I was just wondering how long it took you to feel better after your urethral dialation.

I'd also like to know what kind of instructions you were given/expectations you were told about in regard to recovery. (things to help, things to avoid)

I'm just now thinking I was better from my dialation and hydro done over 3 weeks ago, but I tried to do my excercise stuff for the first time since and things got really aggrivated and painful again. My husband and I have been abstaining but I wonder when I'm going to feel well enough to try anything, and if there is a specific window of time we should be waiting.

I'm feeling like the uro really did not communicate with me about what to expect or precautions so I thought I'd see how others were told to deal/recover/and duration of healing etc. I have another appt with him but it got bumped to three weeks from now, and the nurse and I don't get along well over the phone so I'm hesitant to call again.

I"m sorry you're feeling poorly still after your procedure - I do hope you feel better soon. Its been a very long time since my last cysto and hydro but whenever I've had them done its taken quite a few weeks for me to heal - I'm one of the ones that dont really benefit from being stretched, so I stopped having them done. As far as the urethral dialation - is there a reason your doctor did that, meaning did he give you specifics as to why? I know years ago it was thought to help IC by some doctors, however I thought it was now considered an evasive procedure and isnt performed as much  unless you have alot of scar tissue or something around your urethra. ?? When they perform the cysto / hydro the instruments they use stretch it slightly, perhaps thats what you're referring to as well.

Maybe you should call your uro and discuss how you are feeling. I know when I had mine done I always felt like I was peeing razor blades or glass constantly, so he gave me Pyridium to help things calm down. If that is too strong for you to take, there is an over the counter med called Uristat that also helps and isnt as strong as Pyridium. Either way you should call your doctor and let him/her know whats going on.

I do hope you feel better soon.

Hugs,
Brittany

Hi, I am sorry your not feeling well. I would call your uro and talk with them about your conerns. I do know, it took me long to recover from mine. Once I did recover, I felt better. I was also given pyridium back then to help calm things down. I would still call your uro with your concerns. Hope you feel better soon.

I too had the dialation I was mad, Dr. gave me no freezing or pain meds, didn't tell me what he was doing, didn't give me a choice. He just said oh your urethra needs to be dilalted and did it, he didn't tell me what to expect either afterwards. I am sorry I don't remeber the recovery I was so mad I think I blooked it all out. Last time I saw that Dr.

I'm am so sorry to hear your in so much discomfort it took me about 3 weeks to start feeling better after my hydro, as far as the urethral dialation I had mine a year ago not with the hdyro, I often get urethral problems and right now it's on going , the purpose of the dialation for me was because I had urethral stenosis so the doctor says I would say I have to agree, I had a hard time handling catheters it would hurt to much plus in the office cysto showed I had alot of inflammation in my urethra, I know dialations are not practiced much anymore but my uro said it was worth a try to see if my symptoms improved . yes the dialation itself is somewhat invasive and it took awhile for that to heal however I frequently use urethral suppositories that help for the most part it's a compounded suppostitory made of steriod/antibiotic, my uro suggest that to be a treatment after dialation to help with any infection and inflammation. I have to say it lasted pretty good for a year, but now I'm there again, my urethral symptoms are more bothersome my bladder is doing well. I hope you feel better soon!!

I have had several of these before I was diagnosed with IC. When I had it done in the doctor's office they didn't work and I never felt better. When I had it done as an outpatient surgery, and he did a spiral cutting and dialation, it to me a week to get out of bed and then about two months before I felt normal. The first time I had this done as an outpatient surgery I felt normal for about 3 years after my recovery. The second was about 2 years, 3rd 1 year and the 4th I never felt better. I had one done in November as an outpatient surgery with a hydrodistention. She didn't do the spiral cut but I still took over a month for the constant burning and cramping to stop.

I had the urethral dialation done a long time ago, but not with the hydros. All I can remember was that it hurt. They didn't give me anything for the pain the first time, but when the doctor did the second time I was prepared and took some pain medication, and didn't feel anything then. Sorry I couldn't help more. Hope you are feeling better soon.

thanks for all the replies...sorry I haven't been back sooner. I am doing better now.

I had the dialation done because there was an active infection there plus scar tissue, which he said was probably hindering proper urination and maybe even harboring the urine in the scar tissue leading to the infection or the undiagnsed infection causing the scar tissue. I had been to several doctors who told me they couldn't figure anything out, but they all said I had trace amounts of blood in my urine and hit and miss with the urinalysis saying if there was infection or not. I'm glad I took the initiative to see a uro on my own!!

The pain after the procedure had escalated to a point where I could not even ride in a car because the movement and vibration was excruciating. When I called back they did change my antibiotic to something else (since there was an infection at the time of the procedure) and gave me some pain meds and urised which is similar to pyridium only blue pee and including an anti-spasmodic factor. My stomach doesn't tolerate pyridium and this one seemed to do better.

I don't know if I am cured, and my bladder seems more irritated than ever, but at least the pain factor seems to be letting down. I have my follow up on the 21st. Not sure what will happen then...
