Hi- I am having my first hydro on April 9th and I am scared to death. I have tried all other options with no success- meds (elmiron, atarax, elavil, gabapentin, singulair, etc.), instillations- DMSO and the other ones, diet- nothing works. So I have decided to try going off the meds to try and have a baby next year (I just got married in Dec 2007) and my new doc suggested I try a hydro. I am willing to give it a shot but I am worried about what to expect. How long does the pain last? What is the pain like? Is it the same as a flare? I would appreciate any info you guys might have- and what your own experience was with the hydro. Thanks so much.-Melissa

I'm sorry I don't have a real answer for you. I am one who benefits substantially from hydrodistention and it takes me only a few days to improve. However, some others take anywhere from one day to two months to recover.
I just hope the procedure helps you as much as it does me.
Sending welcoming hugs,
Donna

I had my hydro about the same time last year that you are having yours. I would say that the pain is like a bad flare. My dr sent me home with a script for vicoden and if you don't already have pain meds I would make sure your dr is going to give you some for afterwards to help with the pain.
I took a week off of work because I had no idea how long it was going to take me to feel better. I had my surgery on a Wednesday and ended up coming back the following Tuesday. It took some time to get back to my pre-hydro symptoms because it did not help me any but I felt really tired for that first week afterwards. I guess that was my body healing after going through having my bladder stretched and having biopsies done.
For me it really wasn't that bad though, I had to wait longer to go to the OR than the actual hydro itself took and then I was there maybe a half an hour afterwards and then I was sent home. It did really burn the first few times I peed but that went away more and more the more I drank water and the more I went.
Good luck. I hope it gives you some relief.

I am one that did not beneifit from the Hydro, But at least I did get a confirmed Dxs of IC and it ruled out other things and that was good. Because now I know where all the pain is coming from..

When I had mine done I had almost immediate relief. Since then I have been in remission for 5 years. It gave me back my life. sue

I wish you the best with your hydro. Each person you talk to will have a different response to whether it helps, hurts them or no change.
For me this is how they diagnosed mine so it was great to know after many years of struggling that there really was something terribly wrong with my bladder. The hydro did cause me many issues but most people do just fine.
I hope all goes well.

thanks so much for all of the info and advice.... It helps so much to hear from people that have been through the same thing. Sometimes I feel like nobody understands...... this really helps.:)
