Well Mom had her bladder removed on April 10. We had her at the hospital by 5:45am and they came and got her about 6:15. We did not see the doctor until 5:00pm. The update was great he said that he had no problems at all and everything went very well.... We got to see her around 6:20pm and she was already awake and talking and eating ice chips.... The did not have a room for her in ICU so she spent the night in recovery... The next morning she got moved to a regular surgical ward. The doctors said that she is recovering extraordinarily well... Her stoma is very small and collecting urine... For the first time in years my mom has no urgency.. she could not believe it when she woke up and realized she did not have to go to the bathroom. You would not believe how well she looks, it has been a very long time since I have seen her look so good. Yesterday (Saturday) she got up and took a walk in the hallway, she did very well and enjoys sitting up on the side of the bed and in the chair...She would give just about anything for a ice cold sip of coke. She is so thirsty, but she cannot eat or drink yet due to the NG tube going to her stomach. We are all hoping that they will take it out today or Monday. Well I will keep you all updated when I can. I have been spending most of my waking hours at the hospital so I will update again soon.... Thank you all for your prayers and thoughts I will be sure that I let Mom know....

I am thrilled that she is doing so well. She will feel even better once that NG tube is out! I hate having those things, but they do the job in keeping the stomach empty. Hopefully her bowels will wake up soon so they can take it out. Send her my best. Judith

Hello all.... I am so sorry that I have not posted anything in a while.... But no news is good news. Mom is supposed to come home today, she is on solid foods and holding everything down. She has all but one of her drainage tubes out and her ileal conduit is draining perfectly. She is doing wonderful. I did not realize how strong she was. She never even complained once about anything. I cannot wait to have her home, it seems so empty around this big house without her. And I know that she is anxious to come home also. Her incision is about 6-8 inches in length and healing beautifully. Anyway just wanted to give you a quick update... I will let you know when she comes home. She asks me all the time about you guys... Take care and thanks for all your prayers again...

Glad to hear she is home. With time the inscision pain will get better as you know. How is she doing with changing her appliance? If she is not happy with what they gave her most ostomy companies will send free samples to try out. A wonderful web all about ostomies is www.ostomates.org (http://www.ostomates.org) She will find lots of answers to any questions she may have and the people who frequent it are great! I have even met some of them in person. Judith bunny

Mom is out of ICU and she is doing great.... Thank you for all your prayers and thoughts... She was in serious condition thought, when they cut her small intestine she had some feces in it and it spread into her pelvic cavity they had to go into her back and drain it out and insert a catheter to drain it... She also had a perforated stomach during all this and her abdomen blew up to look like she was 9 months pregnant.. they went in and fixed it... so basically she had three surgeries. But the good news is that her ileal loop is working well... her stoma is functioning well and everything is going good for her now... We are just keeping our fingers crossed... Well going to go to bed and try to get some sleep.... Thanks again for everything....

No more pain or frequency or urgency and my ic belly is finally going away. Your mom will be amazed at how fast she will recover now. It's just those first few weeks that are tough. I am so sorry your mom is having such problems. I was in the hospital for 14 days and I thought that was a long time! Is this all because of her pancreas? What are they doing for her? Hello everyone... I am so sorry that I have not written in a while. Mom came home May 21st. She is still having complications but she is definately recovering... Just recovering slower than we would like. She is still not allowed to eat on account of some of her complications. They want her body to heal naturally without anything aggravating it. She is on total parental nutrition at the house. So her body is getting everything it needs, but it will be wonderful when she is able to eat. She is such an amazing person, I would not be able to deal with all that she has dealt with. She is 100% my hero.... I cannot wait until she is her normal self... But the good news is that she has no more frequency or urgency and no more back pain like she was having before her cystectomy... Her ileostomy is working wonderfully.... thank you all for your wonderful thoughts and prayers... I am sure that she will be back on the computer soon..............Thanks again Michelle grouphug

So glad your mom home and doing better. I have been on TPN many times and it is not fun, but at least we have it as an option. I do want to clarify something for you though. Even though they used ileum to make your mom's ileal conduit, it is called a urostomy. An ileostomy is for stool. If either of you have any ostomy related questions I would be happy to answer them. Michelle,
Thanks for the update on your mom. She is truly an angel for having dealt with so much and now this. I can truly see why she is such an inspiration to you. I dont know if I could go through all she has been through these last 6 weeks. But she is strong and will overcome. Remember, God doesn't give us anything we can't handle, it just seems like the load is a little heavier at times. I will continue to keep your mom in my prayers that she continues to heal and will be able to eat on her own again.
Hugs and lots of Love,

Well I think that Mom is finally on the mend. She has moved from UMass hospital to Hubbard Rehab Hospital. She is doing so much better. She still has the vomiting but I just think that it is from all of the medicine she was on for the past four months. I think that her body is just trying to re-adjust to being on its own again without all the drugs telling it what to do. I am so grateful for all of you, this has been a horribly long ordeal since April 9th and I cannot wait until things are back to a somewhat normal state. All of the prayers, email and flowers have really helped. This has taken such a toll on not only my mom but my dad and the rest of the family. I think that once she is home everyone will probably sleep for about 3 weeks just to make up for all the sleep lost. Mom is doing her rehab. real well. They walk her to the gym and she does her exercises and then she walks back. This does make her quite tired though. But she is not far from coming home for good. I cannot wait for that day to come.....
Thanks again,

Just a quick update. I am so sorry that it has been so long since I have updated you. I got back about 1 week ago from being with Mom for 3 1/2 weeks. The trip went well she got stronger and stronger by the day. Then on August 21 she had a small bowel obstruction ( for the 5th time ) and it landed her a 4 day stay at the hospital. She is doing much better now, but unfortunatley it does continue to slow down or obstruct again at least once a week. But the difference is that she stays home and fights the vomitting and nausea at the house. She has come such a long way though. She is a strong and amazing person. I have no idea how one person can go through every thing she has been through and not become depressed or even want to continue. She is sure my hero. I admire her for this. Thanks again for all your prayers and thoughts I know that myself and my entire family especially my mom has benefited from you all... thanks and take care..

Hi, your mum is surely one strong lady, and I do hope that she progresses well, it is amazing sometimes isn't it, how our mums are really such strong women, I know I lost mine but I remember how she never let anything get her down even when she was ill. I must say your mum is very lucky to have such a caring and loving daughter, take care Michelle and lots of prayers for your mum, all the best to you both, hugs Iris grouphug grouphug

Michelle, I am so sorry your mother has gone through such a horrible experience. There isn't much I can say that others haven't already said, but when I read about her numerous bowel obstructions, I wonder if the doctors have considered that she may have Crohn's disease. Crohn's causes bowel obstructions from the chronic inflammation. It's just like having IC in the gastrointestinal tract. I have both diseases, so I know it does happen. I don't want to distress you or your mother, but I would feel terrible , if that turned out to be the reason, and I said nothing. It might be a good time to ask a gastroenterologist for an opinion. I sincerely hope your mother gets better every day.
{{{{{Michelle**********It's amazing how much your mother's body has been able to tolerate. As a mother of an adult child I know how much it hurts when daughters are just too busy help out. My daughter is an RN but she says she gets paid to wipe other people clean, not me:(
YOU my child are responsible for the strength your mother has found to fight this horrible stuff that's been shoved on your plate. You could have run and hid weeks ago but you didn't. You stayed and that is something you will always have and no one will be able to take it from you or your mother.
Bottom line is NOT what we leave this world with but what we do while we are here and you are a true angel May God bless you many many times over~

Hi everyone, I've been home since August and now just getting to the computer. I thank you all for your prayers during my long ordeal. After 6 months I just started driving again. I doing much better, eating anything and everything, still have a long way to go. I do hate the bag for my bowels and can't wait for the reversal of that. They say 6 months so i think December will be the time, but the thought of another operation sort of has me scared. thank you also for the flowers they were greatly appreciated. I just read all the post that where placed during my ordeal and have seen all the prayers you all have sent my way thank you. I still get nutrietion at night i still have a pic-line in my arm. Be glad when things get somewhat back to normal.

I am so glad your mom is finally pain free. I can remember laying in bed all those years undiagnosed and just wanting to sleep and not wake up until things got better. I pray that this is the solution and that your mom's life can go back to normal. Hope everything continues to go well.

HI EVERYONE,
I HAVE CIS FOR YEARS NOW. I HAVE TRIED EVERY MEDICATION UNDER THE SUN. I HAVE HAD MANY DMSO TREATMENTS, WITH NO SUCCESS. TOMORROW I SEE MY UROLOGIST TO ASK IF I CAN HAVE THE BLADDER REMOVAL SURGERY. AFTER READING ABOUT THE OTHER LADY'S PAINFULL SURGERY , I'M NOT SO SURE NOW WHAT TO DO??? ALWAYS IN TERRIBLE PAIN AND VERY TIRED ALL THE TIME. REALLY DEPRESSED. FEEL LIKE GIVING UP. I KNOW I'M NOT THE ONLY IN PAIN OUT THERE. I'M NOT LOOKING FOR SYMPATHY. DIDN'T REALIZE THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE WITH THIS PROBLEM OUT THERE.
