The only pre-op I have had for all of mine was nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before.
Best of luck to you!

Sorry, I didn't have a hydro so I can't give you any advice but wanted to wish you luck!! I am sure everything will be fine. Please get on and let us know how it goes once you feel up to it!!! If you have any ?'s you want to ask after the procedure you may want to give a list to whom ever is taking you in/will be there to talk to the dr. You may be really groggy and if you don't ask before or after you may have to wait for your post op appointment. As I am sure you have learned through this ordeal, waiting is the worst. Best of luck, I am sure you will be fine{{{{HUGS******

You don't need labs or ekg etc for a hydro. What they will do your uro or a urology resident MD( if you are at a big hospital) will ask you what meds you are on , allergies, listen to your heart and lungs. They do the pre-op real quick and brief in the pre-op area before surgery. You will also meet at this time the anesthesiologist who will talk with you about what type of anethesia or medications they will give you. The other thing is they will have you sign a permit to do the cystoscopy- usually the MD gets this or an RN. That's it. They won't give you anything in your IV to relax until pre-op history and that permit is signed................ then you can have something in your IV to relax.
No need for you to go to md or hosptial for pre-op for cysto when they can do it real quick just before your procedure. Hope this helps. Vicky

I always have an EKG and blood test before a hydro and have to be without food or drink for several hours before, but that's it. There isn't any shave prep if that's what you mean.
Be sure to let us know how you do.

Every hospital has their own protocol and policy for pre-op like EKG and Labs.
Where I worked you only got an EKG if you had a history of High blood pressure, all men 45 and over, women 50 and over. Of course those with any cardiac history. I go to the University of Michigan and they have never done an ekg or labs in 22 years of hydros every 6 months.
This time I am having a laparoscopy added with the hydro so I have to get lab work but no EKG. I do my pre-op and sign all permits with the uro resident in the holding room.
Every hospital is different. It depends on your age and health history as well.
Good Luck. you will do fine.

hi, well im 25 and just had a hydro/cysto done on the 10th, i went in and they did a preg test, then they took me back to the pre op room then the nurse came in and did my history and asked how much pain i was in they gave me 2 antibiotic pills to take and a percocet, then the anethesiologist came and talked to me about meds they were going to give me they didnt do the norm for me because of acid reflux they gave me the twilight drug as they called it before i was even taken anywhere I was out within 2 minutes and he said more twilight while i was in there with some other pain meds in my IV during the procedure, I was awake before i knew anything happened got meds and went home. I was very scared also but it wasnt half as bad as i thought worst part is waiting for it. Im sure everything will go well please let us know how it goes. :)

Hi, I had my pre op the day of mine also, I did not have to go before for anything, I assume all doctors have there own protocol. I was awake before I knew it and going home. I just had to urinate before I could go home and once they knew I could urinate, they sent me home. Good luck to you and let us know how it goes. :)

They alway give me something to relax in my IV in the pre-op or as we are going down the hall to the OR room. I am awake pretty quick. Then you have to drink a little something and urinate before you go home. If you need pain medicine they give it to you as needed. The recovery room nurses always give me two vicodin before I am discharged. I get excellent care by all of the nursing and anesthesia team. I can't say enough about them . They are great.

I am scheduled for one on April 4th, I have to have a EKG due to heart problems, and lab work (mainly due to being on coumadin which is a bloodthinner- so I have to make sure my levels are thick enough) the day before; and since I am having it in the late afternoon, I can't have anything to eat or drink after 6a.m.

I had a pre-op before both of my hydros. They almost didn't do my surgery the first time since my iron level was at almost "transfusion" stage. I had the EKG too. It has been a long time ago, so I don't remember all the stuff they did.
My best advice is to have questions to ask after your surgery, like the amount of urine your bladder could hold during the procedure. Also make sure you have pain meds and anti-nausea meds. To this day, I still don't know how much my bladder held under anesthesia. The only thing my doctor said was that my bladder was so scarred and looked like a bladder of someone in their 80s.
I haven't had surgery in years now (since my interstim), but I make it very clear to have my cath out before they wake me up. The nurses also gave me a good dose of pain meds in my IV as well as anti-nausea meds. It all seemed to go pretty quickly after I got back to my room. I had to pee before I left and after that I was discharged.
Tracey
I've had 11 hydros in the past 16 years and I always have an EKG and blood work prior.

Standard for ekg with heart problems you would want that. Definately routine for coumadin lab work- I am sure you are used to that lab work for coumadin levels frequently

Like I said anethesia has different protocol and policies for preop workup , depending on your surgery case, your history and physical your age. etc.
I have had over 40 hydros no lab work or EKG.
I am howver having a laparoscopy added to this surgery. More potential there so I am having lab work. I also have to do a bowel prep which is the same bowel prep for colonoscopy. I did not do a bowel prep 16 years times have changed. I picked up my bowel prep pills today 32 pills and then 4 pills of ducolax.
Has anyone ever done a bowel prep for laparoscopy? Vicky
