Anyone have this problem? Last two days I have had really bad bad bad stomach/belly/back pain. Thought maybe it was just the bladder having two extra bad days but didn't take cymbalta this morning. Had to drive so took it this afternoon. The extra pain was gone by mid morning but started up big time 1 hour after taking the cymbalta. Even the vicoden doesn't touch the pain. Can't stand up and sitting is hard too. :help:

I thought maybe a flare too but it has happened for 3 days in a row. Pain is now over 10. Even the down below pain is worse.

For me, all of the anti-depressants cause retention and as we all know, that can cause significant pain. Last time I tried prozac, just 5 mg, I retained over 350 mls. Could that be causing the pain? I find that they increase the pain in my bladder AND in my pf muscles 'down south' because they go into spasm.
Trust me, I look at those who can take anti-depressants with great envy. It's not only not fair having painful bladder syndrome, it's doubly unfair to not be able to take antidepressants.

I am in the same rowboat you are in . I can't take anti- depressants because I can't pee most of them or my anxiety off the charts. For me effexor was the worst for urinary retention......... Vicky

Then it isn't all in my head? I was starting to think I was making it all up. Have no clue why but most of the time when I try something new it all goes well for a little while and then boom. I get hit with some side effect. The only thing that has not given me any trouble has been the heparin/lildocaine instill and hydroxyzine. Not good really with all that has been tried I think. Will not take it today and see what happens. Thanks for the replies. :)

I am on day 11 and I have no retention at all from it. I actually pee even better for some strange reason. I don't have any pain from it either. Are you still on it?

I hope things get better for you  Have you made sure that you don't have a bladder infection or something like that??

I also had retention on cymbalta. It was great for my fibro, but made my bladder hurt because of the retention. I was on it over six months and finally I had enough.

I have tried Cymbalta and Lexapro and am now having to stop Wellbutrin. If anyone knows of an antidepressant ICers can take, I love to know about it!
According to my uro, there are serotonin receptors in the bladder, and that's what antidepressants do - serotonin reuptake inhibitors. So it's probably the additional serotonin in our bodies causing the flares, not necessarily retention. Nothing seems to touch that pain when I'm on antidepressants. It just wrings me out and I spend all my time on the sofa. I'd rather participate in my life.

I have tried every ssri antidepressant invenvted . I can't take them. I have been depressed for over a year ago when I had to give up my nursing career of 24 years because of IC. Main side effect is they give me retention I can't pee at all they shut me right down. Or they increase my anxiety level worse like lexapro and celexa. Cymbalta some can take I could not it caused me serious retention as it constricts the bladder neck muscle that and it it ssni norepinephrine would constrict or make you retention urine. SOme people do alright with it. I attriubut mine to my 22 years of my IC my bladder is very little and fibrosed so why would it want to contract.
Trycyclics too much weight gain.
My NP friend went to a lecture on pain md specialist they are using like lycric, neurontin, topamax , lamictal for pain control now for IC. VIcky

I am on my 3rd week of Cymbalta and I have no retention at all. It is so funny how all of our bodies are different. When I increased my paxil cr I had major retention.
