Well My 8yr old son fell off his bike on tuesday and broke his wrist!! I was worried but of course my husband said he was fine!! I picked him up from school weds and let them relax before starting their homework. I looked at his wrist! it looked bad! it was really swollen and he was favoring it. so we went to the pediatrician who then said to go to ER. Shayn was hoping for a broken bone! Dad feels so bad! We go in to see about a cast on friday. baseball just started so the season ends for him early!! it will be a long 6 weeks!

I hope he will heal quickly! It never seems to be at convenient time!
My older son broke 2 bones in his left hand when he fell during a basketball game in the middle of his basketball season. He was told he would be in a cast for at least 6 weeks which would be smack in the middle of tournament time. The first game was on a Monday night. I called his doctor to see if we could get the cast off a little early so he could play, but he wasn't able to take it off until the next day since he was at another location. I could have gone to another doctor in the group, but I decided it would be fun to let the kids "talk" me into taking off the cast myself. Justin to this day thinks it was the neatest thing by taking off the cast myself. He was the point guard and the team needed him desperately. He made 21 points that night. When I got home I did have to "face the music" with my hubby. First of all he went to a class since he thought Justin wouldn't be playing and he wasn't happy that I played doctor. I did videotape the game so that my hubby would see the highlights.
My younger son had a "boxer" fracture 3 weeks before he graduated high school. He and his friends were fighting with swords which I am amazed that was the only broken bone they way they fought. Of course it was his right hand. Luckily he only had to take one exam since he didn't have a B average for the semester in a class. I told him to pick the smartest girl in class to "write" for him. He had a huge cast on for almost 2 months. He had his senior trip and our church youth group trip right after graduation. He went, but he didn't get to have much fun. Of course the first thing he did when the cast came off was sword fight.
The doctors told me it was a rite of passage.

well he made it thru a half a day at school. he is uncomfortable but hates taking anything- either it tastes bad or he just can't swallow the pill. Although we have gotten some advil in him. We see the ortho at 10 hopefully the cast will go on. I will let you know what happens!

I'm so sorry about your son. I hope it heals quickly for him. I have never broken a bone (knock on some wood as I am such a klutz on the neurontin) but I thought they would put the cast on him in the ER. They didn't do it and made him go to an ortho appointment? Don't they know how to set bones and put on casts in the ER? Strange to me but I don't have anything to base it on since it's never happened to anyone in my family.

I hope the swelling is down enough to cast it now. When my youngest broke his, they put him in a brace with an elastic bandage, which was supposed to be just until the swelling went down, but he did so well with it, that they left him with the brace for the full six weeks.

Poor guy! Hope he heals quickly. As far as pills go, have you tried crushing them in a little apple sauce or jelly? Honey works well too... my oldest son couldn't swallow pills until he was almost 13- he looked cute crushing them at that age, but you do what ya' gotta do!
My youngest fell out of the lemon tree when he was 7 and broke his arm in two places, gotta hand it to him, when he does something, he does it big. LOL! They only put a plaster splint and an ace bandage on at the E.R., and waited for the swelling to go down before they did the actual plaster cast at the ortho's office three days later. They said that had they casted it at the E.R., they would have had to replace it when the swelling went down, as it would have been to big and floppy. Made sense to me! They actually built a full cast out of the plaster splint material, and then cut 1/2 of it away, leaving the left side of his arm casted, and the right side free to swell. They wrapped the whole thing in a big ace bandage and he was good to go.
The ortho's office also gave us a "blow up cast bag" that he could put on to shower and swim in. I've never seen one before nor since, but it was literally a plastic bag with elastic at one end. We slid his casted arm in the bag and blew up the end, and somehow it formed a water tight seal so he could shower and swim. My current doc says she's used them too, but hasn't seen them in a while... Might want to ask your doc about it for showering at least.
Give him a hug for us!

Well Still no cast! He was so upset!! He wrist/arm is still swollen. They are considering keeping him in the splint w/ace bandage. He really wanted that cast!! so instead (for now) we are signing his ace bandage! some are signing across the bandage wraps and I told him it is a puzzle! He loved it! He was so proud that he is getting it to all line up!
So on tuesday we go back for another x-ray then on Wednesday we see if they will cast it.
today he has been pain free!
