View Full Version : How long should recovery be??

Sorry this is going to be long.

I had a cysto done about 10 days ago that did the hydro to stretch everything out. On his way in the uro found a bunch of scar tissue and infection in my urethra and did a dialation and "cleaning" of that area. We suspect that infection has been what's been causing most of my pain for the past 5 months and has just gone undetected or unbelieved when I went to numerous appts with OB's and normal doc to get help. The only clue I had was that my UA's kept coming back with traces of blood that were blown off.

I've known about my IC for about 14 years but have not had support or help from docs as it was done when I was young and I've moved a lot so I didn't have "proper documentation" to prove my case with every new doctor.

Most of the time I get by with minor irritations, peeing a lot, and maybe a couple major flares a year but....

Since having this cysto/dialation/urethral dialation done I have been in an increasing amount of pain. The uro's office keeps telling me it's going to take time, I just had it done, take a warm bath etc, I think something bigger is wrong like a new infection as I have not been in this much pain in YEARS. I can't even handle sitting for more than a few minutes and the car is unbearable.

I know it was brutal, but should the pain be getting worse? I'm not even what I'd call functioning right now.

My other concern is that they did a u/a while I was still knocked out from the catheter.. it came back that I had no infection. If my infection was in the urethra wouldn't the catheter by-pass that?

I went back thurs and they did another u/a from a catheter (they thought I wasn't passing urine well) and I am waiting to hear from them about that, but I'm wondering if they did it from the cath and my pain is in the urethra if it's going to miss it.

I guess I'm just terrified that this level of pain has been stirred up and completely aggrivated and this is what life is going to be. The uro is so proud of himself for saying my IC diagnsis is real because he thinks a lot of people get bogus diagnoses without testing etc but is not really willing to talk about the "what now??" part.

I'm in a small town and he's just about the only choice there is other than a guy with a well known reputation for being a jerk.

I'm really regretting all of this....

While there are Many on the boards that has been helped by the Hydro/Cysto unfortunately I was one that was not. I have experienced more pain after that I had never had before. But I also had complications.. I would suggest getting a hold of your Dr and explaining to him the pain you are feeling..

Thanks for your reply. The many calls since the procedue that I've made all pretty much end up with "take a warm bath and pyridium" (which makes me vomit).

I just keep feeling like if anyone should understand it's them, they just keep saying "but your still recovering" I just don't feel like I should be continually getting worse 10 days out.

I guess I'm just struggling to find, someone, ANYONE who doesn't look at me like I SHOULD'T be feeling anything because they can't figure any justifiable (by their standards) reason for me to be in pain. I thought this guy was it, but so far his remedy for everything is a "warm bath".

If you're still in pain, I honestly think you need to be checked to be sure you don't have an infection working. Some do take longer than others to recover, but if you're worse, it could easily be infection.

Sorry you are still having pain. I cannot really say much about the hydro as I have never had one done. I do know some people who say they have gotten worse or had more pain due to the hydro. Maybe it is just going to take some time for things to calm down. I mean think about it, they stretched your bladder beyond it's normal point. This would hurt a person who does not even have IC I would think. Maybe give it a little time. If you dont get better in another week or so, I would call the doctor back. Hope you feel better soon.

thanks all.

Here is my update:

I called the doc Monday am and told them I had a terrible weekend and had to spend most of it laying down because it hurt too much to sit. Since I had been on antibiotics when the cysto showed the urethral infection they decided to switch antibiotics for me since that was my biggest area of pain. They also gave me urised (sp?) as an anti-spasmodic/analgesic and painkillers to help me get through the night. I am doing much better!! I still feel a bit bruised and beat up but the screaming irritated pain has subsided significantly. So hopefully things are on the upswing.

My pain before my cysto was pretty bad, but I never had frequency, just a lot of pain right after I went to the bathroom. Since my cysto and hydrodistension a few weeks ago I have been peeing like 50 times a day and having so much pain even 2 vicodiny ever 6 hours wasnt helping me so I had to go up to percocet. I wish I would have never done it but theres no other way to diagnose it i guess.
