural. Because when I woke up all I felt was my bladder, but I would think they are probably doing one on you since your having more done? Thats always something you can discuss with your doctor. I was really nervous to. I hope it goes great for you. Please keep us posted and I will keep you in my prayers.
