Do they relieve the actual pain/achy feeling of the bladder, or just the freq/urge feeling?

I was just diagnosed a month ago with mild IC (my main symptom is just that pelvic/bladder ache and a little irritation) and I am going to my uro on tuesday to talk about a treatment plan. My main concern is pain management. I have started the diet, gonna start taking Cystoprotek, and I already know after research and advice from the forum I do not want to do the DMSO instills. These rescue instills sound like they have been helpful to most of you and I just wonder if they might help me?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! :)

Thanks,

Erin

Hi Erin!

I have been doing the rescue instillations with Heparin, Sodium Bicarbonate & Lidocaine for 2 years. The rescue instills have really helped me with pain, uregency/frequency and the achey/crampy bladder feeling. I started getting the instills at my Uro's office & did them once a week for a year. After that year I decided I wanted to do them at home that way I could do them when I wanted and as often as needed.

Each person is different on how they react to the instills. I haft to say the first few months of the instills I was not sure if they were helping. I would get a crampy feeling after I let the medicine out of my bladder and this would last for a day after but after that day I would feel better. I now do them once a day at home and this seems to work well for me. When I do them everyday without skipping any days I feel great and hardly notice my bladder. The treatments are now soothing to me immediately when I do them.
I do them first thing in the morning before I go to work. This helps me get through the work day and reduces my trips to the bathroom.

I would try them it's worth giving them a shot. Keep in mind it make take a few weeks of doing them before you see any benefits.

The instillations (I use marcaine, heparin, sodium bicarbonate) have helped with pain, frequency, and that generally "irritated" sensation. I usually do them at night, but also do them in the morning if I wake up uncomfortable & they've saved many many work days!!

These, plus Elavil, are the most helpful of my IC treatments, though I do follow the diet & take the other meds listed below.

Hope you get equally good results:)

What is your amount of each item for your mix? The urologist is currently doing 40,000 ml of heparin every 2 weeks. I think it should be less heparin and more frequently.

I have been doing home instills since 2004. They take care of all of my symptoms. My cocktail is:

8cc lidocaine
2cc soduim bicarbonate
10,000 units heparin

No matter what the amount of heparin, does the lidocaine and sodium bicarb generally stay the same?

I have seen recipes that have different values of every ingredient. Some have to total volume of more that 30cc and some are like mine 11cc. Some use 40,000 units of heparin. It just depends on what cocktail you MD starts you with.

I have 40,000 cc of heparin and either 2% or 8% of lidocaine and sodium bicarb.
