Thanks to the posts here, I read about lots of side-effects from taking Amitriptyline. I even knew to take the build-up of the dosage slowly.

I started by taking 10mg on a Friday and by Saturday I had vaginal spotting. Each day I took the med, the bleeding got worse. No, I am not even close to starting my period and my periods are regular. When the cramping started and the bleeding got worse, I stopped the med. Today no cramping, no fresh bleeding, and it is getting less and less.

Called the doctor and the nurse indicated that she has never heard of this before. She is not certain that this is the cause of the bleeding.

Yeah, I had the other usual side-effects, immediately the next day after starting the med, but I was trying to ride them out.

Anyone else have this? Does it go away?

I have never had this side effect. Are you on any other meds? I am glad you contacted your Dr. Did they say to stop it?

I have been off and on that med for 20 years and I have never had that happen. I am glad you called your doctor.

yeah i don't think amitriptyline is an anticoagulant....elmiron is so if your on that that might be it....
it might be something else your taking or even eating...
i would check with the doc anyway....
but i don't think any of the antidepressants are anticoagulants....
they can make you photosensitive though....
so watch out for sunburns and such....make sure you wear sun lotion....whenever the sun actually comes out that is...
take great care
hugs n better body days

I am not on any other meds except for singulair. I stopped the med and there has been no additional bleeding.

I did find an article from Forbes magazine (November 22, 2007 but originally printed in Archives of Internal Medicine) which is titled "Antidepressants Tied to Abnormal Bleeding." Article states that while the risk is small, bleeding is a serious side effect of some antidepressants. This is based on a small study in which patients reported bleeding in the uterus, upper gastrointestinal tact, brain, and other sites. They say this side effect will affect patients already at a higher risk for bleeding. More study will be needed.

Wow, I wish I had seen this post earlier, as it might have made more sense in my personal situation. I started taking amitriptyline 5mg and upped it to 25mg and it was originally prescribed for migraine like headaches but I did find it was also helping my IC. I took it until December 2007 which was a total of 9 months of taking it, not very long, but the bleeding started for me every single day in July when I had started taking it in the March and July is about the time I went up to 25mg, which I know is not much, but I had bleeding ranging from spotting to heavy period like for pretty much 8 months everyday, and it did not stop until about January which is shortly after I stopped taking it.
I went to my GP about it, and they tried me on hormone drugs which did nothing, then they send me for a ultrasound to check ovaries and this came back clear and I am still on the wait for a gyne appt (I live in London England, things take a LONG time here!), but maybe this is what it was all about the whole time....
