I am trying to schedule my first hydro. Was wondering what to expect as far as recovery? Obviously I need to take day of procedure off, but what about after? WHat pain meds seem to work best for everybody? Appreciate all the help

I had my first Cysto/hydro last June, when I was diagnosed.
Expect to be pretty sore when you wake up (I assume they're putting you under). Your urgency and frequency will be pretty high, so make sure you take any pain meds they give you. They work wonders :)
I ended up taking three days to recover before I could return to school. The last day I was able to stop taking the pain meds they gave me with little issue, but I was still pretty sore. Keep a heating pad with you, and that'll help.
After those three days, I felt great. In fact, I saw an improvement in my symptoms for about three months, till I got a UTI. Plus then I had a diagnosis, and they started me on all the necessary drugs.

The last one I had, it took a good 2 to 3 weeks for me to recover and atleast a month until I felt good, I had alot of frequency and urgency and pain. I didn't have any pain meds so maybe if you have pain meds you will do better. :)

THanks - I am wishing good things for you and will be thinking about you monday, sending positive thoughts! Might not help, but certainly can't hurt. Please let me know how it went. Would love to hear your perspective.

After my last hydro my frequency, urgency, pain and spasms all increased 100%. It lasted well over a month and I had to be put in the hospital for a week on a PCA. I really never recovered back to the way I was before the procedure. My uro said well I guess we won't do that again.
A new uro I had seen wanted to do another one...guess what I said!

I probably should know this, but what is a PCA?

I had my 1st and only hydro in Dec of 2006. It did not go well at all.
I could not urinate on my own at all, bled quite a bit for a few days and could not have a bowel movement for several days. I was told that it was because my pelvic floor muscles were in shock and would not work. I had to be cathiterized at home for a week, put on muscle relaxers, pain meds, antihistamines and Flomax for well over a week. The really sad thing is my IC symptoms are about 90% worse now. I used to get a flare up for about a month once or twice a year and outside of that was just fine and could eat and drink anything I wanted to, now I have pain and frequency almost every day and have had to go on the IC diet as well as have had to start Meds.
I was told that it would be pretty much a cake walk and that I'd be back to work in a few days.... It took me 1 1/2 weeks before I could go back to work and several before I felt resonabley ok. It really tramatized me, as this is not what I had expected and not what I was told would be even likely. It really freaked me out, had no idea if it would fix itself and surely wasn't going to trust what they had to say after that. It's been two years since I've been back to see this Uro or any Uro until today, and I went out of despiration......
Needless to say I won't be doing that again!

Judy, I had my first hydro done yesterday.
It went pretty well. It was done and over with before I knew it. I went in at 10am and was able to go home by 1:30.
I'm feeling pretty good today, though there is pressure in my bladder/uretha, like I need to urinate, whether I have to or not. It hurts some to urinate, but not unbearable.
I'm taking Vicodin, and also some OTC AZO (Ok'd by the dr). I havent had any bleeding. They did a biopsy to.
I'm very glad to have had it done. I'll go back for an appt and they'll be able to tell me more then, but I'm glad to have this information from it now.
I have to get my son up and off to school tomorrow and friday at 7am, but I plan to take it easy the rest of the day those days.
