It's been 8 months since my symptoms started (urgency, intersourse pain, pelvic and back pain, bladder discomfort, food sensitivity, etc...) within a month of my symptoms and researching to see what was wrong with me I felt I had IC. But of course, I did what we all should do, not self diagnose...and went to a doctor. Several at this point. No one would consider that the bladder was truly the cause. I was given antibiotics, pain killers, muscle relaxers, several tests and studies (urological and gynecological) and even went for physical therapy for the pelvic floor for about 8 weeks. Now frustrasted I went back to the uro I saw in October. He said then that I MIGHT have IC but wasn't willing to go there yet. So he sent me on my way to try all the things I stated above. I did everything he told me to do and went back to him last week and told him I no better. He did another exam and told me he agrees that my pain is indeed coming from the bladder and, with nothing else working and symptoms persisting, I may very well have IC but a mild case. I don't care if I have MILD or SEVERE. He is now going to try me on some IC medicines and is quite convinced I will be fine. He mentioned amitryptyline as one of them. I am VERY concerned because I have a thyroid problem which was not under control for the past few months and it made me gain about 15lbs. .

Believe me...I would love to be out of pain and I don't want to sound shallow..but having thyoid problems which can cause weight struggle is a battle as it is. Having this chronic pain for 8 months which may turn out to be IC has been very hard. And yes, depressing. It's hard to deal with all this as all of you I am sure can understand. There is already a struggle of not feeling normal, or womanly (because of sexual problems) or carefree when having bad days...the last thing I need is to gain (even more) weight and be depressed because of that. Its bad enough I have all these other things to deal with. I don't want to worry about weight gain and I have read in many of my researching that Elavil is BIG for weight gain. I think I read that Trofranil could be an alternative and doesnt cause weight gain. But then lies the question...does it work for the pain and/or discomfort? I want to talk to my doctor about all this and hope he is sensitive to my concerns about the weight. I don't want it to come off shallow saying "yeah I want to feel better but don't want to gain weight". Because I don't think it has much to do with being shallow. I said it before...we have so much to deal with and worry about with this IC that we already have struggles and moments of depression and self worth and self asteem..don't need the weight gain adding to it. At least I don't.

ANY ADVICE WOULD BE SO APPRECIATED!

With my experience with Elavil I did gain alot of wieght BUT it also relieved 80% of my pain.. But I had to discontiue because I was gaining to much weight.. SO my URO switched me to Tofranil another Tricyclic antidepressant. And it has been working really well and I am not gaining any weight from it. I am only on 10mg a night. So if you decide on one of these meds I would suggest a low dose to begin with.. Good luck and I hope you are pain free soon...

My only personal experience is with Elavil (Amitriptyline). I have taken 25mg per day for several years. It basically took away the high level pain that I suffered with in the beginning. It allows me to live a pretty normal life. I did gain weight but am now in the process of slowly losing it even while continuing the same dosage.

I have been on Elavil (25 mg) since the end of January - to date I have gained 6 pounds - HOWEVER - I had lost 15 pounds after my dx - due to diet changes and pain (when I'm in pain I can't eat) - so for the moment I am just keeping an eye on things - It has helped my pain level - so I am sticking it out - IF the weight gain becomes a problem then I will discuss switching to Trofranil -
I believe most doctors start out with Elavil first - I agree with LeeLee - maybe you could suggest starting at a lower dosage and gradually increasing up to whatever level is therapeutic for you.
Good Luck.

Hi, I been on Elavil for 9 months, I take 25 mg at bedtime, I did not gain any weight at all. It really will vary from person to person, it helped me so much even in the first week I was on it. Hang in there.

Hi, Ive been on tofronil 10 mg for about a year now, good for pain, good for frequency, no weight gain. I think elavil may be more popular though, there apears not to be many of us on tophrinil, I don't know why that is. Maybe it is an older medicine???? My uro said that they are both in the same class of drug but the tophrinol make you less sleepy. So of course, with that information, my choice had to be tophrinol.
