My husband and I are thinking about starting a family later on this year. So i have a couple of questions:
1) As a nurse I now that is it especially important to take folic acid to prevent birth defects but does it cause flares? If so are there any brands that are better than others in no causing flares?
2) My new urologist told me that symptoms of IC usually improve after pregnancy? Any thoughts?
Thanks!

I can't answer the folic acid question, but we have had at least several of our members who have gone through pregnancy with IC. Some have experienced remissions throughout; others have continued to have problems, and some have had difficult pregnancies --- my children were born before I developed IC --- I had two easy pregnancies and one difficult one.
The one thing all have in common is that nobody with new babies has said they regretted it.
Warm hugs,
Donna

I take one 800mcg folic acid supplement every day without problems. I get this at Wal Mart.

I would like to try and have another baby this year too but I was just diagnosed and I want some time to try to get it under control. I think my symptoms were actually caused by my pregnancy or at least it brought out the condition.
My biggest concern would be that having another baby would make the IC worse or progress. My doctor told me that most women report that their symptoms subside during pregnacy while others remain unchanged.
Good luck to you. I have an 18 month old son and he is just wonderful.
