View Full Version : The hydro and a large bladder...

I think i've gotten a little post happy lately, but I guess it happens when you have doctors that aren't helping you like they should. I tend to get better answers on here, so here it goes. Thanks goodness someone is willing to help me. But my question is this? Is it dangerous to do a hydro/cysto several times on an already large bladder? I was told after my hydro that my bladder is quite large I have found that normally IC is found in people with smaller bladders with little capacity or atleast that is what I have read. I have a "feeling" people with smaller bladders seem to benefit more from a hydro, which makes a lotta sense. The hydro is stretching the muscle, therefore making it bigger, or atleast thats why I would think it would help someone with a small bladder. To get to the point, at my last Uro appointment in March, the very ODD resident( isay odd cuz wow, he was, he wouldnt even look at you hardly, can we say crrrrreepy?) brought up doing another hydro, I quickly shut that idea down real quick. But i'm thinking what if the Urogyn doesn't help me and that im out of options. I know your thinking, your not out of options because you have only tied two things, Elmiron & a hydro, but I dont have insurance. So at this point, i'm ready to take what I can get. Well not everything...but most. I'm just afraid if I consent to another hydro somewhere down the road it could like rupture my bladder and i'd have to wear depends for the rest of my life or something...eekk. No offense to anyone who has to do so, but that just is like scary to me. I'm only 23 and I have alotta of living to do without depends or without a bladder...So what are your opinions about this? And who here has been told that they have a large bladder? Should I be worrying about my bladder rupturing or am i being completely dramatic? I wonder if rupturing can occur no matter what size your bladder is...it just seems to me that having a larger bladder would make you more at risk for it because its already so big...I think im rambling. Help Pllllease.:smile tee

I do not know about the effect a hydro/cysto has on a large bladder but I would really look at Elavil. You should talk to your doctor and ask specifically what would be the effect on you bladder.

Rhonda(LeeLee88) went through a bladder rupture during a hydro. The chance of rupture is always there but very a small possibility. Do a google search for bladder rupture hydrodistension and yu should find some reports and if there is an underlying reason like small bladder large bladder they will disclose that info. I havent googled it but I am sure you could find some useful info googling, I always do.

Hi Jamie
I am not sure about the large bladder question but I do know your bladder can rupture from the hydrodistention.
Now as you know some people benefit from the hydro, some get much worse and some stay the same.
My personal opinion after having issues with the hydro is I won't do one again unless a doctor absolutely positively tells me I have to and for a darn good reason.
It is your body and you know it best. You can decide if you want to or not
I hope you find what you need!

Bladder rupture is extremely rare, but I have always been told it's a possibility. I have had 41 hydros and mine has never ruptured.

I know that bladder rupture is possible but as Donna said from what I understand it is pretty rate.

As for bladder size, I wanted to comment on that because when I had a bladder surgery to remove a mass from my bladder prior to being diagnoised with IC the uro told me that I had a normal size bladder. He didn't say large or small but normal and even back then I knew that I peed more than normal people so I asked about this.

The uro who did my hydro didn't comment on the size of my bladder but from what I understand just because you have IC you don't have to have a small bladder. Some people with severe IC have had such scaring that it has made their bladder smaller but for alot of us we have a normal size bladder but it's just that due to the problem with the bladder lining can not hold as much urine without discomfort as people without IC.

While yes my bladder did rupture, it is VERY rare. My bladder was considered small but it did not rupture because it was small it ruptured because of the istrument that was used and my bladder was nicked. I think when we here "rupture" we think a big tear. But actually it was about the size of a beebee.. But I will say still the most painful thing I have ever been through. But I did not need surgery to repair it. I had to wear a catherter for 14 days to keep my bladder deflated so it could heal on it's own. If it did not then they would have had to go in and repair it. But I was fortunate and it did repair itself. I had to go back in and have my bladder filled again to make sure it was not leaking. And after 14 days it healed.

So, No I did not have to wear depends for th rest of my life..lol
I do not talk about this much because I do not want to scare anyone from this proceedure. I know it has helped so many! And it is a for sure way to get a true Dx for IC. So my experience was rare. But like I said it could happen.

I think this is just a chance we all take. There can be complications with any surgery we have. So it is all just a choice and up to the individual.

My bladder sprung a leak on my 1st C&H and not to worry....as its not the most pleasant situation (I'll be truthful: it sucked).... but it won't *break* your bladder. The tissue actually heals up pretty quickly (within a week). Don't worry you won't have to wear depends or anything like that...its just a muscle tear and it will heal up just like any other torn muscle. But I totally understand your concerns...I thought the same thing when this happened and I was 22 at the time.

The other gals are right: Its pretty rare that this type of tear will happen. Mine, more than likely, happened because they filled it beyond capacity and it tore. This practice isn't really standard any more, and its done by filling it via a different method where it only fills what it can truly hold and not more.

Now you'd think I'd be scared off from this whole C&H thing...but I ended having 2 or 3 more done since and they all went beautifully! They didn't really help me with capacity or releif of symptoms....so I don't get them done anymore.

Hope that helps some :)

you know its so funny you said this because ive been wondering about it. I had my hydro about 6 weeks ago and I think my bladder is still enlarged. I use the nuvaring for my birth control and I cant get it to go in to sit on my cervix because something is poking in the wall of my vagina right where my bladder is. It happened right after hydro so im assuming thats really the only thing it could be. How weird is that? Its getting quite annoying but i cant switch birth control becuase of the nausea, not that i can even have sex because of the pain with my IC (ive only been on elmiron for 4 weeks). Just wondering if anyone else has ever noticed it poking, or if im the only one. Wouldnt be surprised im a teeny tiny person.

AttackKitty: I think it would be a good idea to see your doctor.
